Abstract

ABSTRACTSThis research entitled “Taboo Words in English and Biak Language: A Contrastive Analysis” is analyzed and described in sociolinguistic field. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the types and meaning of taboo words and to analyze their differences and similarities. This research used a descriptive method. The data are analyzed using theory of Wardhaugh (1986:230) to find out the types, using Leech’s theory (1981:19) to find out the meaning, and were contrasted to find out the differences using Lado’s theory (1971:217). The significances of this research are theoretically, this research is expected to give contribution to the development of sociolinguistics especially in terms of taboo words and to practically it can be useful, for young Biak generation who want to learn taboo words in English and for foreign learners who want to study taboo words in Biak language. The result of this research shows that taboo words found in Biak language were classified into eight types, they are, sex, excretion, bodily function, death, animal, religion, and supernatural. The simillarities in English and Biak Language is the use of this word can cause misunderstanding and the differences of English and Biak Language is taboo words in Biak have levels whereas in English there is no level. This shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express the happiness, such as anger, emotion, and surprise, to joke, to insult, and to talk about sex. Keywords : Taboo Words; English and Biak Language; Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Error Analysis of English in Social Media WhatsApp”, is an attempt to identify, classify, analyze and describe the kinds of errors in the use of Social Media WhatsApp. This research is expected to help the language development and give information in order to increase knowledge to understand error analysis especially in the WhatsApp. Ellis’s theory is used to identify, classify and analyze the Error Analysis of English in Social Media WhatsApp. This research used an error analysis which has been done in several stages preparation was made by reading text status and chat in the WhatsApp. Data was taken from text status and chat in the WhatsApp. The writer use some techniques of analyzing the data, as follows, identification of error, classification of error and analyze of error. The result of this research shows that there are 71 total data in the “text status" and “chat” on WhatsApp. The 3 kinds of error analysis in the theory of Ellis, which are Ommision, Misinformation and Misordering. This research is expected to be a benefit for everyone especially for those who interested in Applied Linguistics. Keywords: Error Analysis, Status, Chat, WhatsApp

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe research was conducted due to students' low ability in mastering English vocabulary. This research aimed at finding out how the use of picture storybook could improve the students' mastery at Group B of TK Suci Castellia Manado. This research used classroom action research. It was done in two cyles, which consisted of two meetings for each cycle. The researcher did the research based on the procedures of classroom action research which are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data were obtained from observations, an interview, documentation and tests (pre-test and post-test). It was found that the use of picture storybook on the first cycle showed a slow increase in the students' ability to master English vocabulary. In the second cycle, some improvements were made during the learning process. In this second cycle, English vocabulary at Group B students increased with the use of picture storybooks. The second cycle showed that the mastery of English vocabulary tended to increase. From both cycles, it indicates that the use of picture storybook can improve students' vocabulary mastery at Group B of TK Suci Castellia Manado. Abstract

ABSTRACT            The title of this research is “Friendship in the Film Big Hero 6 by Walt Disney Animation Studios” and it is intended as a requirement to accomplish a degree at the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The aims of this study are to analyze the friendship aspect and the depiction of friendship reflected in the film Big Hero 6 through the portrayal of the characters named, Hiro, Go Go, Honey Lemon, Fred, Wasabi, dan Baymax. Theories from some experts are being applied in this study, such as theory from Dessai (2010) to unfold the definition of friendship in general and theory from Grieff (2009) to describe the elements of maintaining friendship.  The results show that 1) the characters portray 5 friendship aspects which are solidarity, sacrifice, trust, understanding, and teamwork; (2) the depictions of friendship through some characters that are always there for Hiro; Baymax who gives his life for Hiro, the shape of trust between Hiro and Baymax, Baymax’s sensitivity of understanding the circumstances, and hand in hand to defeat the villain.Keywords: Friendship, Film, Animation, Big Hero 6.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled ?The Analysis of Children Violation in the Novel The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor?s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The focus of this study is to identify and classify the types of violence against children reflected in this novel, and the impact experienced by the main character, Meg. The writer used the concept of Child Abuse by Tracy Natasha (2012) to analyze the types, the causes, and the impacts toward victim. The writer also used the theory of Literature by Wellek and Warren to identify the intrinsic approach such as the plot, theme, and character. The result of this research shows four types of violation suffered by the victim, such as emotional, physical, sexual, and neglect based on the plot, the dialogues between the characters, and the actions portrayed in the novel.       Keywords: Child Abuse, Neglect, Violation, Literature

