Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “The Traditional Symbols of Marriage in Scotland and Pamona Central Sulawesi: A Semiotic Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, describe, analyze, and contrast the kinds and meanings of the traditional symbols of marriage in Scotland and Pamona. In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The data of traditional symbols of marriage in Scotland were collected  from several sources in the internet, while the data of traditional symbols of marriage in Pamona were collected from wedding event and by interviewing the informants to get explanations about the symbols. The writer uses Peirce’s theory in anylizing the data and Lado’s theory in contrasting both symbols to find out their differences and similarities. The result of this research shows that traditional symbols of marriage in Skotland are founded ten kinds such as wedding ring, wedding dress, wedding cake, wedding kiss, luckenboot brooch, wedding bouquet, toss the bride’s bouquet, quaich Skotland, ceilidh dance and honeymoon while traditional symbols of marriage in Pamona are founded four kinds such as wedding dress, necklace, sampapitu and wata oli (dowry), and dero dance. The similarities of both cultures are symbols of engagement such as ring, necklace and traditional dance. The differences of both cultures are Scotland traditional marriage has wedding cake, wedding kiss, wedding dress, luckenbooth brooch, wedding bouquet, toss the bride’s bouquet, quaich Scotland, honeymoon, while in Pamona hasn’t. Pamona traditionl marriage uses the symbol of  sampapitu and wata oli (dowry, while Scotland hasn’t.  Keywords: Traditional Symbols, Marriage, Scotland and Pamona, Semiotic Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study is an attempt to analyze, describe and contrast English and Bangai language which focuses on the interrogative sentences in relation to their form and function in both languages. The data of the English language were collected from books by Aarts (2001) Aarts and Aarts (1957), whereas the data of Banggai language were collected by interviewing and recording using a mobile phone recording, resulting in the collected audio material as the primary data. The data were then analyzed and described. To find out the forms and functions of interrogative sentences, the writer used theory of interrogative sentences based on Aarts (2001). After that, the data were contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1957). The results of this study show that these two language have differences as well as similarities. There are eight similarities and eight differences between both languages.      Keywords : Interrogative Sentence, English  and Banggai Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT           The research is entitled “Kata Sifat Dalam Novella Animal Farm Oleh George Orwell ”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify types of adjectives in the novella Animal Farm by George Orwell (1945). It is also to analyze and describe the functions of adjective in the novella. This research uses a descriptive method and  the theory by Collins and  Hollo (2000). The results show there are 122 adjectives in which 76 of them are the gradable type of adjectives and 46 are non-gradable types of adjectives. The gradable types of adjectives are further devided into absolute adjectives (46 words), comparative adjectives (8 words) and superlative adjectives (2 words). There are two functions of adjectives in the novella. The first one is attributive function (114 words)  and the second one is predicative function (8 words).___________________________         Keywords: Adjectives, Types, Functions, Gradable, Non-Gradable

Abstract

ABSTRACT          This research entitled “Depresi dalam Novel The Lovely Bones arya Alice Sebold” is intended as a requirement to accomplish the bachelor’s degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. The purposes of this research are to identify and classify the depression symptoms of Salmon’s family. This research also analyzes how Salmon’s families overcome their depression. This study used descriptive method in analyzing the data from the novel. The collecting data used theory of depression by Bhowmik et.al. (2012).  There are 15 depression symptoms from the depression theory. The results show that the Salmon’s family experienced 12 depression symptoms. There are feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, insomnia, changes in appetite, agitation, irritability or angry outbursts, slowed response, decreased concentration, tiredness or loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, trouble in thinking, and unexplained physical problems. Jack Salmon experienced 9 symptoms, Abigail Salmon experienced 6 symptoms, and Lindsey Salmon experienced 3 symptoms. Among them experience some of the same symptoms of depression. Because the loss of Susie, they experienced depression. Abstract

ABSTRACTSymbol is a sign which refer to an object. The religious symbols are representation of something that transcendental or occult and beyond the human thought. In this research the writer focus to kind of religious Symbols that exist in the celebration of sacrament that divided into seven types which is Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Marriage, Ordination, Anointing of the sick. The objective of this research is to identify, classify and analyze the meaning of symbols that exist in sacrament celebration. In collecting data, the writer focuses on identifying kinds of religious symbols based on Riches theory in Dillstone (2002) and then analyzes the meaning of those symbols by using Brodbeck’s theory in Sobur (2013).The method used in this research is Descriptive method. The result of this research is there are 47 religious symbols that found in Catholic Sacraments and all of those symbols have relation with God, nature, human and life reality.Key words: Semiotic, Religious symbols,Catholic Sacraments

