ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper analyzes American dream in the twenties with happiness as its last goal. American dream motivated people to come to America for prosperous and better life. It became promise land that could change everything better including from rags to riches. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is one of the novels that involved entrepreneurship which is one of the American Dream path ways in gaining success and happiness. It also contents F. Scott Fitzgerald’s critical view on the impressive prosperity and the growth of business owners in America in the era of industrialization in the twenties and the seriously occurred of corruption, crime, cheating, stealing and violence as their ways in running their businesses that decline the moral and spiritual of the dreamers. This paper depicts the phenomenon in America in the twenties that had more business owners who run their businesses with various purposes including gaining love, wealth, success and fame.  INTISARITulisan ini menganalisis Impian Amerika di tahun sembilan belas dua puluhan dengan kebahagiaan sebagai tujuan terakhir. Falsafah Impian Amerika mendorong orang datang ke Amerika untuk hidup makmur dan lebih baik. Amerika adalah tanah  menjanjikan yang bisa mengubah segalanya menjadi lebih baik termasuk dari miskin papah menjadi kaya raya. F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby adalah salah satu novel yang melibatkan kewirausahaan yang merupakan salah satu jalan untuk mewujudkan American Dream (Impian Amerika) dalam memperoleh kesuksesan dan kebahagiaan. Tulisan ini juga berisi tentang pandangan kritis F. Scott Fitzgerald pada kemakmuran yang  luar biasa dan bertambahnya pemilik bisnis di Amerika di masa industrialisasi pada tahun dua puluhan dan  terjadinya  korupsi, kejahatan, kecurangan, pencurian dan kekerasan yang cukup serius sebagai cara mereka dalam menjalankan bisnis yang mengakibatkan turunnya kualitas moral dan spiritual para penduduk setempat. Tulisan ini menggambarkan fenomena masyarakat di Amerika di tahun sembilan belas duapuluhan dimana jumlah pemilik  bisnis bertambah dan memiliki tujuan berbeda-beda pula termasuk menjadikannya sebagai alat untuk merebut kembali cinta yang hilang, menjadi kaya raya, sukses dan tenar.

Abstract

AbstractThis writing is to identify the description and form of Puritanism, Romanticism and Reason found in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. Method used in this research is descriptive qualitative through library research with dynamic structuralism. Furthermore, the result expected is to find out description through Puritanism, Romanticism and Reason analysis on the three characters in The Scarlet Letter. Puritanism in The Scarlet Letter is showed by the society condition where people have pure transcendental relationship to the God. Romanticism is revealed by love relationship, individual freedom, passionate and happiness that related to overwhelming feeling. Abstract

AbstractWashington Irving describes the Supernaturalism in Tales of a Traveler. He is one of the earliest American writer of Imaginative literature in the age of Romanticism and it happened of France Revolution that fulfilled by the enthusiasm and liberty. This research is going to find some words to indicate the supernatural element in romantic era. Based on the previous explanation, the writer formulates the problems as follow: 1) Why Washington Irving as the Romantic writer does write the supernatural elements in his essays and 2) What are the words to indicate of supernatural elements in his essays. The analysis finds out that the supernatural gothic and symbol that he described in Tales of a Traveler is one of satire or criticize of the condition in his era, that happened French revolution and there are many conflict in Europe that make people want move to the new place. Therefore, we can call by the transition era. The mysticism is one of characteristic of the romantic era, so the mysticism close meaning with the supernatural that the extra of natural. Irving made satire as criticize of the condition that filled any conflict in Europe after French revolution to make people individualistic.AbstrakThe Supernatural Elements Reflected in Washington Irving’s Tales of A Traveler. Washington Irving menggambarkan hal-hal yang berhubungan dengan dunia supernatural di dalam karyanya yang berjudul Tales of Traveler. Dia termasuk penulis pertama Amerika yang sastranya imaginatif pada Era Romantis yang terjadi pada saat revolusi Ferancis yang ditandai dengan anthusiasme dan kebebasan. Berdasarkan penjelasan ini maka dapat dirumuskan dua pertanyaan yaitu: 1) mengapa Irving di dalam karyanya pada era romantis ini menulis tentang supernatural pada karyanya 2) Apa saja perkataan Irving yang menunjukan hal-hal supernatural dalam karyanya. Maka analisis ini menemukan bahwa supernatural gothic dan symbol yang tergambar didalam Tale of Traveler adalah salah satu sindiran atau keritikan terhadap kondisi yang terjadi pada era revolusi Perancis. Terjadi banyak konflik di Eropa yang membuat orang ingin pindah tempat yang baru. Oleh karena itu disebut dengan era transisi. Karya yang berbau mistik merupakan salah satu karakteristik pada era romantis ini, mistik dekat maknanya dengan supernatural yang berhubungan dengan di luar hal alami. Irving menyindir dan mengkritik terhadap konflik yang terjadi di Eropa pasca revolusi perancis yang membuat orang lebih individualistik.

Abstract

Abstract The Analysis of Syntactical Errors Made by the Students in Writing Thesis aimed to find out the types of syntactical errors made by the students in writing thesis and to find out the most frequent type of errors made by the students in writing thesis. The writer used Politzer and Romirez’s theory focusing on the Syntactical errors. This study found the errors made by students were in the term of noun phrase, verb, verb construction, and transformation. Then, the most frequent error found was in the noun phrase term with 48.7%. The researcher suggests the English teachers to give reinforcement for the students about the basic rules of constructing sentences.Abstrak Analisa Kesalahan Sintaksis oleh Mahasiswa dalam Penulisan Skripsi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh jenis kesalahan sintaksis yang dilakukan oleh siswa dalam menulis skripsi dan kesalahan sintaksis yang paling sering dilakukan. Penulis menggunakan teori Politzer dan Romirez mengenai kesalahan sintaksis. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa kesalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa adalah pada noun phrase, verb, verb construction, and transformation. Jenis kesalahan yang paling sering dilakukan adalah pada noun phrase (47.8%). Penulis menyarankan dosen bahasa Inggris untuk memberikan penguatan pada mahasiswa mengenai aturan dasar mengenai constructing sentences.

