Abstract

ABSTRAK The research entitled “Negative Sentence in English and Moni language: A Contrastive Analysis”, aims at identifying, describing and contrasting the use of negative sentences in English and Moni language. The author would like to find the form and meaning of negative sentence in English and Moni. The English data have been collected from several books, whereas the Moni language have been collected from interviewing of some informants. The collected data were classified according to their categories and analyzed descriptively based on the theorities of Quirk and Verhaar in terms of negative sentence structure and contrast the two languages by using the theory of Lado. The results of this study indicate that similarities and differences can be found in all kinds of negative sentences. English and Moni language have the same structure in term of negative sentences. Both languages are free of negative elements in the form of a single morpheme and free of negative elements in the interrogative sentence structure serves as a predicate.   Keyword : negative sentence structure, English and Moni language contrastive analysis.

Abstract

ABCTRACT This research has a title: Alih Kode Dalam Lirik Lagu Jepang One Ok Rock. The  research was conducted in order to find out three types of code switching based on the Poplack’s theory, and to find the reason why the composer of One Ok Rock used code switching on lyrics with the six functions of Appel and Muysken theory.There were some steps done in collecting the data after mastering the theory and also lyrics. The collected data were taken from internet, when the data were identified and, the data were rewritten in to this paper and they were classified according to their types and function. Finally, the data were analyzed descriptively by using three types of Poplack’s theory , and for the function the writer used Apple and Muysken’s theories.In this research the writer found three types of code switching, as follow inter-sentential switching has thirty seven data, tag switching has twenty two data, and intra-sentential switching has thirteen data. The most code switching used in this research is intersentential switching. The writer also found out the function of code switching base on the theory by Apple and Muysken, those are ,(a) referensial,(b) phatic,(c) metalinguistic,  (d) the directive, (e), poetic functions, and while expresive function are not found in data.Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Code Switching, Lyrics

Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi which is entitled “DiskriminasiRasdalamNovelaHeart of DarknessKarya Joseph Conrad” is a study about the social life of the African people to face the racial discrimination through the story and characters in the novella. There are two questions to be answered in this research namely: How the Racial Discrimination reflected in the novella Heart of Darkness and what is the effect of racial discrimination to all the society in Africa. The aims of this research are to analyze the reflection of racial discrimination by the white people in the novel and to analyze the social effect of racial discrimination to the black people in Africa. The writer uses theory from Aristotle, Wellek and Warren, and De Bonald to describe how the racial discrimination in Africa and what the effect to the people who face discrimination. The intrinsic and extrinsic approaches are applied and the descriptive method is used in this research. The result shows that discrimination give big effect to the black people in Africa who face the savagery and the violence.   Keywords:  Racial Discrimination, Effect, Black People, Heart of Darkness

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This research is entitled “Afiks-Afiks Derivasi Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Batak Toba (Suatu Analisis Kontrastif)”, written as a research report to describe and analyze the derivational affixes of both English and Toba Batak language in term of form, function and meaning in verb, noun, adjective, and adverb. The objective of this research is to find out the similarities and the differences of derivational affixes in English and Toba Batak language by using O’Grady’s (1987) theory and contrasting them using Lado’s (1971) method.  The English data were collected from several English textbooks, namely  Contemporary Linguistic Analysis : An Introduction (1987) by O’Grady and the data of Toba Batak Language were taken from four native speakers as informants who were born and lived in the land of Toba Batak and they were selected based on age, gender, and intelligence.  The results of this research show that the types of English derivational affixes are prefixes and suffixes. The types of Toba Batak derivational affixes are prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and confixes. The functions of both English and Toba Batak derivational affixes are to create new lexeme that may change the parts of speech or not.  The similarities of English and Toba Batak derivational affixes are both English and Toba Batak derivational affixes have prefixes and suffixes process. The differences of both derivational affixes are English derivational affixes form new English words through prefixation and suffixation; meanwhile, there are infixation and confixation in Toba Batak language. In context of meaning, English derivational affixes have prefixes that have negative meaning, but Toba Batak derivational affixes have no prefixes that denote negative meaning.  Key Word : Derivational Affixes of English, Toba Batak language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ASBTRACT This research is about “Taboo Words in Friends with Benefits Movie by Keith Merryman and David Newmann”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the types of taboo words and to analyze the causes of using them. This research is using a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, first step is preparation, the writer watches the movie to find out the data. Second step is data collection, the writer collects the taboo words found in the movie and compares it with the movie script then the writer identifies and classifies the kinds of taboo words according to Wardhaugh’s (1986: 230) theory. Third step is data analysis, to analyze the data about the causes of using taboo words, the writer uses the theory from Jay (2009: 155). The results of this research: First, it shows that there are 139 taboo words found in this movie and they were classified into six types, those are sex, bodily function, certain game of animal, death, excretion, and religion. All of the types of taboo words according to Wardhaugh (1986: 230) are found in this movie. Second, it shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express the emotions, such as anger, happy, and surprised, to talk about sex, to joke and to insult. Abstract