Abstract

ABSTRACT      This research, entitled  “Error Analysis of Simple Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense: A Case Study at Seminary of St. Francis Xavier Tomohon”.  This research is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the kind of errors made by the first year students of Seminary St. Francis Xavier Tomohon when using the simple present tense and present continuous tense in writing English. This research used a case study approach. The data were taken from the first year students in seminary by making a test about simple present tense and present continuous tense and giving a topic for the students to make an essay. The writer uses some techniques of analyzing the data, as follows: identification of error, classification, description, and correction. The result of this research shows that there are four types of errors made by the students.  Those errors are omission, misinformation, misordering, and addition. Based on this errors, the writer also finds some forms of errors. The writer finds the error of verb omission (-es, -s), auxiliary omission of the negative sentence, omission of to be, omission of –ing form, misinformation of simple present tense’s  verb, misinformation of to be, misinformation of present continuos tense’s verb, misordering of the subject, misordering of the object, misordering of adverb, misordering of conjunction, addition of simple present tense’s verb, addition of preposition, addition of –ing, addition of to be, and addition of verb’s base form.  Key words: Error Analysis, Simple Present Tense, Present Continuos Tense, Students’ Essays

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled is Analysis of Signs in The Crucifixion Film: A Semiotic Analysis. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze the kinds and meaning of signs in The Crucifixion Film. In this research, the writer uses Pierce’s theory in the process to identifying, classifying and analyzing each scenes and meaning of signs in The Crucifixion Film. The method of this research is descriptive. In doing this research, the writer read some books and journals about signs. The data of signs were collected from every scene which contain sign in the film and analyzed according to Pierce’s theory. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of signs in film, namely icons, index and symbols. Sign of icons found in 5 scenes namely man and woman, book, sister Adelina and Vaduva, book, and Agares. Sign of indexes found in 9 scenes namely cell iron, blood, costume black, light, insect, strangulation, blood, rain and blood. Sign of symbols are found in 5 scenes namely prayer candles, cross, prohibition, mask and cross. All of this signs contain different meanings. Icons of man and woman mean father Phil’s own, and woman: Nicole’s own. Icons of sister Adelina's and Vaduva’s means Sister Adelina and Vaduva itself. Icons of an exorcism book means a brown book and is a square shaped. Icons of Agares's demonic means a bald-headed demon, and a skull-like body. Icons of an exorcism book means a brown book, is square in shape. Index of the prisoner cell means confinement for the murder of Father Dimitru. Index of the blood means a reaction from within the body of Sister Adelina. Index of the black clothing means shows grief. Index of the flashlight means sing of darkness. Index of the insect means the existence of Agares' resentment towards Nicole. Index of the choking means the resentment of Satan Agares over Sister Vaduva's visit. Index of blood means the fall of Father Gabrielle from the roof of the Church. Index of the rain means mocking uses holy water. Index of blood means a violent impact experienced by Nicole and symbol of the prayer candle means light of Christ, symbol of the cross means life and evidence of strength, symbol of the prohibition means line cannot be passed and the entered, symbol of the mask means a costume for the celebration of the strigoi festival and symbol of the cross means life and evidence of strength. Keywords : Signs, The Crucifixion Film,  Semiotic Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled ?Kalimat Imperatif dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Ponosakan? and focuses on the types, functions, similarities, and differences of imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language. The writer arranged some questions for this research, that are: what are the types and functions, and the similarities and differences of imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language.The data in English were collected by reading and studying as many references as possible related to this research. The data in the Ponosakan language was taken from 3 informants who know well about the Ponosakan language and used it in their daily conversations. After collecting the data, the writer identified and classified the imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language. After that, the data were analyzed by using the contrastive analysis method. The writer contrasted the data between English and Ponosakan language to find the similarities and differences. Imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language are devided into types and functions. The types are imperative sentences with subject, imperative sentences without subject, imperative sentences with let us, negative imperative sentences, and imperative sentences with do. The functions of imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language are command, wish, invitation, and warning.Keywords: imperative sentences, English and Ponosakan Language, contrastive analysis.
