Abstract

The clinical efficacy of oral-glucose electrolyte (GE) solutions in the treatment of profound fluid losses in cholera is dramatic testimony to the persistent ability of the intestine to absorb glucose, salt and water in the face of severe diarrhea. Many thousands of patients have been successfully saved from almost certain death by drinking sufficient quantities of rehydration fluid.

Abstract

The title of this paper is rather pretentious, since many of these socalled new aspects have been studied in other countries before in a more intensive way. However, in Indonesia they have received the attention of the medical world only in recent years. The purpose of this paper is to report on the present state of nutritional surveys and research. As a matter of fact it is not feasible to discuss all new aspects of malnutrition in this paper.

Abstract

During the period of October 1975-January 1976 a study on the correlation between induration size of BCG vaccination and Mantoux test using 5 TU PPD-S has been undertaken on 1.100 non-BCG vaccinated children. Good correlation between induration, size of BCG vaccination and Mantoux test performed simultaneously were observed, particularly on the third day of examination, with the correlation equation of y=4.97 + 0.69X, and a coefficient of correlation = 0.99. Significant differences on the mean size of BCG induration on each Mantoux test group were also observed. The mean size of BCG induration in subjects showing Mantoux test of less than 5mm., 5-9mm., and 10mm. and over were 6.07mm., 12.20mm., and 16.69mm. respectively, while the standard deviation were 2.71mm., 3.65mm., and 4.31mm. respectively. It seems that BCG indication of 8mm. (3rd day) could be taken as an indication for further diagnostic studies in the early case finding of tuberculosis in children, especially in rural areas. However, further study on the correlation of BCG induration and the incidence of tuberculosis is still required.

Abstract

Recently a team approach is suggested in health care delivery to the community. Simple methods in evaluating health by professions other than the medical profession have to be designed. The teacher is the best person besides the medical personnels to be also involved in promoting the physical health of the school children. In order to assess this, a standard percentile distant curve growth chart drawn relevant to the local socio-economic condition is required. In developing countries a growth chart of the best nourished and circumstanced local group is suggested to be used as a standard (Tanner, 1973). The aim of this study is to provide the teacher such a growth chart. The subjects consisted of 10.342 pupils from 32 selected schools, from which centiles curves were drawn. The percentile curves showed that the 90 centile is below the 50 centile and the 50 centile below the 10 centile of the Harvard Standard.

Abstract

The incidence of G-6-P-D deficiency in Indonesia is not yet known. So far only Inyo Luan Eng (1964) reported the incidence in some parts of Indonesia. Other data are only from case reports. This study which consisted of 3200 babies -- born in the Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital from September 1975 through October 1976 proved that the incidence is high enough that is 2.66% (85 out of 3200). The hemoglobin content of G-6-P-D deficient babies showed an average of 14.4 g%. This gives us an idea that there is slight anemia in these babies. The incidence of jaundice was 35 out of 85 (41%). Factors inducing jaundice were infection, hypoxia and sub-aponeurotic bleeding. Of 60 which could be examined quantitatively only 2 showed a G-6-P-D activity level of more than 120 mu/10^9 RBC, so that the screening method could be used for early detection of G-6-P-D deficiency.

Guest lectures, 8. Home lectures, 9. Journal readings, 10. Experience in education, 11. Experience in research.
