ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

AbstractThis research analyzed the perception of Makassar’s teenagers toward Korean drama and music and their influences to them. Interviews and digital recorder were provided as instruments of the research to ten respondents who are members of Makassar Korean Lover Community. Then, in analyzing data the researchers used descriptive qualitative method that aimed to get deep information about Korean wave in Makassar. The Results of the study found that Makassar’s teenagers put enormous interest in Korean culture especially Korean drama and music. However, most respondents also realize that the presence of Korean culture has a great negative impact to them and their environments. Korean culture itself gives effect in several aspects such as the influence on behavior, Influence on the taste and Influence on the environment as well. AbstrakPersepsi Remaja Makassar terhadap Drama dan Musik Korea (Studi Kasus pada Komunitas Pecinta Korea di Makassar). Penelitian ini mengkaji persepsi remaja di kota Makassar terhadap drama dan musik Korea serta pengaruhnya terhadap remaja tersebut. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah interview melalui alat perekam kepada (10) sepuluh responden yang tergabung dalam Komunitas Pencinta Korea kota Makassar. Dalam penelitian ini, digunakan metode deskrptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh informasi lengkap tentang pengaruh budaya Korea di kota Makassar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa remaja di Kota Makassar menaruh perhatian yang sangat besar terhadap budaya Korea khususnya drama dan musik Korea. Tetapi, hampir semua responden berpendapat bahwa kehadiran budaya Korea membawa dampak negatif terhadap mereka dan lingkungannya. Budaya Korea juga berpengaruh besar terhadap kebiasaan/tingkah laku remaja, kecenderungan menyukai dan menggunakan produk-produk Korea dan berpengaruh terhadap lingkungan remaja Makassar.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aims to find out kinds of learning strategies dominantly used by the students of English and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar under cumlaude (3.76-4.00) GPA. This research is important to know, especially for the students in foreign language major, because learning strategies has function as the way to improve language achievement and students ability in applying foreign language. The researcher uses a descriptive method in analyzing the data. The researcher states the result of data analysis by describing them through percentage and explanation. The researcher uses questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. Referring to the finding and discussion of this research, the result shows that from three kinds of learning strategies: 1. Metacognitive learning strategies, 2. Cognitive learning strategies, 3. Socioaffective learning strategies proposed by O’Malley et al, the highest learning strategies used by the students of English and Literature Department of Adab and Humanities Faculty of UIN Alauddin Makassar who have cumlaude (3.76-4.00) GPA is socioaffective learning strategies, the second is cognitive learning strategies, and the last is metacognitive learning strategies. So, the writer concludes that learning strategies that dominantly used by students of English and Literature Department of Adab and Humanities Faculty of UIN Alauddin Makassar who have cumlaude (3.76-4.00) GPA is socioaffective learning strategies.

Abstract

AbstractThis jurnal studied about racial injustice in 12 Years a Slave movie. This research is to find out the kinds and impacts of racial injustice in 12 Years a Slave movie. This research used descriptive qualitative and used theories of Paradies et al. and Liliweri to analysis the kinds of racial injustice and used theory of Utsey et al. to analysis the impacts of racial injustice. The data collections of this research are script and film 12 Years a Slave movie, which is released in 2013. In collecting data, the writer used note taking as the instrument to find out the kinds and impacts of racial injustice in these movies. In this research, the writer found out that there are twenty-eight data of kinds racial injustice which is divided into five, they were; prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, violence, segregation and seven data of impacts of racial injustice, which is divided into three, they were; racism-related trauma, racism-related stress and distress, anticipatory racism reaction. In addition, the writer found that only violence kinds of racial injustice that had impact in these movie. Based on the findings and discussions, the writer concluded that racial injustice is the action of White people that threaten physical/mentally and unfair action that disadvantages to Black people.AbstrakRasisme dalam Film 12 Tahun menjadi budak. Jurnal ini belajar tentang ketidakadilan rasial dalam film 12 tahun menjadi budak budak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu jenis dan dampak dari ketidakadilan rasial film 12 tahun menjadi budak budak. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan teori Paradies et al. dan Liliweri untuk menganalisa jenis-jenis ketidakadilan rasial dan digunakan teori dari Utsey et al. analisis dampak ketidakadilan rasial. Dalam pengumpulan data berdasarkan pada manuskrip film 12 tahun menjadi budak budak, yang dirilis pada tahun 2013. Dalam pengumpulan data, penulis peneliti menggunakan note taking sebagai instrument. Hasilnya, peneliti menemukan bahwa terdapat 28 jenis ketidakadilan rasial yang dibagi ke dalam lima kategori yakni; prasangka, stereotip, diskriminasi, kekerasan, pemisahan. Sedangkan dampak ketidakadilan rasial, terbagi ke dalam tiga kategori, keduanya; rasisme yang berhubungan dengan trauma, rasisme yang berhubungan dengan stres dan tekanan, serta rasisme antisipatif reaksi. Olehnya itu, penulis menemukan bahwa kekerasan ketidakadilan rasial terdapat dalam film ini. Dari hasil temuan, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa ketidakadilan rasial adalah tindakan yang dilakukan oleh orang kulit putih yang mengancam fisik/mental dan tindakan yang tidak adil dengan menindas orang kulit hitam.