ABSTRACT.   This study is an attempt to describe and analyze person deixis which is found in the film Maleficent. The aim of this research is to identify and classify the type, and the function of person deixis used in the film. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data of deixis have been taken from the sentences in the film Maleficent and analyzed using Levinson’s concept. In English, there are 3 types of person deixis, those are: first person deixis, second person deixis and third person deixis. Deixis itself is a pointing term in language The result of this study shows that person deixis is classified into 3 type, those are: first person deixis: I, me, my, mine, us, our, we; second person deixis: you, your; and third person deixis: they, her, she, he him, it, its.     Keywords: Person deixis, Pragmatic Analysis, Film Maleficent

Abstract

ABSTRAK Laporan akhir ini membahas tentang analisis semantik perbedaan uchi ni dan aida ni dalam kalimat bahasa Jepang dimana keduanya sekilas mempunyai makna sama tetapi berbeda penggunaannya, sehingga tidak sedikit pembelajar bahasa Jepang yang melakukan kesalahan dalam memakai ungkapan ini. Hal ini disebabkan karena terbatasnya referensi yang membahas perbedaan dan persamaan antara keduanya.            Oleh sebab itu perumusan masalah yang diangkat penulis adalah apa makna perbedaan uchi ni dan aida ni serta persamaannya dalam kalimat bahasa Jepang. Adapun tujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan makna uchi ni dan aida ni serta persamaan maupun perbedaan pemakaiannya dalam kalimat bahasa Jepang. Pengumpulan data yang dilakukan penulis melalui kajian kepustakaan dan pengolahan data dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis semantik.            Hasil analisis semantik perbedaan uchi ni dan aida ni dalam kalimat bahasa Jepang adalah uchi ni dan aida ni ini digunakan untuk menyatakan dua kejadian, dimana kejadian kedua terjadi sebelum kejadian pertama selesai. Dalam penelitian ini juga, penulis menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan antara uchi ni dan aida ni. Persamaannya adalah untuk menunjukkan dua peristiwa yang terjadi secara bersamaan, sehingga dapat dipahami bahwa peristiwa kedua terjadi disaat peristiwa pertama masih berlangsung. Sedangkan perbedaannya adalah uchi ni berdasarkan emosi pembicara, ada rasa penyesalan jika terlambat dilakukan, sedangkan dalam aida ni tidak ada rasa penyesalan. Selain itu batasan jangka waktu yang dinyatakan oleh uchi ni adalah titik terjadinya perubahan waktu, sedangkan batasan jangka waktu yang dinyatakan oleh aida ni adalah titik selesai dilakukannya kegiatan.  Kata kunci: uchi ni, aida ni, semantik  要旨 本討論は日本語における「うちに」および「あいだに」の使い分け、異なるに関して、統語論の分析である。「うちに」および「あいだに」は両方同じ意味を持っているのに使い分けは異なっている。そのため、よく間違っている日本語学習者が少なくないである。一つの問題としては参考書が少ないからである。本討論の問題は「あいだに」および「うちに」の意味、使い分け、異なるについてどのように使われるのかと言うことを明らかにすることを目的とする。データーを集める方法は日本語教科書にある例文を集めて、最後に、レポートを書く際に記述的の理論に基づいて書くことにする。            日本語文中に「うちに」および「あいだに」の違い意味を解析した結果は「うちに」および「あいだに」は二つの出来事を表現するために使用されます。二番目の出来事は最初の出来事が完了する前に発生します。この研究においても、著者は「うちに」および「あいだに」の類似点と相違点を見出した。類似点は二つの出来事が同時に発生することを示して、二番目の出来事は最初の出来事がまだ進行中の時に発生することが分かります。相違点は話者の感情に基つく「うちに」は遅すぎると後悔する気持ちがありますが「あいだに」では後悔はありません。その以外、「うちに」で示される制限時間は時間の変化のポイントです。「あいだに」で示される制限時間は活動終了のポイントです。最後はこの研究の成果が日本語教育現場に多少なりとも役立てばと思っている。 キーワード:うちに、間に、意味論

