Abstract

A retrospective study was done on 25 cases of Neonatal Meningitis from 1972 up to 1980 at Dr. Pimgadi Hospital Medan. Their age variation was from one day to one month. The early prominent symptoms were refusal of feeding in 23 cases (92%), decrease of consciousness in 21 cases (84%), fever in 16 cases (64%}, convulsion in 15 cases (60%) and vomiting/diarhea in 8 cases (32%). Diagnosis was based on clinical symptoms and Cerebrospinal fluid examination.

Abstract

From April to May 1982, 59 children with gastroenteritis, aged 0 - 3 years (34 males and 25 females) had been examined for Rotavirus at the Department of Child School of Medicine, University of North Sumatera/Dr. Pirngadi General Hospital, Medan. Rotavirus detection was done with the Elisa method. It was found that 32 patients (54.24%) had Rotavirus in their feces. The youngest patient was 2 days old. Vomiting was more pronounced in the Rotavirus group. Degree of temperature did not differ significantly in both groups. From the 32 Rotavirus patients, 71.81% was bottle fed and 28,12% breast fed. From the bottle fed infants with diarrhoea, there were 23 (79,31 %) patients with Rotavirus. From the 21 breast fed patients with diarrhoea, there were only 9 (42,85%) infants with Rotavirus.

Abstract

An intracutane tuberculin test with several types of allergens was conducted on 110 asthmatic children under the age of 14 years at the Subsection of Allergic diseases and Immunology of the Internal Diseases Section, in cooperation with the Department of Child Health, Gajah Mada University, Pugemn Hospital, in Yogyakarta. The number of children found to be sensitive to house dust, human dander, grass pollen, fungus, collection of animal danders, "mite" (Pteronysinus pterygoideus), and bacteria vaccine were 82 (75,5%), 80 (72. 7%), 0 (0%), 3 (2. 7%), 1 (0,9%), 23 (20.9%), and 20 {18.1%), respectively. It was also found that four ( 3.6%) of the children did not develop any reaction to all allergen types. It was further concluded that the numbers of children being allergic to just one type of allergen were as follows : house dust 2 (1.8%); human dander 0 (0%), hence all patients allergic to the human dander were also allergic to house dust; fungus 1 (0.9%); collection of animal danders 1 (0.9%); "mite" 2 (1.8%); bacteria 19 (17.3%). The highest incidence of reaction to more than one allergen were to house dust+human dunders: 80 (72. 7%); to house dust+ "mite": 21 (21.91%); and to house dust+human dander +"mite": 17 ( 15.5%).

Abstract

A retrospective study on tuberculous meningitis had been carried out on 43 patients at the Department of Child Health, Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan during the year 1979. The peak incidence (55.81%) was found in the age group of less than 3 years of which 55.81% was in the second and 44,18% in the third stadium of the disease. Two of the cases were 4 months of age and 1 case was 14 years. None of the cases had got BCG immunization. Mortality rate was 37.21% of which 25% was in the second and 52.63% in the third stadium. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed that 46.50% had cell counts between 101-500 cells/mm3. The symptoms were prolonged fever (62. 79%), convulsions (72.09%) and unconciousness (27.90%). Of these cases 83.72% had contact with tuberculous patients; 6.9% had positive tuberculin test and 48,83% showed pulmonary involvement on radiological examination. Nutritional status of these cases showed that 48.83% were undernourished and 34.82% were in poor nutritional status.

Abstract

A case of Gilles de Ia Tourette's Syndrome is presented. This is the second reported case in Indonesia. The diagnosis was based on four essential features : childhood onset, multiple motor tics, vocal tics and changing pattern of the symptoms. The exact etiology of this syndrome is still unknown. It is proposed that patients with this illness could have hyperactivity of the dopaminergic systems in their basal ganglia. Symptomatic improvement has been achieved with haloperidol. The response to this drug could not be evaluated in this patient because of refusal to continue the treatment.

Abstract

A multigeneration rat feeding study was carried out with rhodamine B incorporated in the usual stockdiet [or albino rats. Rhodamine B is a red inedible synthetic dyestuff wrongly but widely used in Jakarta for colouring cheap snacks and drinks prepared at the homelevel and sold by streetvendors. Under the conditions of the experiment the main findings observed were : 1) retardation of growth, starting from birth to adulthood 2) decrease in reproductive ability as seen from continuing decrease of littersize with each following generation 3) behavioral changes of adult rats, such as itching, irritability, aggressiveness and cannibalism 4) increased susceptibility to infection (respiratory diseases) in adult rats resulting in decreased longevity 5) development of tumors in the lymphnodes. The purpose of this investigation is through reporting the findings to awake renewed interest on the part of the authority for the problem of provision of the so badly needed cheap but edible foodgrade colours for the less privileged members of the society.