Abstract

AbstractThis research was correlational research. The population consisted of the First Year of Nursing Department at SMK Darussalam Makassar with two classes of Nursing Department as sample. This research employed two kinds of instruments for collecting data. Data on students’ intelligence and their visual material comprehension were analyzed in percentage by using descriptive statistics persons’ product moment correlation and SPSS ver 15.0 for windows to find out whether or not there was correlation between the intelligence level and the ability to comprehend visual materials of SMK Darussalam Makassar. The result of the research showed that there was a significant correlation between the intelligence level and the ability to comprehend visual materials of SMK Darussalam Makassar, as the students categorized into positive category, students comprehension classified into good classification.  However, the data shows that the correlation between the intelligence level and the ability to comprehend visual materials exists. It was proved by the result of correlation analysis showing that score of r test was greater than r table value. Therefore, it can be interpreted that the research hypothesis is accepted.AbstractPenelitian ini merupakan penelitian korelasional.Populasi dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari siswa kelas satu Jurusan Keperawatan di SMK Darussalam Makassar.Sampel terdiri dari dua kelas jurusan Keperawatan.Penelitian ini menggunakan dua jenis instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data.Data kecerdasan siswa dan pemahaman materi visual mereka dianalisis dalam persentase dengan menggunakan statistik deskriptif korelasi product moment dan SPSS ver 15.0 for windows untuk mengetahui apakah ada atau tidak hubungan antara Tingkat Kecerdasan dan Kemampuan untuk Memahami Materi Visual SMK Darussalam Makassar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan yang signifikan antara Tingkat Kecerdasan dan Kemampuan untuk Memahami Materi Visual siswa SMK Darussalam Makassardikategorikan positif serta pemahaman mereka diklasifikasikan baik. Namun, data menunjukkan bahwa korelasi antara Tingkat Kecerdasan dan Kemampuan untuk Memahami materi Visual ada meskipun posisi moderat.Hal ini terbukti dari hasil analisis korelasi menunjukkan bahwa skor tes-r lebih besar dari nilai tabel-r.Oleh karena itu dapat diartikan bahwa hipotesis penelitian diterima.