Abstract

This study is an attempt to identify and analyze the symbols of wedding as one of the sign systems from semantic point of view. This is intended to contrast the wedding froms of both languages in this ­­­case English and Galela. The aspect of this resaearch is related to the sign systems as proposed by Pierce. They are icon, index and symbol. The term of symbol means something which is conventional and accepted by a crtain society, related to what symbolizes. The English data have been collected from several books and websites, whereas the Galela have been taken directly from wedding event and by interviewing the informants to explain what is unknown by writer. The information given by the informants from Tutumaloleo  village. The result of research shows that the wedding  symbols of both languages have similarities the aim of wedding fuction. The differences of both are as follows : wedding event in English culture is performance in modern style, while in Galela culture it is deeply based in traditional background. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at analyzing symbols in the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The writer chooses this topic because symbol is something that means more than it is; therefore symbol is very interesting to be analyzed. The writer uses descriptive method, which describes symbol from literary point of view. The approach used is intrinsic approach. Accordingly, it involves some efforts such as collecting data and analyzing it by using the theory from Landy (1972) and Kennedy (1991). This study shows that there are 67 symbols in total in this novel that fulfilled all the 6 kinds of symbols; 23 word symbols, 23 action symbols, 8 object symbols, 6 character symbols, 4 phrase symbols and 3 scene symbols. There are also major symbols, which are The Letter A and Pearl. These symbols have connection between the major characters, who are Hester Prynne, Pearl and Arthur Dimmesdale. The writer hopes that this study can help students in understanding symbols.  Key words : types of symbols, major symbols, novel The Scarlet Letter

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Ujaran dan Gerakan Tubuh dalam Mengekspresikan Kemarahan dalam Film The Hunger Games Trilogi oleh Suzanne Collins”. Facial emotion and tone of the speech play a major role in expressing these emotions, like sadness, angry, happiness, and disgust, while body movement is the act of generating the information such as facial expression, posture, and gesture. Based on this background, the writer is able to formulate this problem is what kinds of body movements that are used to accompany the speech production of anger in the movie The Hunger Games Trilogy. This objective of research is to analyze the speech and body movements in expressing anger in the movie The Hunger Games Trilogy. This research focuses on the film The Hunger Games Trilogy which consists in three parts. They are The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. The research uses descriptive approach in order to find out the speech production and body movements in expressing anger support by Thompson and Yule’s Theory. The result of this research shows that there are some speeches and body movements which found in expressing anger such as abuse while throwing something by body movement of hands, shout while body movement of pointing the finger, say in harsh manner while body movement of push by hands or foots, and shout while body movement show knife or something by body movement of hands.   Keywords: Speech, Body Movements, Expression, Anger, The Hunger Games Trilogy, Psycholinguistic Analysis
