Abstract

ABSTRACT                 This study entitled “Conflictive Act in the Novel Murder in The Mews by Agatha Christie”. It is an analysis of Pragmatic investigation that focus on one aspect of speech acts called Illocutionary act. It is attempt to find the kinds and Function of Illocutionary act in the Novel. The data have been taken from characters utterances’ in the Novel. The writer analyzed the data descriptively by concentrating on utterances which contain Illocution. The theory use in this research is taken from Leech’s theory about illocutionarry acts’ classification. The finding of this research show that the kinds of function of the illocutionary act are found in the Novel “Murder in the Mews”.It is classified into four categories, those are threatening, reprimanding, accusing, and cursing. Theoretically the writer extends that this research can give any contribution for students or readers to understands kinds of illocutionary act and their functions are not only in this novel, but also in the literary works especially in daily conversation/communication.      Keywords: Illocutionary, Nove, Pragmatics Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study is an attempt to analyze, describe and contrast English and Bangai language which focuses on the interrogative sentences in relation to their form and function in both languages. The data of the English language were collected from books by Aarts (2001) Aarts and Aarts (1957), whereas the data of Banggai language were collected by interviewing and recording using a mobile phone recording, resulting in the collected audio material as the primary data. The data were then analyzed and described. To find out the forms and functions of interrogative sentences, the writer used theory of interrogative sentences based on Aarts (2001). After that, the data were contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1957). The results of this study show that these two language have differences as well as similarities. There are eight similarities and eight differences between both languages.      Keywords : Interrogative Sentence, English  and Banggai Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research entitled “Deiksis dalam film Beauty and The Beast by Jeanne-Marie Leprince De Beaumont”. Is written to identify, classify and analyze the types and how deixis used in the film Beauty and The Beast by Jeanne-Marie Leprince De Beaumont. The method that used in this research is the descriptive method, and the data taken from film Beauty and The Beast by identify and classifying deixis according to their types and usage . The data have been analyzed using the theory of Levinson. The types of deixis that found in the film Beauty and The Beast by Jeanne-Marie Leprince De Beaumont  are person deixis (first person,second person and third person), place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis and sosial deixis and the usage of deixis that is gestural and symbolic. Theoretically, this research is intended to add to the research of linguistic research, especially in the field of pragmatics about deixis. Practically, it is expected to be a comparative material for other researchers who will analyze the same thing in linguistic field, and can provide information to increase reader’s knowledge on linguistic especially deixis.__________________Keywords: Deixis, Pragmatics, Film:Beauty and The Beast.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study entitled Commissive in the Novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. In doing this research the writer used Austin’s theory (1962). Austin classifies the utterance according to the illocutionary meaning, those are verdictives, executives, commissives, behabitives, and expositives. Commissive act is a speech act that asks the speaker doing something in the future. This research is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. The method that used in this research is the descriptive method. The data of commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down were collected from novel. The data found in this research are identified and classified based on types of commissive, and analyzed the meaning of commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down based on Austin’s theory. The result shows that the types and meanings found in the novel are promise (completing the tower, giving the building, and meeting with Marthin), engage (focus on, looking for smart people, giving a name, listening, seeing his sick father, building a hotel location, and buying a ticket), offering (read messages, lend money, and give advice), agree (Lara as an iron butterfly, Lara is bigger than her competitors, and beautiful city in Venice), intend (say something), guarantee (guard his father, complete the building, and Lara will success), mean to (go to New York), and declaration (assign new workers, send bert to London, and cancel the meeting). It is expected that the study can help the readers especially the students in learning pragmatics especially commissive in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon.Keywords: Commissive Act, Novel The Stars Shine Down, Pragmatic Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT             The title of this research is “Salam dan Ungkapan perpisahan dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Pasan: Suatu Analisis Kontrastif“. The study is an attempt to analyze, and describe, the contrast English and Pasan Language which focuses on Greetings and leave taking in relation to theirs forms and pattern in both languages.    Greetings and leave takings are part of talk and action while  very important in conversation, greetings is used for opening a conversation and also for establishing social relationship with the other people,  whereas leave takings is used to closing a conversation.  This research uses descriptive method and contrastive analysis. The data were taken from Library research and field research, in this case choosing informants and giving the interview.  The data were collected, analyzed ,and described, to find out the forms and patterns of Greetings and leave taking the writer used theory of  Wardhaugh (1986), Tilit  and  Bruder  (1985) , Brown and Ford (1961). After that, the data were contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1971). The results of this study is Greetings and leave taking in English and Pasan language has two forms, they are formal ad informal. The result is there are three patterns in English and four patterns in Pasan language on Greetings. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Bentuk Permintaan Sopan dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Talaud: Suatu Analisis Kontrastif”. The problem in this research is what are the forms of polite request in English and Talaud Language and, what are the similarities and difference between the two languages. The research question to be answered are how are the forms of polite request in English and Talaud Language and are there any similarities and differences in both languages. In terms of methodology, the writer used descriptive method and contrastive analysis. The whole data were collected by doing library and field research. The data of both languages were analyzed based on Lado’s (1971) theory. The result of this research shows that polite request in English and Talaud Language have some similaraties and differences. Both languages have polite forms. Besides, the differences in both languages are found in terms of structure, forms of sentences, distribution of verbs and personal pronouns which were used to address the hearers. Key Words: Polite Request, English and Talaud language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT                        This research entitled Prinsip-prinsip Kesopanan dalam Film Dead Poets Society Karya Thom Schulman :  Suatu Analisis Pragmatik focuses on maxim related to the politeness principles. The aims of this research are to identify, classify and analyze the politeness principles and their functions in Dead Poets Society movie.  The method of this research is descriptive method. The descriptive method is a method that used to find the elements and characteristics of a phenomenon. This method starts from collecting data, analyzing data, interpreting data. The data are collected through conversation among characters, classify and analyze them according to the concept of Leech (1983). The result shows that there are six maxims of politeness and their function applied by the characters in their dialogues. Those are the tact maxim, the genorisity maxim, the approbation maxim, the modesty maxim, the agremeent maxim, and the sympathy maxim. It is expected that this research will help students and readers in learning pragmatic, especially on politeness principles.  Keywords : Politeness Principles, Pragmatic Analysis,  Dead Poets Society Movie