Abstract

Abstract The objectives of this research were to find out the kinds of polite expressions used  by  teachers  in  teaching  English  in  the  classroom  and  effects  of  polite expressions  used  by  teachers  to  students.  The researcher applied descriptive qualitative research and used purposive sampling in getting the data. The subject of this research was one English teacher of SMP 24 Makassar.  The researcher did classroom observation by recording the teacher’s activities and analyzed it through Brown  and  Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies. The researcher found  that  some  polite  expressions  of  strategies  that  the  teacher  used is divided  into  two  types.  First,  Positive  Politeness  (PP) such as  greetings, notice and attend the  hearer, exaggerate, intensify interest of hearer, use in-group identity makers, seeking agreement,  presuppose/  raise/  assert  common  ground,  include  both  speaker and  hearer  in  the  activity,  giving  or  asking  reasons,  assume  or  assert reciprocity and giving gifts to hearer (goods, sympathy); and Negative Politeness (NP)  such  as  Being conventionally indirect, Questions, Minimize the imposition, Giving deference, Apologize,  Nominalize.  The effects to students are:  being motivated in their study, student’s attitude (affective), respect to teacher, self-confidence, being active and attending in teaching learning process, and honest.Abstrak Ekspresi Kesopanan yang Digunakan oleh Guru dalam Mengajar Bahasa Inggris di Kelas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris di kelas dan efek dari ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh guru kepada siswa. Ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang menggunakan purposive sampling untuk mendapatkan data. Subjek penelitian ini adalah salah seorang guru Bahasa Inggris SMP 24 Makassar. Peneliti melakukan observasi kelas dengan merekam aktivitas guru dan dianalisis meggunakan teori strategi kesantunan Brown dan Levinson. Peneliti menemukan bahwa ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan guru dibagi menjadi dua jenis. Pertama, Kesopanan Positif (KP) seperti salam, pemberitahuan dan menyapa pendengar, membesar-besarkan, mengintensifkan kepentingan pendengar, gunakan pembuat identitas dalam kelompok, mencari kesepakatan, mengandaikan / angkat / menegaskan, mengikutsertakan pembicara dan pendengar dalam kegiatan, memberi atau meminta alasan, mengasumsikan atau menegaskan timbal balik dan memberikan hadiah kepada pendengar (barang, simpati); dan kesopanan negatif (np) seperti menjadi konvensional tidak langsung, pertanyaan, minimalkan pembebanan, memberikan rasa hormat, minta maaf, nominalize. Efek untuk siswa: termotivasi dalam pelajaran mereka, sikap siswa (afektif), sehubungan dengan guru, kepercayaan diri, aktif dan menghadiri proses belajar mengajar, serta jujur.

Abstract

Abstract This research is about inter-cultural non-verbal communication strategies in Indonesian and Thailand students’ interaction which is included in the Kinesics of Novinger’s theory. The objectives of research are finding out the description of the kinds of non-verbal communication strategies used among students and the ways of non-verbal communication to the students. This research applies descriptive quantitative method. The research instruments are documentation and questionnaire. The data analysis showed that there were 39 kinds of non-verbal communication. There were 16 kinds of Gestures, 6 kinds of Eye Contact, 7 kinds of Facial Expressions, 6 kinds of Touch, and 4 kinds of Posture. The result of descriptive analysis showed the rate percentage of non-verbal communication strategies that have big roles in communication between Indonesian and Thailand students were 90% gesture and 10% eye contact. Abstract

AbstractThe best way to ensure readability of the content is by look out for principles in clear writing. In theory this means avoiding many long syllable words, unusual words, or long and awkward sentences.This study analyzed how readable is English written materials used for high school students and what factors do the readability of written language affect. To answer these, a descriptive quantitative research has been conducted and the English written materials taken as a subject. It is found that The Fog Index provides numerous benefits for many people include educators, librarians, publishers, and even students. Most importantly, it allows us to shape and edit our writing for a particular audience. AbstrakCara terbaik untuk memastikan keterbacaan isi buku adalah dengan melihat prinsip-prinsip dalam menulis.Dalam teori, ini berarti menghindari banyak kata yang panjang suku kata, kata-kata yang tidak biasa, atau kalimat yang panjang dan canggung. Studi ini menganalisis bagaimana keterbacaan materi tertulis bahasa Inggris yang digunakan oleh siswa SMA dan faktor-faktor apayang mempengaruhi keterbacaan materi. Untuk menjawab ini, penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif telah dilakukan dan materi tertulis bahasa Inggris diambil sebagai subjek.Hasil menunjukkan bahwa Fog Index memberikan pengaruh positif bagi banyak orang termasuk pendidik, pustakawan, penerbit, dan bahkan siswa dalam memahami materi tertulis bahasa Inggris. Yang paling penting, memungkinkan kita untuk membentuk dan mengedit tulisan kita untuk pembaca tertentu.

