Tell : Teaching of English Language and Literature Journal (e-ISSN 2657-2443 and p-ISSN: 2338-8927) is a journal of English Language Teaching (ELT), linguistics, and literature published in April and September by English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. This journal is committed to investigate and scrutinize present issues of ELT, linguistics and literature. Contributions in the forms of research-based and literature-review studies written by national and international scholars and researchers are welcomed. Abstract

This article aims to explore the work of fate in the sense of natural law and its manifestation in leading the life of the heroine in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles. The theoretical framework is the concept of fate and Sartre’s Existentialism by applying the concept of free will and personal responsibility. The analysis focuses on any natural events that happen in Tess’ life, which eventually become such fate agents in determining Tess’ life. The finding says that no matter how fateful her life is, Tess exhibits how much she stands on her own by revealing her own free will and her personal responsibility regarding her reaction towards the fateful events she undergoes.

Abstract

ABSTRACTWriting skill is considered difficult for students because they get difficult to develop the idea, apply the grammar, do not have any vocabularies. The objective of this research are to describe the effetiveness of Numbered Heads Together technique, to know signficant difference of using NHT compares to talking stick in teaching writing hortatory exposition text. This research was done on April, 13th 2016 to May, 17th 2016. This research used experimental design that the sample used XI-IPA3 as control class and XI-IPA4 as experimental class of SMA Wachid Hasyim1 Surabaya. Based on result of the research, NHT is effective to be used because the result of independent samples test showed that tcount>ttable (4,139>0,172). It means that H1 is accepted, there is significant difference between student’s ability in control and experimental class. Abstract

The process of determining the possible intention or purpose of Alice’s utterances is decipherable by applying politeness theory, particularly positive politeness strategy proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) as the main approach. The way she performs her efforts or struggle are mostly stated by using optimistic strategy which aims to ensure her interlocutor that she is “still Alice” who has outstanding intelligence and brightness and considered as a high flying academic carrer woman. It is shown through the modal verb “can” which expresses her abilities to conduct her activities and the tobe “am/is” that illustrates her conviction in delivering statements. It means that she builds and performs the optimism to maintain everything which has been accumulated by herself. Promise and giving understanding strategy are also used to portray the way she faces and survives on her Alzheimer. In promise strategy, it is shown through the modal verb “will” which indicates that she has a high intention to do something. While, in giving understanding strategy, it can be seen from innovative ways applied by herself. Although she has a disease which usually gets worse over time, but she tries hard with kinds of way to conquer it. Based on the previous description, there are some significances about positive politeness strategy in language. It is not only a strategy that is used to utter or assert a statement but it is also able to reveal the hidden meaning of the speaker. Therefore, by using positive politeness strategy, people can detect what actually desired by the speaker. In this research, this strategy is used by Alice because she wants to show that she tries hard for struggling against her Alzheimer. It is conducted by Alice as she does not want that the Alzheimer hold a rein on herself which can limit her abilities, break her carrer, and also affect the harmony of her family.

Abstract

Racial Discrimination of colored people has become popular in the history of the United Stated. The white people used to do this towards the black people. They got inconveniently treatments because they were black; furthermore they also suffered inequitable of privilege. However, it happens not only in the real life but also lies in the story of Edgar Allan novel. Therefore this research aimed at analyzing the racial discrimination which lies on the Edgar Allan novel written by John Neufeld, American Novelist for young adults and adults. In his first novel, Edgar Allan, the researcher found sorts of structural racism occurred in term of utterances and dialogs amongst the people in the novel. Related to the issue of racial discrimination which occurred in Edgar Allan novel, Lawrence and Kelleher (as cited in Nursani’s thesis, 2013) defined the term of structural racism as a system of hierarchy and inequity, primarily characterized by white supremacy to maintain their authority over oppressed people. In addition, the structural racism also occurs in this novel, such as in the form of aversive racial attitudes, individual racism, institutional racism, and interpersonal racism. Besides, it is also supported by many expressions of prejudice for examples, antilocution of prejudice, avoidance of prejudice, discrimination of prejudice and extermination of prejudice. So, to interpret the condition above, this research utilized descriptive qualitative approach to depict how the white people execute the subordinate people through their treatments of racism. For this case, Edgar Allan was the one who suffered all these treatments as he was really black taken from the adoption of agency by this white family. He was still three years old. Hence, he could not against this racial discrimination till he had to be returned to the adoption agency.

Abstract

This research analyzed about the using of turn-taking as the strategy in the radio talk show at Hard Rock FM in the topic Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, the guest was Myra Brown. It was analyzed because the researcher considered that turn-taking was one of strategies of language. The research approach was descriptive qualitative. It  identified the types of turn-taking, the speakers’ strategies, some reasons that the speakers took the turn, and the relation among the speakers after they took the turn. The main theories that the researcher used were discourse analysis by Gee (2011), turn-taking by Renkema (2004), and context by van Dijk (2009). This research discovered that there were three types of turn taking. They are speaker’s selection, speaker’s self choice, and speaker’s determination. Strategies that are used by the speakers, they are overlap, interruption, back-channel, and silence. One of the reasons that the speakers took the turn was that the hosts dig information from the guest related with the topic.

Abstract

Politic is always related to activities that influence the action and policies in government or society. This activity will gain or keep power on it. This research aimed to analyze Donald Trump’s utterances in his presidential campaign at November 16th, 2015 in Knoxville Convention Center. There are four objective of the research that must be answered; 1) The utterances that illustrated political discourse in Donald Trump Speech; 2) The way he delivered his political discourse; 3) The aim of the utterances; 4) Effect of the utterance to people. Descriptive qualitative was applied as the method of the research and the data of the research were the utterances that illustrated Donald Trump’s political discourse. The utterances were being analyzed using CDA’s Van Dijk supported by Fairclough and Wodak theory. The result showed his way to deliver his ideology in gaining power where in power; there is an ability to control people which in line with his purpose to win American’s heart. Trump’s political strategies succeeded to gain many supports that made him elected as the presidential candidate from the Republic party.