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Compliment Utterances in The Film Me Before You by Jojo Moyes : Pragmatic Analysis”. The aims of this research is to identify, classify and analyze the compliment utterances and their function in Me Before You film. This research used a descriptive method. The data were collected from conversation among characters, then they classified and analyzed they are according to the concept of Holmes (1986).The result shows five types of compliment utterances and their function applied by the characters in their dialogues. First, ability consists of 7 compliment utterances based on compliment abilities that function to express solidarity and admiration for abilities that are real. Second, possession consist of 10 compliment utterances based on compliments of possession that serves to express an admiration for human property that is real deserves compliment or appreciation. Third, physical appearance consist of 8 compliment utterances the function of expressing a sense of attraction will fascinate the physical appearance who intends to give real compliment without the desire to mock that can establish a smooth and positive communication relationship. Fourth, personality consist of 22 compliment utterances based on personality compliment that serves to express a sense of solidarity, admiration, appreciation of the behaviour, character, or nature of someone who can build one's self-confidence. Fifth, quality consist of 3 compliment utterances based serves to express a sense of appreciation for someone good and bad qualities. This compliment phrase also serves to appreciate the actions or qualities produced by someone who can build one's enthusiasm. Abstract

ABSTRACT            Language is one of the most important and characteristic forms of human behavior. In communication, people not only utter sentences but also transfer into behavior and this is called speech act. According to Searle, illocutionary act is divied into five categories, which are :assertives, directives, commisives, expressives, and declaratives.The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the function of illocutionary acts in the novel “The Guardian” by Nicholas Sparks. The collected data have been identified to the utterances hich contain illocutionary acts that are used by the characters in the novel and descriptively based on the theory of Searle.In this research finding, it shows that there are five kinds of illocutionary acts in the novel. Those are assertives, directives, commisives, expressives, and declaratives. The function of illocutionary act in the novel are reporting, asserting, complaining, requesting, advising, begging, offering, thanking, and praising.The outcome of this study is to give contribution of the language development in linguistic studies especially in analyzing illocutionary acts through pragmatic analysis and to be expected to help the students of English Departement in understanding the illocutionary act so that they can identify and analyze the illocutionary act in daily life.                                                                                                                          Keywords : Illocutionary Act, Novel The Guardian

Abstract

ABSTRACTSThis research entitled “ Illocutionary Act in the Film Divergent Series “Insurgent”  By  Robert Schwentke : A Pragmatic Analysis”, is an analysis of pragmatic investigation that focus on one aspect of speech acts called illocutionary act. This research  is an attempt to find out the kinds and funtions of illocutionary act in the  film. The data have been taken from the characters utterances in the film. The writer analyzed the data descriptively by concentrating on utterance which contain illocution. The theory used in this reseach is taken from Austin theory about  illocutionary acts. The findings of this research show that the kinds and functions of the illocutionary act found in the film Divergent series “Insurgent” is classified into five categories, those are Verdictives: (acquit), (convict), (find as a matter of fact), (hold as a matter of fact), (interpret as), (understand), (read it as), (rule), (calculate), (reckon), (estimate), (locate), (place), (date), (measure), (value), and (describe). Exercitives :  (appointing), (choose),  (ordering), (voting),  (urging),  (advising), (warning), (name), (proclaim), and (direct). Commistives : (promise), (undertake), (contract),  (swear),  (agree), (declare for),  (oppose), (to be on), and  (espouse). Behabitives: (congratulating), (challenging), (apologizing), (cursing), and (condoling). Expositive: giving a view, giving an explanation or opinion, giving an explanation of uses and references. Keywords: Illocutionary act, film Divergent Series Insurgent, pragmatics analysis.
