Abstract

The Savonius waterwheel is a type of waterwheel with a vertical shaft rotation direction that can be used to convert the potential energy of water into energy of motion. This waterwheel works due to the difference in the force received at each blade. This test uses two semi-circular gutter blades which are paired oppositely to resemble the letter "S". The discharge variations given are opening valve 1 (damped 2), opening valve 2 (damped 1), and opening valve 3 (undamped). The results obtained show that opening valve 1 has the highest efficiency value of 18.97% with water power of 7.672 W and waterwheel power of 1.455 W.

Abstract

The government is promoting the enforcement of over-dimensional and over-loading vehicles. Overloaded vehicles usually require a lot of power so it affects the results of exhaust emissions. This study aims to determine the results of emission tests by providing variations in load and speed on gasoline motorized vehicles, namely the Daihatsu Granmax Pick-Up 1.5 produced in 2014. The method used is experimental to determine the effect of independent variables (variations of load and speed) on the dependent variable (emissions exhaust gas). Variations of payload used are 0 kg, 735 kg, and 1200 kg with variations in speed of 0 km/hour, 10 km/hour, 20 km/hour, 30 km/hour, and 40 km/hour. The result of the experiment is that when the vehicle is unladen, with variations in speed, the Carbon monoxide (CO) and Hydro Carbon (HC) levels will be higher with a CO value of 0.83% and HC 121 ppm at a speed of 40 km/hour. When the vehicle is loaded according to GVW and given a variety of speeds, CO and HC levels increase with a CO value of 1.43% and HC 362 ppm at a speed of 40 km/hour. Meanwhile, if the vehicle is given a variation of speed with overload, the CO value rises to 3.30% and HC becomes 516 ppm at a top speed of 40 km/hour. So it can be concluded that the load variable and speed variations affect exhaust emissions and the largest exhaust emissions occur in overloaded vehicles.

Abstract

This study presents the design, topology optimization, additive manufacturing, and experimental validation of a DJI F450 drone arm to enhance structural efficiency and energy performance. The original arm, made of PA66-30GF, was replaced with PLA for 3D printing, and topology optimization was applied to reduce mass while maintaining stiffness. Static structural simulations under thrust and lateral loads showed that the optimized design (Design 2.0) significantly reduced maximum stress and deformation under vertical load, while remaining within safe limits under lateral load. Experimental deformation tests validated the simulation results, with deviations of 0.64–3.89%. Flight tests demonstrated that Design 2.0 reduced battery consumption by 14.3% during 5-minute hovering, extending flight time by approximately 50 seconds. The study confirms that combining topology optimization with additive manufacturing can produce lightweight, high-performance drone components that improve both structural integrity and operational efficiency.

Abstract

To overcome the problem of lack of drinking water during the dry season in certain areas, it is necessary to take advantage of technological advances, namely presenting a device to produce water called an air-water generator. However, the capabilities of this machine are still very varied and even very low, therefore it is necessary to conduct further research on this machine. This study aims to determine the influence of evaporator pipe diameter on the mass of water produced. This research was carried out experimentally using a cooling machine with a parallel evaporator made in the laboratory and the working fluid used was R134a refrigerant. The compressor used is a rotary type 0.5 PK compressor. The diameters varied were 1.00 mm, 2.00 mm and 3.00 mm. The results indicated that the highest water mass was 0.330 kg per hour obtained using a pipe diameter of 1.00 mm. Meanwhile, the highest coefficient of performance (COP) was 7.34, obtained at a pipe diameter of 1.00 mm and the highest total heat transfer rate absorbed by the evaporator from the air occurred at a pipe diameter of 1.00 mm, which was 40.4 W.

Abstract

This study investigates the fluid flow characteristics and aerodynamic forces acting on three circular cylinders arranged in a tandem serial–parallel configuration using a combination of numerical simulations and experimental measurements. The spacing ratio between cylinders (N/D) was varied from 0.1 to 1.1, while the Reynolds number ranged from 5,029.6 to 21,124.4. The numerical analysis was conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to evaluate the flow structure and drag coefficient (Cd), and the results were subsequently validated through experimental testing in a subsonic wind tunnel. The findings indicate that both the inter-cylinder spacing and the Reynolds number have a significant influence on wake structure, pressure distribution, and drag magnitude. At small N/D ratios, strong wake interactions between the cylinders generate extensive recirculation zones, low rear pressure, and high drag coefficients. As the N/D ratio increases, wake interference weakens, the flow becomes more orderly and symmetric, and the pressure distribution becomes more uniform, leading to a substantial reduction in drag. A consistent decrease in Cd with increasing Reynolds number is also observed for all configurations. The close agreement between numerical and experimental results demonstrates that the CFD approach accurately captures the flow behavior and aerodynamic forces. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing tandem cylinder geometries in engineering applications, particularly for drag reduction and the enhancement of aerodynamic efficiency.

