Orientasi Baru adalah Jurnal ilmiah yang bertujuan menyampaikan pemikiran-pemikiran kritis yang dapat memberi inspirasi dan arah baru bagi kehidupan Gereja dan masyarakat Indonesia di tengah kemajemukan budaya dan agama dalam diskusi bidang filsafat, teologi ataupun ilmu-ilmu terkait dalam bentuk karya tulis, laporan penelitian dan resensi buku. Jurnal ini diterbitkan oleh Pusat Penelitian Teologi Kontekstual, Fakultas Teologi Universitas Sanata Dharma. Jurnal terbit 2 kali dalam setahun (April dan Oktober).

This writing intends to investigate the development of biblical wisdom tradition by comparing the Book of Qoheleth to the Book of Proverbs which was composed earlier. The comparison between those two textual traditions which is focused on two themes, namely, the reality and the human life, clearly indicates a significant development of ideas. Qoheleth argues that in real life, the Law of Retribution which is marshalled by traditional wisdom represented by Proverbs does not work. Nevertheless, Qoheleth has not arrived at a better solution yet. What it offers is just a “carpe diem†ideology as a preliminary solution to the problem.

Eric Weil (1904-1977) is a French Philosopher, emigrated from Germany. In the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in French army to fight the Nazi invasion. The experience of holocaust has urged him to offer a concrete contribution for the sake of humankind. He was deeply concerned with social problems, yet his main interest was philosophy. He understood philosophy as a virtue of rational dialogue to avoid violence and barbarism. Violence prevented human person to be wise. The task of philosopher is to support dialogue between the existing discourses, and to develop rational culture marked by freedom and responsibility in creating a more peaceful world. For Weil, a philosophical reflection is essentially related to politics as well as to the whole of human life. Philosophy is a moral movement or dynamic choices for transforming the world from the state of instinctive characters to the rational state of peaceful life.

Yohanes Calvin (1509-1564) adalah figur penting di balik perkembangan Gereja Protestan. Salah satu dari sejumlah sumbangannya yang penting ialah terkait dengan gagasan dan pendekatannya terhadap Kitab Suci. Menurutnya, Alkitab sebagai Kitab Suci adalah Sabda Allah sendiri. Alkitab memang berwujud sebuah buku dengan tulisan yang berciri manusiawi, namun keberadaannya tidak dapat dilepaskan dari inspirasi Roh Kudus. Penafsiran atas Alkitab yang memuat Perjanjian Lama dan Perjanjian Baru – dan keduanya ini memiliki kedudukan yang setara – boleh dilakukan oleh siapa saja; tak ada satu pihak pun yang berhak meng-klaim sebagai penafsir tunggal. Calvin menekankan perlunya pendalaman atas teks dan konteks, sebagaimana itu dulu juga dikembangkan oleh para penulis Injil dan penulis surat-surat Perjanjian Baru dalam berhadapan dengan teks-teks Perjanjian Lama. Dengan ini, menurutnya, penafsiran Alkitab akan selalau bersifat majemuk dan tidak mandeg dalam acuan masa lalu saja.

Asghar Ali Engineer (1940-…) is a distinguished scholar and activist of Islam in India. He believes in the importance of showing equal respect to all religions and he considers faith in religion as most vital for a meaningful and transformative life. A true religion should open the way to liberating movements to free people from ignorance, superstition, oppression, slavery and injustice. Faith gives dignity to freedom in thinking and acting. These are noble ideals that do not only provide inspiration to live, but also encouragement to foster creativity, purposeful and peaceful life. Somehow, Asghar Ali Engineer found that women have not been treated equally in some Muslim establishments. That is what he is struggling to change. Justice and equality is unseparable, and he believes that a true religion will not be against the struggle for justice and peace. For this reason, he develops a liberating and inter-religious theology.

Søren Kierkegaard triggered a movement of the existentialist philosophical schools. He brought back philosophy to the real meaning of human life. The true meaning does not depend on a speculative truth, but on the real life existence. Jean Paul Sartre put emphasis on the free choice to grasp a real meaning of life. One makes choice from some alternatives. Subsequently one has to be responsible of one’s choice. Sartre’s philosophical idea and statements became favorite of his time. Gabriel Marcel wrote his philosophical reflection with his high appreciation to the human being as mystery. The relation between “I and thouâ€, even “I and Thou†have given a different angle to Sartre’s. What are the significance of the existentialist schools for our contemporary society?

Younger generation holds a very important role in the development of science. Indeed, the fast-growing science has positive and negative effects on them. And, many young people lean on the mainstream view, embracing a hedonistic, pragmatic, and consumptive lifestyle. On the other hand, as a reaction, not few of them have involved in a new spiritual movement that tries to demonstrate that human existence is more than the fulfillment of physical needs, and that religion has important contribution in meeting “spiritual needsâ€. The question here is what are the roles of religion and science in transforming youth morality as integrated person, especially when some believe that religion is incompatible with science, and some other even blame the fast-growing science as the main cause of moral crisis among the youths.
