Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to describe the values of the American ethos concept in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. This study uses the American ethos theory of Herbert McClosky in the book of Traditional Value in American life (1974). The object of this research is the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum, that was downloaded from internet media. The focus of this study is a consept of the American ethos in the novel and classification of the types of characters in the novel. The data collection technique used is a careful reading technique, recording, and interpretation. Two approaches were used, namely intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The data analysis technique used is descriptive. The results of the study are as follows. (1) Concept of the American ethos in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum that showing the attitudes, actions, and dialogues of the characters. Therefore, the values of the American ethos concept are found, namely ambition and achievement, profit pursuit and personal interests, as well as competition. (2) The types of characters possessed by the characters namely amoral, expedient, conforming, irrational-conscientious, and rational-altruistic. (3) The types of character reflected in the American ethos, namely amoral, expedient, and rational-altruistic.      Keywords: American Ethos, Types of Character, Values

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe study entitled “Gender in English and Sangir Language (A Contrastive Analysis)” is an attempt to identify, analyze, describe and contrast English and Sangir Language which focuses on gender. The writer analyzed the gender based on the concept of Trudgill (1987), and contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1957). The aims of this study are to describe the relationship between gender and language which focuses on vocabulary and to find out the differences between the two languages. The results of this research show that English language has six categories of gender, namely: occupations, nouns, term of address, adjectives, personal pronouns and the name of animals in the form of masculine, feminine and neutral. Sangir language has seven categories of gender, namely: term of address, adjectives, nouns, verb, occupations, name of animals and personal pronouns in the form of masculine, feminine, and neutral. The differences of both languages can be seen in Sangir language which has gender-related verbs, but English does not have any. Key words: Ethnolinguistic, Gender, Contrastive Analysis, English, Sangir Language.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled Aspect Linguistik in English language and Manado-Malay language (Contrastive Syntax Analisis). The aims of this research are to identify, to classify, to analyze and also to contrast the aspect in English and Manado Malay language. This research is expected to contribute to the development of linguistics in particular the syntax study and also for those who want to know more about aspects.This research used a descriptive method. The English data were collected from books, while Manado Malay language data were collected from several native speakers who live in Warukus 3 Malalayang 1, Manado and Bible in Manado Language. The writer used Aarts & Aarts’s and Chaer’s theory in analyzing the data and Lado’s theory (1957) in contrasting both languages to find out their differences. The result shows that the kind of apects in English and Manado Malay language are progressive and perfective aspect. The differences in aspects between English and Manado Malay language are in English language the progressive aspect marked by to be + Ving, while in Manado Malay language it is indicated by the prefix 'ba' to express the ongoing event. Perfective aspect in English language are marked by -ed at the end of the verb, while in Manado Malay language the perfective aspect marked by ‘so’. Keywords: Aspect, English, Manado-Malay, Contrastive Syntax Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Styles of Leadership as Reflected in the Novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ by Ernest Hemingway”. In this research, the writer focuses on the styles of leadership as reflected in the novel. The novel itself is based on Hemingway’s experiences during the Spanish Civil War and features an American protagonist, named Robert Jordan, who fights with Spanish guerrillas for the Republicans. The purpose of this research are to identify and classify the styles of leadership as reflected in the novel and to analyze how styles are reflected through the novel. In this research the writer used qualitative method and described it descriptively. The writer analysed the leadership styles through the character in the novel by using Martin’s theory of characterisation (2004) by looking on character’s features, actions, intentions, desires, and traits. The data were analysed based on Goleman’s theory styles of leadership (2000). There are six styles of leadership, those are: coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching.The results of this research shown six styles of leadership as reflected in the novel, those are coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching. Abstract

