Abstract

Cyberspace is no longer a stutter for the masses of consumers who are addicted to memes. It is no longer a confusion between what is reality and what is hyperreality for them. Meme is a digital design object that was born from the development of cyber power and has a message content in fulfilling the purpose of communicating, interacting socially through social media or social networks and digital culture. The message is composed of a network of signs that have a mechanism in it to produce meaning. Today, many memes have gone viral among the consumer masses, one of which is the meme Khong Guan biscuit. However, the phenomenon of the ‘hyper’ signs mechanism has not yet been written scientifically by researchers. In fact, the meme Khong Guan has a network of ‘hyper’ signs which from the beginning until now has moved dynamically and has succeeded in stealing the spotlight of the masses of Indonesian consumers. Therefore, hypersemiotics as a theory of ‘hyper’ signs and the results of criticism of conventional semiotics (especially structural semiotics which is closely related to structuralism) can be used as an approach to find out the movement of the ‘hyper’ sign elements in Khong Guan meme which is engaged in finding new codes and generate dynamic meaning.

Abstract

Virtual Reality arguably has been one of the most popular immersion media for many years, especially 360 Video Camera, but its utilization is only limited to entertainment purposes, thus this research would like to test wider potentials outside its evident field of interest. On the other hand, audio has always been the forgotten elements in many audio-visual productions because its intangibility, this research will explore one of many emerging audio sciences, which is Ambisonics / 3D Spatial Audio. By combining the two powerful elements, this research is trying to prove the user engagement and communication strategy’s effectivity especially in raising awareness for Indonesia’s bird’s conservation NGO called Burung Indonesia, where the 360 Video Camera captures the environment and 3D Spatial Audio captures the sound of Indonesia’s birdlife. Therefore, the output of this research is to discover new communication infrastructure through digital fabrication.

Abstract

The influence of globalization toward cultural context is a transaction of cultural things through industrial process affected by modernization. Tourism industry is one of the globalizations which produces cultural things to be commercialized financially and purposefully. One of cultural things to be commercialized in the era of globalization is traditional art. The issue coming up is how to develop patterns so that the supporters of traditional art as the subject of local wisdom are maintained, but hopefully it can, on the other hand, accommodate globalization demands, for both economic and sociocultural aspects which have commodified culture? With the aim of synergizing the existence of traditional art as cultural identity of supporters in sociocultural way and the demands of tourism industry that commodify culture, through field research using qualitative method, it can be concluded that. First, commodification of culture is inevitable in the era of 4.0 which develops in modernity, which can be seen from more developed tourism industry. Second, commodification of culture toward local wisdom can actually be solved with some strategies without marginalizing the supporters of the local wisdom and culture. Third, the space of traditional art as cultural identity can be maintained and revitalized from commodification of culture as long as the conceptual pattern can synergize the perception and responses of the supporters with the demands of tourism industry. Forth, one of the most relevant concept to accommodate the demands of commodification of culture is what is known as pseudo traditional art.

Abstract

A quadriplegic is a person who is not able to do activities like normal people due to disablement in their body. During this vast digital age, a technological invention that can help people with quadriplegic is the web camera that is used as a mouse— called a camera mouse— for the computer. Which can then be implemented with Microsoft word software so it can help to access a computer or laptop. Before being used with the camera mouse, Microsoft word itself requires a special mode, namely physical distancing mode. This mode will later be a plugin that can be activated in Microsoft word. The existing Microsoft word layout has not been able to accommodate the use of the camera mouse without errors. The current Microsoft word software is not able to stand alone incorporating a camera mouse because the layout does not accommodate the works of the camera mouse. Therefore, a plugin is needed to support the software, named an accessibility mode.

