Abstract

The liquid extract of antihypertensive herbs could reduce blood pressure equivalent to Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg based on research conducted in “Hortus Medicus” clinic, Tawangmangu, Central Java, but parameters of herbal medicine taste, design, and packaging had the lowest scores. Transdermal patch was chosen as an alternative to resolve those problems. Polymers determined the effectiveness of the active substance release from the formula. Patch was formulated from combination of hydrophilic hydroxy methylcellulose (HPMC) and carboxymethylcellulose natrium (CMC-Na) polymer which would produce a fast release profile. The objective of this research was to study the kinetics models of total flavonoid release and to study the total number of flavonoids released from the antihypertensive herbs patch for 5 hours, as well as to determine the optimum formula for observing the weight, pH and loss on drying. Herbs were infused with distilled water at 90 ° C for 15 minutes, filtered then evaporated. Release kinetics model used a modified type-5 dissolution apparatus equipment with a cellophane membrane. The optimum proportion of HPMC and CMC-Na was 220:180 mg. Patch was dark brown, circle shaped, moist and flexible. It had pH value of 7.29 ± 0.09, folding endurance of 350, and thickness of 0.64 ± 0.05 mm. The average percentage of total flavonoids released from the matrix patch was 37.23% for 5 hours. The release kinetics followed the Higuchi kinetics model with a diffusion mechanism.

Abstract

Functional beverages from lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), white ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) and black tea (Camelia sinensis) were developed based on their α-glucosidase inhibitory (AGI) activities and sensory acceptance. The AGI was evaluated using in vitro enzymatic assay, while sensory acceptance was tested using affective sensory tests. The evaluation of their aqueous extracts showed that dried lemongrass and ginger possessed higher extraction yield (3.4 %, 2.7 %, respectively), though not necessarily accompanied with a better AGI activity (IC50 24.50 mg/mL, IC50 16.61 mg/mL) than the fresh lemongrass and ginger (2.1 %, 1.8 %, IC50 17.93 mg/ml, IC50 47.00 mg/mL, respectively). Meanwhile, the evaluation of the combined extract showed additive and synergistic effects. The extract combination formula was selected based on the sensory acceptance, resulting in the beverages containing 4.29 mg/mL of lemongrass, 0.71 mg/mL of ginger, and 1.05 mg/mL of black tea with a total phenolic content of 636.45 mg/L Gallic Acid Equivalent (GAE). The selected formula showed the stability of AGI activity andthe pH value at 4 °C were in accordance with the growth of microbial count that was lower than those stored at 25 °C in a 50-day period. Changes in color and oBrix value were not significantly observed in the samples stored at 25 °C and 4 °C. Lime juice was selected as the additional flavoring agent, which could increase both the palatability and AGI activity of the beverages.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has mandated using the Hospital Information System (HIS) since 2013. Until now, not all hospitals in Indonesia have implemented HIS, however. Some barriers have prevented them from applying HIS. This study explores the opportunities and barriers regarding implementing the Hospital Information System (HIS) in Indonesia through a public hospital case study. This study applied a qualitative approach. The approach used interviews to gather data using a pre-tested interview guideline. The guideline used several constructs to structure the questions, i.e., predisposing, enabling, reinforcing, barrier, and projected behavior. Participants were different types of HIS users in the studied hospital, i.e., physician, nurse, pharmacist, administrators, laboratory personnel, and Information Technology (IT) personnel. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically. The interviews involved twenty-one participants. Nine themes describe HIS implementation challenges in this case study, i.e., familiarity, flexibility, empowerment, discipline, facilities, data sharing, quality assurance, pragmatism, and capacity building. Pragmatism could be a barrier, while the other values would be opportunities. These challenges are promising in guiding HIS implementation success. The values found in this study convince that HIS implementation in Indonesia is promising. Those challenges are required to be taken into account to  implement  HIS successfully.

Abstract

Pediculosis capitis is an infection with a fairly high incidence in children. Plants that contain eugenol, as frangipani (Michelia champaca L.), ceylon ironwood (Mesua ferrea L.), cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii), and sugar apple (Annona squamosa L.) have potential as an alternative pediculicide. This study aimed to compare the effect of traditional formulation of each plant with in vitro assay. The effectiveness of in vitro pediculicide was assessed from the post- immersion mortality time of the traditional formulation, permethrin 1% as the positive control and coconut oil as the negative control. The mechanism was observed using histopathological observation. The percentage of mortality time of lice was analyzed using One-Way ANOVA of SPSS 16. Histopathological aspects and infestation decrease were presented descriptively. This study took place for about 3 months and was conducted in Mataram University, West Nusa Tenggara. The results showed that frangipani leaves had the optimum pediculicide effect because the highest efficacy demonstrated by frangipani leaves formulation revealed the effect lower than permethrin 1% (LT: 350 minutes). In observation of histopathology, frangipani leaves formulation indicated the presence of anoxia similar to permethrin 1%.

Abstract

The effectiveness of South Sumatra coffee extract cream in burn wound recovery of white male mice had been analyzed. This research aims to ensure which one between immature and mature coffee bean that was better to recover burn wounds of male white mice after 14-day testing. The prepared concentrations for both coffee beans were 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%. We then figured out that ethanol contained by young and old coffee beans had a recovery effect on burn wounds of male white mice (Mus musculus). Findings indicate that 0.3% of mature coffee beans were more effective in recovering burn wounds of male white mice (Mus musculus), in which the wound recovery percentage was close to that in the positive control (burnazin).

Abstract

This study follows the previous study entitle Problem-based Learning (PBL) in reflective pedagogy paradigm (RPP): Innovative learning in pharmaceutical care, which identified the learning material as complicated. This study aimed to provide an appropriate method for performing pharmacy management and pharmaceutical care in Community Pharmacy. Data collection was done using an assessment instrument to identify student’s achievement. The previous study encompasses preceptors and students in developing learning material, which cause it more valid and reliable to be implemented. The study was conducted in Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Semarang city. The effectiveness of the learning material was shown by the grade of student’s achievement in learning outcome and the clear state with confidence in the expression of reflection and action-plan. Most of the students in the 3 cities achieved an excellent grade both in the problem-solving field, and presentation of the assignment. The students reflected that the learning material is simple and suitable in practicing pharmaceutical care and pharmacy management, moreover, they can state their plan to work as a Community Pharmacist with confidence. Therefore, PBL in the RPP method is ready to be used in practicing pharmaceutical care in the Community Pharmacy.

Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) seeds contain alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds and saponins have been proven its synergistic effect in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. In this research, ethanol extract of papaya seeds was formulated in gel preparations. Optimization of the composition of the gelling agent and humectant was carried out to obtain the gel preparation of papaya seed ethanol extract with good physical properties and stability. The parameters used to determine the stability of the preparation are Physical properties which include viscosity, spreadability, and percentage of viscosity shift. Data analysis was performed using Design-Expert software version 12 and SPSS. The inhibitory activity test was carried out by the disk-diffusion agar method with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 as the test bacteria. The results of the inhibitory activity test of papaya seed ethanol extract at a concentration of 20% had moderate activity and at concentrations of 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% classified as strong against the Staphylococcus aureus. Carbopol 940 is dominant factor in influencing the response of viscosity (92.504%) and spreadability (59.539%). Preparations with good physical properties and stability were obtained on the use of carbopol 940 and propylene glycol as much as 1.06604 grams and 13.2146 grams respectively.