Abstract

ABSTRACTLearning vocabulary is difficult thing to remember, therefore, this writing tries to give solution that the learner should study the affixation process in English. There are two kinds of affixation, first, the bound morpheme comes after root is called suffix, and secod one, the bound morpheme comes before root is called prefix.  But if we expalion both of them look too broad, Therefore, the writer just focuses on prefix process in English relating with negative and positive prefixes. The examples of negative prefixes are un, in, im, dis, mis, ill, ir and anti, while positive ones such as re, out, super, under, multi and over.ABSTRAKPelajaran kosakata adalah hal yang sulit untuk diingat; oleh karena itu, tulisan ini mencoba memberikan solusi bahwa pelajar harus mempelajari proses afiksasi dalam bahasa Inggris. Ada dua jenis afiksasi; pertama, morfem terikat terdapat setelah root disebut suffix, dan kedua, morfem terikat berada terdapat root disebut prefix. Tetapi jika kita menjelaskan keduanya tampak terlalu luas, karena itu, penulis hanya berfokus pada proses awalan dalam bahasa Inggris yang berkaitan dengan prefiks negatif dan positif. Contoh-contoh dari prefiks negatif adalah un, di, im, dis, mis, ill, ir dan anti, sementara yang positif seperti re, out, super, under, multi dan over.

Abstract

AbstractListening and reading comprehension involve language specific processes as well as domain-general cognitive abilities – sensation, perception, attention, memory, and reasoning. In comprehending there is sentence processing. It takes place whenever a reader or listener processes a language utterance, either in isolation or in the context of a conversation or a text. This paper is about psychological barriers in receptive skills acquisition, namely listening comprehension and reading comprehension skills. It discussed some psychological barriers that faced by the children in comprehending a language. Those are comprehension disorder in aphasia, dyslexia, slow word level processing, insufficient experience, memory difficulties, mixed receptive-expressive language disorder, auditory processing disorder, and language anxiety. Therefore, it seems imperative for policy makers, planners, curriculum designers, pedagogues and administrators to consider learning barriers so that a proper diagnosis of the barriers, their types can be developed to minimize or remove such barriers.AbstrakHambatan Psikologis dalam Keterampilan Reseptif Akuisisi. Pemahaman mendengarkan dan membaca melibatkan proses bahasa tertentu serta domain-umum kemampuan kognitif - sensasi, persepsi, perhatian, memori, dan penalaran. Dalam memahami ada pengolahan kalimat. Hal ini terjadi ketika pembaca atau pendengar memproses bahasa, baik dalam isolasi atau dalam konteks percakapan atau teks. Tulisan ini adalah tentang hambatan psikologis dalam pemerolehan keterampilan reseptif, yaitu pemahaman mendengarkan dan pemahaman membaca. Beberapa hambatan psikologis yang dihadapi oleh anak-anak dalam memahami bahasa dibahasa dalam tulisan ini. Hamabatan psikologis yang dihadapi oleh anak-anak dalam memperoleh bahasa yaitu gangguan afasia, disleksia, pengolahan level kata yang lambat, pengalaman yang tidak cukup, kesulitan memori, gangguan campuran bahasa reseptif-ekspresif, gangguan proses pendengaran, dan kecemasan bahasa. Oleh karena itu, penting bagi para pembuat kebijakan, perencana, desainer kurikulum, pendidik dan administrator untuk mempertimbangkan hambatan belajar sehingga diagnosa yang tepat dari hambatan dapat dikembangkan untuk meminimalkan atau menghilangkan hambatan tersebut.

Abstract

Abstract In this article, the writer aimed to find out how the culture shapes character. The library research was used as the design of this study with the sources from personal and online library. The process of collecting the data is in many ways, the first was searching thesis and browsing some literatures. The other sources were books, articles and journals which have the same variable. Collecting and combining some theories was the last step. The result of this research is culture is one of many factors that influence a person's character. Culture affects perception, and perceptions drives behavior. Thus, the culture has a direct impact on our character. Moreover, our environment, which has cultural influences, shapes our character. AbstrakDalam artikel ini penulis bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana budaya membentuk karakter. Penelitian perpustakaan digunakan sebagai desain penelitian ini dengan sumber dari perpustakaan pribadi dan online. Proses pengumpulan data dalam banyak hal, yang pertama mencari tesis dan mecari beberapa literatur. Sumber lainnya adalah buku, artikel dan jurnal yang memiliki variabel yang sama. Mengumpulkan dan menggabungkan beberapa teori adalah langkah terakhir. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah Budaya adalah salah satu dari banyak faktor yang mempengaruhi karakter seseorang. Budaya mempengaruhi persepsi, dan persepsi mendorong perilaku. Dengan demikian, budaya memiliki dampak langsung pada karakter kita. Selain itu, lingkungan kita, yang memiliki pengaruh budaya, membentuk karakter kita.