ABSTRACT            The research is entitled "Meningkatkan Kemampuan Mendengar Siswa Sekolah Dasar dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan Metode TPR (Total Physical Response)”. This research is conducted in order to improve students’ listening skills using the total physical response (TPR) method at the fifth grade of SD Negeri 70 Manado. The aims of this research were to find out whether there was an improvement of students’ listening skills before and after being taught using the TPR method. In conducting this research, the researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. This research consisted of one cycle that consisted of four steps, they are: Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. To collect the data, the researcher did three steps, such as: Pre-test, Treatment, and Post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used quantitative research design. The quantitative data were obtained from the fifth grade students’ scores of the pre-test and post-test. The results showed that the total physical response can improve the students listening skills at the fifth grade of SD Negeri 70 Manado. The improvement could be seen from pre-test and post-test scores in the one cycle. In the pre-test, the main score is 60.95 and in the post-test, the main score is 90.55. The average score of post-test was higher than pre-test, with an increase of 48.56%. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that TPR is effective for teaching listening skill. Keywords: CAR, TPR Method, Listening, Quantitative Research Design, Elementary School

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled  “Slang in the  film Suicide Squad by David Ayer”. This research aims are to identify the slangs found  in the Film Suicide Squad, and analyze and describe their forms and meanings.The slangs data were collected from the film script which consists of 41 pages. The writer also uses some theory that related to slang language and definition of slang the theory used in this research is by Bloomfield and Guth. Theoretically, the writer hopes that this research can give some contributions to the enlargement especially of the sociolinguistics field more especially on slang word.From analysis this research, the writer analysis found six types of slang, they are: abbreviation, facetious mispronunciation, shortened, interjection, figurative, nick name (calling person).Form this research, the result show that are 2 slangs in the abbreviation, 10 slangs in facetious mispronunciation, 11 slangs in shortened, 8 slangs in interjection, 11 slangs in figurative, and 18 slangs in nick name.                                                                                                                                          Keyword: Slang, Film Suicide Squad, Bloomfield and Guth’s theory

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe research is entitled ?Motivasi Guru Bahasa Inggris dalam Memilih Karier Mengajar: Studi Kasus di Sekolah Menengah Atas Airmadidi?. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the English Teachers? types of motivation in choosing teaching as a career. And also, it is to analyze and describe the main motivations that exist in English Teachers?. This research uses a descriptive method. The writer collected the data by interviewing English Teachers with a total of 7 participants from two schools, SMA N I Airmadidi and SMK Klabat Airmadidi. The writer has found 3 types of motivation from the results of this study namely Altruistic Motives, Intrinsic Motives and Extrinsic Motives. The findings of this research showed that 4 English Teachers chose Altruistic Motives, 2 English Teachers? chose Extrinsic Motives and 1 English Teachers? chose Intrinsic Motives. In this research, the writer also found 3 main motivations specifically that appear most often. First, factors from family and parents count 10 times. Second, educate count 7 times. The third, to build or shape of children character counted 4 times and the main motivation in general are extrinsic motives totaling 16, altruistic motives totaling 13 and followed by intrinsic motives totaling 5.      Keywords:  Motivation, English Teachers?, Career

Abstract

 ABSTRACTThis research’s aim is to see the students’ knowledge improvement in learning Present Continuous Tense through songs. The improvement can be seen by comparing the students' score before and after the treatment in form of teaching. The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the research method. This research was done at the fifth grade of SD Kemala Bhayangkari Manado. The subject was all the students of the class which consists of 22 students. Steps that the researcher took in collecting the data were: Pre-test, Treatment, and Post-test. The data were analyzed in quantitative ways which obtained from the students’ pre-test and post-test score. The research finding indicated that learning with songs improved the students’ knowledge about Present Continuous Tense. The improvement was shown from the increased score of the students in Post-test after the treatment. The students’ main score on the pre-test was 49.99, and the students’ main score in the post-test was 83.5. The average score of post-test is higher than pre-test. In other words, There was an improvement of 67.33%. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that learning present continuous using songs is effective.  Keywords: CAR, Songs, Present Continuous Tense, Quantitative Research, Elementary School.
