Abstract

Islamic traditional activities will always intersect with interfaith communities. One of which is mosque loudspeakers that have been used for adhan at least five times a day. Mosque loudspeakers in some cultural setting, especially in rural communities, have been used to convey information rather than merely for adhan. However, in urban setting, the usage of mosque loudspeaker has been drawn pros and cons. Instead of providing peace, it creates noise in public spaces. Even in 2016, conflicts over mosque loudspeakers sparked and led to the burning of a worship center. The Minister of Religion issued a Circular Letter No. 05 of 2022 concerning the rules of mosque loudspeakers in order to prevent the re-emergence of inter-religious conflicts caused by mosque loudspeakers. This policy, however, has invited a polemic among public as it is considered lack of understanding of the cultural aspects behind the usage of mosque loudspeaker. This study aims to analyze the Circular Letter which is considered to have left cultural sociological consideration and seems to hegemonize the subcultures of urban communities over the traditional communities. The research applied to a literature study. This research found that the policy needs to be reviewed as it was considered not addressing the core of the problem.

Dating among youth is an interesting social phenomenon as two individu aggre to engage in a dyadic and romantic social interaction. Dating, from the beginning to its end,  illustrates the cycle of dynamic social interaction which is full of symbolism. This research uses perspective of social interaction and symbolic interactionism theory to analyse dating among university students and how they attach meaning to dating. Using a qualitative-phenomenology design, this research collected primary data through indepth interviews. Findings of this research suggest that the cycle of dating is similar to social interaction. It started with asosiative activities, such as introduction and some initial activities before the decision to date has been made. Some activities during dating symbolize the implementation of the agreement between two indivuals. Meanwhile, some disosiative activities symbolize the discontinuation of the agreement between them. Students consider dating as casual and simple social interaction rather than a courship that lead to marriage.

Abstract

Agriculture in Indonesia is experiencing uncertainty because of the uneven use of agricultural technology. On the other hand, farmers are trapped in poverty because of limited land ownership, capital and technology. Indonesian farmers do not get certainty concerning crop by-products due to limited land, small production yields due to inadequate technology and very volatile market prices for agricultural production. This study aims to explore the reasons for the delay in the development of the agricultural sector in Indonesia and its relation to agricultural politics. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This research found that the complexity of agricultural problems that occur in Indonesia is not only due to the lack of development in agricultural technology, but also caused by the lack of agricultural land that can be utilized by farmers

Abstract

Name is the basic identity for a person. The Pegayaman muslims community has a distinctive naming pattern that has integrated Balinese Hindu culture. This paper aims to explore the Pegayaman muslim self-name system with the subject of the system of determining the name, naming based on birth order and naming with Islamic nuances. This study employed qualitative methods. The data were collected by using interview and observation. The results showed that the system of naming children in the Pegayaman community based on birth order follows the Hindu Bali cultural naming system, namely Wayan, Nengah, Nyoman and Ketut. A naming system based on gender was also found, namely Siti for the female group and Muhammad for the male group. This name is then combined with names with Islamic nuances taken from Islamic figures, names of the Prophet, Islamic teachings, national figures and so on. This finding indicates that the naming system in the Pegayaman Muslims community has high complexity. This complexity is inseparable from the integration of Balinese culture in their lives. This phenomenon indicates that the Pegayaman community has a high tolerance, moderate and inclusive attitude.