Abstract

The development of curatorial work practices will be very important for the development of museums, arts, and culture. However, it is undeniable that studies and understanding of the development of curatorial work practices are still not optimal in Indonesia. Awareness of the realm and responsibility of the curator is also sometimes poorly understood by the public and the practitioners of curatorial work practices themselves. This vacancy becomes an obstacle in the development of the profession of independent curator and museum curator. Where the curator profession is no longer seen only as a museum guard or seen only as a writer in an exhibition. The discourse in this study will raise the question of how curatorial work practices at OHD Museum are based on the field of work and responsibilities, which we can see from the different types of curators in an art museum. This study focuses on explaining and understanding the definition of curator and the types of the curator in the development of curatorial studies in an art museum. The results of this study indicate that from the division of In-House Curators and Guest Curators at the OHD Museum, they are distinguished by their field of work and responsibilities. The In-House Curators has responsibilities, among others; acquisition, deaccession, borrowing, conservation, restoration, documentation, and research, where related to the field of collection. Then, look at the Guest Curator with responsibilities, among others; creating a curatorial concept for an exhibition, selecting the collections and artists involved, producing a narrative document (curatorial text), and designing an exhibition.

Abstract

One way to convey student ideas and concepts is through exhibitions. We are in a pandemic COVID-19, the Graphic On Product (GOP) course in the Visual Communication Design study program at Universitas Ciputra (VCD UC) Surabaya uses virtual exhibitions as an alternative service so that students can still expose their work, considering it is part of the exam assessment and is a pass requirement. This study aims to find views on the effectiveness of virtual exhibitions as learning media in GOP courses, used for future considerations, including after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses qualitative methods through descriptive analysis of the results of data collection from exploration sources. The virtual exhibition of Graphic On Product VCD UC Surabaya is the subject of research in this study. The informants who will be the study are determined using the purposive sampling method. From the results of the interview, it can be concluded that the virtual exhibition in the GOP course runs quite effectively as a learning medium. The exhibition has given students access to appreciation from visitors, but there is no access to negative comments that can be constructive in their next work. In the future, virtual exhibitions are considered to still be able to be carried out, even after the COVID-19 pandemic because they have a wider range of visitors and the use and operation of the gallery is quite easy but adequate gadgets and internet are needed to be able to access virtual exhibitions.

Abstract

Jewelry is an important and inseparable part of Payas Agung Badung's clothing. In the past, the nobles of the Badung kingdom had exclusive rights to Payas Agung (Balinese Traditional Uniform) which were used only at certain times, such as religious rituals and traditional events. Payas Agung Badung is still used today. specifically for weddings and tooth-filling in the Badung district and Denpasar city. The unique nature of this dress does not only come from the material and design aspects but also from the socio-cultural aspect, especially the artistic value of Payas Agung Badung clothing, which has a strong character. Traditional fabrics harmoniously blend with Balinese jewelry. The focus of this research is on jewelry which is the center of attention of the overall appearance of Payas Agung Badung. This research is a qualitative study using aesthetic theory. The primary data was obtained from the jewelry used at Payas Agung Badung in the period from 1930 to 1970. The secondary data were photographs belonging to the Puri Anom family in Denpasar. The results showed that the beauty of jewelry at Payas Agung Badung comes from intrinsic values, such as raw materials and motifs, as well as extrinsic values, such as the pakem (aesthetic principles) and deep meaning of the jewelry.

Abstract

Arts and culture make Bali one of the world's tourist destinations. At first glance, it seems that Balinese art and culture are holding up well. In fact, various media reports that several art forms have become extinct, such as the Sang Hyang dance, the baris kraras dance, the wayang wong dance, and so on. Even in Karangasem, there are ten traditional arts that have become extinct. In Badung Regency, there are fifteen types of culture that are almost extinct, as well as in Buleleng and Denpasar. It is very important to save endangered art forms by using audio-visual media, especially documentary films. There is a documentary that is very interesting to study, namely a documentary entitled "Sang Hyang Jaran: Teja Darmaning Kauripan". This film records the re-embodiment of the art of the Sang Hyang Jaran dance in Sanur Kaja Village, which was once extinct. The problem studied in this study is how to use the documentary film "Sang Hyang Jaran: Teja Darmaning Kauripan" as a medium for preserving traditional arts? This research is a qualitative descriptive study using observation and interview data collection methods. Data analysis in this study used the Milles interactive model procedure with three stages of data analysis, namely (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) verification or drawing conclusions. The result of this study is that the use of this film as a medium for preserving traditional arts can be seen from two elements, namely the first element is the visual element which includes the proactive observationalism and reactive observationalism, and the second element is verbal testimony.