Abstract

ABSTRACT            The title of this research is “Moral Values in the Movie Wonder by Stephen Chbosky” and it is intended as a requirement to accomplish a degree at the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The aims of this study are to analyze the moral values in the movie Wonder through the portrayal of the main character named August Pullman and to identify the conflicts that the character deals with. Theories from a few experts are being applied in this study, such as theory from Pojman (2000) to unfold the morality in general, theory from Bohlin (2005) to unfold the morality in literature and conflict in characters, theory from Morrell (2009) to unfold the conflict and types of conflict in literature and theory from Roberts and Jacobs (1986) to unfold the function of conflict in literature. The results show that the main character, August Pullman, deals with several conflicts in his life such as conflict against syndrome, against low self-esteem, against bullying, and conflict to have a best friend; and the moral values out of all those conflicts that the main character deals with is that we need to be kind, do not lose faith in friendship, good personality is all that matters, true beauty comes from within, tears are the contemplation of self-motivation, things people deal make them who they are, and bullying could be a way to success.Keywords: Moral Values, Conflicts, August Pullman, The Movie Wonder.

Abstract

ABSTRACT               This research entitled "Deiksis dalam film God’s Not Dead Karya Harold Cronk"The purpose of this study is to identify and classify the types of deixis and analyze the use of deixis in the film God’s Not Dead by Harold Cronk. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data used in this study were taken from sentences in the film God’s Not Dead. Data analysis uses Levinson's theory.The results of this study indicate that there are 5 types of deixis in film God’s Not Dead, those are person  deixis (first person: I, I'm, mine, me, we, second person: You, your, yourself and third person: They, them, he, she's, his, everyone). Place deixis: World, Podium, Classroom, Pool, Roman Colosseum, La Rive Gauche, Park, Class, In front of a room, Dakar, Zurich, Zurich, Frankfurt, Frankfurt and Carter International. Time deixis: Next Friday, 3 sessions, 20 minutes, Some 13.7 billions years ago, 2500 years, Next week’s, Tomorrow, 2000 years ago, Year, One day and All the time. Discourse deixis : That, This, Those, It's. Social deixis: Prosecutor, Defense attorney, Jury, My friend, Ladies, Gentleman, Brave young freshman, My father, Honey, Meciful Father, Silly boy, Minority, Freshman. While the analysis related to the use of deixis in the film Gods Not Dead found the use of gestural deixis and symbolic deixis. Abstract

ABSTRACTS               This study is an attempt to identify and to analyze the Wedding myths in Tombulu and England based on Barthes concept from the point of view of semiotics. This is attended to contrast the wedding forms of both tradition in the case of England and Tombulu. The aspect of this research is related to the sign system as proposed by Barthes. They are denotative and connotative. The term of signified, signifier and sign means something which is conventional and accepted by certain sign, related to what the myths. The England’s data have been collected from several book and websites, whereas the Tombulu have been taken directly from wedding event and by interviewing the informants from the Village of Wailan in District of Tomohon in regency of Minahasa. The results of research show that the wedding myths of both have a similarities in the aim of wedding function. The differences of both a myths are follows as convention wedding Myths event in England culture and the convention wedding myths in Tombulu culture. The writer hopes that this society will help student in understanding the system of wedding myths in England and Tombulu.        Keyword : Myths, Wedding, Tombulu, Britain, Contrastive Analysis