Abstract

Calcium carbide waste has demonstrated potential as an adsorber material for motorcycle exhaust emission control; however, the internal flow and thermal mechanisms governing its performance remain unclear. This study presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of exhaust gas flow through a calcium carbide waste adsorber to elucidate pressure, velocity, temperature, and turbulence characteristics. Simulations were conducted for adsorber lengths of 50, 100, and 150 mm, with the 150 mm configuration selected as a representative case due to similar overall trends. The results indicate a gradual pressure reduction along the exhaust system, flow acceleration within the adsorber due to cross-sectional constriction, and non-uniform temperature distribution influenced by asymmetric flow patterns. Turbulence kinetic energy increases upon gas entry into the adsorber and varies with adsorber length, highlighting the role of geometry in flow mixing and turbulence dissipation. These findings provide physical insight into the mechanisms underlying the emission reduction observed in previous experimental studies.

Abstract

One type of dryer frequently used in agricultural drying is the rotary dryer. When solids are dried in a rotary dryer, a transport phenomenon occurs that includes the simultaneous transfer of mass, heat, and momentum. This study aims to determine the effect of the number of exhaust fans on the drying performance of turmeric using a rotary dryer. The number of exhaust fans used varied from 1, 2, and 3 units. The main parameters observed included the final moisture content, drying rate, and energy efficiency. The results showed that the use of one exhaust fan resulted in the lowest final moisture content compared to other configurations. During the 8-hour drying process, the rotary dryer with one exhaust fan was able to reduce the turmeric moisture content from 89% to 57.8%, with an average drying rate of 0.55 kg/hour. The use of one exhaust fan resulted in an optimal temperature range of 50–60°C. In addition, this configuration also showed relatively high energy efficiency, ranging from 10.8% to 25.5%. Therefore, the use of a single exhaust fan in a rotary dryer is considered the most optimal configuration in balancing the quality of drying results and energy efficiency.

Abstract

A coaster is a cup base designed to protect table surfaces from scratches and condensation drops from drinks. However, in their use, various problems are still encountered, such as low capacity to hold condensation drops, the lack of straw holders, and poor stability on slippery surfaces. This research used a product development method comprising three main stages: planning, design, and testing. This research aims to develop a more functional coaster design by adding several innovative features, namely a place to collect condensation drops, a hygienic straw holder, an anti-slip rubber layer, and a magnetic system to keep the handle and straw holder from coming off easily. The design process was carried out in Autodesk Inventor, then produced using FDM type 3D printing with Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG) and laser cutting with acrylic. The base model of a coaster was derived from the Forgecore coaster, and the developed coaster was tested through several functional tests, including condensation container tests, glass stability, coaster stability, magnetic strength, and ease of use of additional features. The test results showed that all features functioned as designed and provided a significant performance improvement compared to the coaster made by Forgecore. Thus, this 3D-printed coaster design proves to be effective and feasible as an innovative product that supports daily work and study activities.

Abstract

The number of motor vehicles worldwide increases every year, leading to higher pollution levels. To address this issue, various efforts have been made, one of which is improving vehicle design to enhance aerodynamics. This study aims to analyze the improvement in aerodynamic performance of the Mataram University prototype electric vehicle design. The computational fluid dynamics method was employed to achieve this objective. In this study, velocity variations of 10.48 m/s, 14.65 m/s, 18.82 m/s, 22.98 m/s, and 27.15 m/s were used. The results indicate an improvement in aerodynamics, as evidenced by a 5.682% reduction in the average drag coefficient compared to the initial design (2023). This reduction in drag coefficient signifies an enhancement in the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency, which positively impacts overall efficiency and reduces energy consumption.

Abstract

The use of composite materials with superior mechanical properties has become an important focus in addressing the challenges of continuously advancing technology, particularly for applications that require lightweight materials with high strength and good corrosion resistance. One material that has attracted considerable interest is aluminum due to its favorable physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. However, aluminum has limitations in terms of hardness and wear resistance, which still need to be improved. This study aims to evaluate the effect of adding silicon carbide particles (SiCp) on the porosity characteristics and wear resistance of aluminum matrix composites (AMC) produced using the stir casting method, which is a technique involving the mixing of molten metal and reinforcement particles through continuous stirring. The casting process was carried out at a temperature of 700 °C. The variations of SiC composition used were 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%. Wear testing was conducted using the reciprocating ball-on-flat method in accordance with the ASTM G133-05 standard, while the porosity level was analyzed through immersion of the samples in a liquid fluid. The results show that an increase in the weight fraction of SiC leads to a reduction in the wear rate, with the lowest wear rate reaching 1.27 × 10⁻⁷ g/cycle at a 4% SiC fraction and the highest at 0% SiC amounting to 1.84 × 10⁻⁶ g/cycle. In contrast, the porosity calculation shows an increasing trend from 1.85% at 0% SiC to 27.18% at a 4% SiC fraction.
