"SANGKHAKALA" refers to the shell horns that blown regularly to convey certain messages. In accordance with the meaning, this journal expected to become an instrument in the dissemination of archaeological information to the public which is published on an ongoing basis. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala is a peer-reviewed journal published biannual by the Balai Arkeologi Sumatera Utara in May and November. The first edition was published in 1997 and began to be published online in an e-journal form using the Open Journal System tool in 2015. Berkala Arkeologi Sangkhakala aims to publish research papers, reviews and studies covering the disciplines of archeology, anthropology, history, ethnography, and culture in general.

Abstract

AbstractLake area, such as Ranu Klakah, Ranu Gedang and Ranu Segaran, is the past settlements area which occupied by people since the neolithic period which were marked by the use of square pickaxe artifact. Activity in ranu region continue until the next period which is characterized by the existence of megalithic monuments, the remains of an old temple, and tomb from the early days of the entry of Islam, even now, the location of ancient settlements are still used as a residential location

Abstract

AbstractHuman statue in the ancient graves at Tanah Batak is a symbol of ancestor. Stance is associated with cult and repellent function of disaster. Making a simple style human statues or often called “primitive” describes the continuity of culture or tradition of megalithic. Simple style of the displayed image illustrates the high art of making statues associated with the objectives related to the old region of Batak ethnic.The existence of the human statues that can also be viewed as a form of local wisdom in maintaining the original elements of Batak society.

Abstract

AbstractDiscussion on the visualization of secondary communal graves on Samosir intended to study the problems related to the captured messages by the public based on visual signs that are used when looking at a tourism promotion. Messages that are captured visually by the communicants (receiver of the messages) apparently can differ from the initial messages from communicator (sender of the messages). Through visual communication approaches that deliver is expected the messages can be accepted by the public in order to increase the tourist visits.

Abstract

AbstractAt first, Penyengat Island is merely an island that visited by sailor for taking fresh water supply. In the subsequent period, given the strategic significance of the island was later used as a defense of the island. At a very critical condition, it threatens the existence of the Kingdom of Riau, the island is even used as a center of the kingdom but eventually as the collapse of Riau authority, the island was eventually abandoned.

Abstract

AbstractSimangambat temple was reported by Schnitger, a Dutch Scholar, in 1935. At that time Simangambat was already became a brick ruins, some of sandstones were bare a very beautiful relief. In 2008 and 2009 a team from National research and development center for archaeology and Medan archaeological office tried to revealed all of things about Simangambat, its architecture, religious, art, and style.

Abstract

AbstractDepictions of human reproduction is found in many megalithic buildings. The magical reproductive function is often equated between the phallus and the vulva. It tends to occur in communities that no longer has a cultural context that is consistent with the idea of megalithic. For it is very important to do a review of reproductive function approach to the concept of the symbols and the binary opposition. This is done considering means of reproduction as a symbol that has a different function with each other. Moreover, the concept of binary opposition developed until now.

Abstract

AbstractNow, traces of free trade in the archipelago can not be separated from the past maritime trade activities, especially trade relations with Chinesse people. Past trading activity on the east coast of North Sumatera can be traced through the rest of the remains of material culture objects, particularly objects of material culture with respect to trading actvities. This can be traced through the remains of material cultural objects found on the site of Kota Cina dan Kompei Island located in the east coast of North Sumatera.
