Abstract

Gender inequality is formed through a process of social construction that develops within a patriarchal system and is manifested in various manifestations of unequal relations between men and women. The literary work Broken Strings illustrates this reality through the narratives of its female characters. This study aims to analyze the various manifestations of gender inequality experienced by the female characters in the novel, adopting the theoretical framework of feminism developed by Mansour Fakih. This study uses a descriptive, analytical, qualitative approach as its primary methodology. Primary data were obtained from the entire text of the novel Broken Strings, and data collection was conducted using library research methods. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of identification, categorization, and interpretation of quotations, indicating the presence of gender inequality, in line with Mansour Fakih's conceptual framework, which includes five aspects: marginalization, subordination, stereotypes, violence, and double workload. The research findings reveal that the female characters in the novel experience marginalization in access to social and economic resources, subordination in family decision-making, and stereotypes that hinder their freedom and identity formation. This study also identifies forms of symbolic and psychological violence that function as instruments of patriarchal control. The phenomenon of the double burden of work is clearly visible in the pressure of domestic responsibilities that remain attached to women, along with social obligations, without a fair and equal division of roles. The results of this study confirm that the novel Broken Strings presents a critique of patriarchal structures through depictions of unequal power relations and the transformation of consciousness and resistance the female characters undergo against the various forms of oppression they experience.

Abstract

Folktales function not only as entertainment but also as cultural mechanisms for transmitting values and legitimizing social norms. However, structural studies of Kalimantan folklore, particularly those applying Vladimir Propp’s morphological approach, remain limited. This gap indicates the need for systematic analysis to reveal the narrative patterns underlying local folktales. This study aims to analyze the narrative structure of the Dayak Benuaq folktale Pohon Berdaun Kain using Vladimir Propp’s morphology. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a textual analysis design. The data were obtained from the book Cerita Rakyat Kabupaten Kutai Barat, published by the East Kalimantan Language Center. The results show that only 9 out of Propp’s 31 narrative functions are realized, forming a double-move narrative pattern. The structure develops from the resolution of personal conflict to the establishment of collective moral legitimacy through the distribution of magical agents, transformation, and punishment. Several spheres of action experience reduction and shifts, including the absence of the false hero function and the symbolic transformation of the princess and father roles. These findings demonstrate that Propp’s morphology is adaptive and relevant for analyzing Indonesian folklore, particularly in revealing how narrative structures function as mechanisms for reproducing social values. This study contributes to the development of folklore studies and structuralism by providing empirical evidence from the Dayak Benuaq cultural context.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of adolescent social problems in the novel Areksa by Ita Kurniawati. The novel portrays various adolescent issues, including family conflict, interfaith romantic relationships, and the influence of peer group subculture in the process of identity formation. This study aims to describe the forms of adolescent social problems presented in the novel and to analyze their relationship with social realities through the perspective of the sociology of literature proposed by Ian Watt. This research employs a qualitative approach using content analysis. The data consist of quotations of dialogues and narrative passages in the novel that reflect adolescent social problems. Data were collected through a literature study using reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three major forms of adolescent social problems: family dysfunction that leads to communication breakdown within the domestic sphere, the dynamics of interfaith romantic relationships influenced by social and religious norms, and peer group subcultures that function as alternative spaces for adolescent identity formation. These findings indicate that Areksa functions not only as a work of entertainment but also as a reflection of the social realities experienced by contemporary adolescents shaped by family dynamics, social norms, and peer group subcultures.