Abstract

AbstractThe differences in cultural backgrounds influence the content of literary works, despite the same theme addressed. The purpose of the research is to compare and contrast an American novel Eat Pray Love (EPL) and Indonesian Pada Sebuah Kapal (PSK) for differences and similarities in the sense of how different cultures influence the heroine in each novel in her pursuit of happiness.  For that purpose, a thematic, descriptive, and comparative analysis is conducted to answer two research problems: 1) what constraint each heroine has to face in her attempts to achieve happiness; and 2) how the novel reflects the different ways in which American and Indonesian values concerning women influence the heroine of each novel. The analysis finds out that the heroine in each novel faces the same marital problem. Both are unhappy in their marriages, but they deal with their problem in different ways. In EPL, the heroine attempts individual redefinition of the self by undergoing material and spiritual search and fulfillment, and finally managed to achieve her true happiness. American individualism allows this. In PSK, the heroine undergoes an internal conflict, attempts for her happiness by committing extramarital relationship but fails to redefine herself and returns to her abusive husband and unhappy marriage. Traditional Javanese norms she strongly believes in do not allow her to strive for her happiness in an ‘unlawful’ way. Different cultures and different eras have their own articulation in literary work. American individualism gives greater priority to individuals, whereas Indonesian communality puts individual after social’s interests.IntisariLatar belakang budaya yang berbeda mempengaruhi dalam perkembangan karya sastra walaupun temanya sama. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membandingkan novel Amerika Eat Pray Love (EPL) dan novel Indonesia Pada Sebuah Kapal (PSK) untuk mencari persamaan dan perbedaan di antara keduanya dengan melihat bagaimana perbedaan budaya tersebut mempengaruhi kedua tokoh wanita di dalam masing-masing novel dalam upaya mereka mencapai kebahagiaan sejati. Analisis tematik dan deskriptif dalam kerangka studi perbandingan sastra digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan sebagai berikut: 1) hambatan apa yang dihadapi oleh kedua tokoh wanita tersebut untuk mencapai kebahagiaan; 2) bagaimana kedua novel tersebut menggambarkan perbedaan antara nilai-nilai budaya dan masyarakat Amerika dan Indonesia dalam kaitannya dengan perempuan mempengaruhi perilaku tokoh utama wanita di masing-masing novel tersebut dalam upaya mereka mencari kebahagiaan sejati.  Penelitian menemukan bahwa tokoh wanita pada masing-masing novel menghadapi masalah yang sama dalam perkawinan mereka masing-masing. Kedua tokoh wanita ini tidak bahagia dalam perkawinannya. Pada EPL, tokoh wanita ini berusaha mendefinisikan kembali dirinya melalui sebuah proses pencarian jati diri secara material dan spiritual dan hingga akhirnya kebahagiaan sejati. Individualisme dalam masyarakat Amerika memungkinkan hal ini. Pada PSK, tokoh wanita ini menghadapi konflik bathin, berusaha mencapai kebahagiaan dengan melakukan hubungan di luar nikah tetapi gagal mendefinisikan kembali jati dirinya dan kembali kepada suaminya dan penikahannya tidak bahagia. Norma tradisional budaya Jawa yang dipegangnya dengan teguh tidak membenarkannya mencapai kebahagiaan dengan cara yang ’tidak benar’. Individualism Amerika memberikan prioritas terbesar untuk setiap individu, komunalitas masyarakat dan budaya Indonesia menempatkan kepentingan individual setelah kepentingan sosial.

Abstract

Abstract This study was intended to improve the students’ ability in speaking through ICARE model at the third semester students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research employed Classroom Action Research consisting of two cycles where each cycle consisted of four meetings. The instrument used in this research was speaking test. The data obtained from the test in the end of each cycle was analyzed quantitatively. The findings showed that there was significant improvement on the students’ speaking ability in terms of accuracy and fluency in which the mean score of diagnostic test was 5.17, the mean score of cycle I was 6.06 and the mean score of cycle II was 7.21. AbstrakPenelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara melalui model ICARE mahasiswa semester III Departemen bahasa Inggris di Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang terdiri dari dua siklus yang mana setiap siklus terdiri dari empat pertemuan. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Tes speaking. Data yang Diperoleh dari tes di akhir setiap siklus dianalisis secara kuantitatif. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada kemampuan berbahasa siswa dalam hal ketepatan dan kelancaran di mana nilai rata-rata tes diagnostik adalah 5.17, Skor rata-rata pada siklus I adalah 6.06 dan skor rata rata pada siklus II adalah 7.21.

Abstract

AbstractChildren's  literature  is  defined as  literature  exclusively about  children.  Children's  literature  refers  mainly  to  stories,  poetry, rhymes,  folk  tales,  drama,  exclusively  created  for  children  such  as infants, toddlers and the young people as target audience. Literature for children is different from literature for adults in degree but not in kind. Because children’s understanding is more limited, the expression of ideas for children in literature must be simpler, both in language and form.AbstrakSastra anak adalah bentuk karya sastra yang khusus diciptakan untuk konsumsi anak-anak.Bentuk-bentuknya antara lain berupa cerita, puisi, cerita rakyat dan drama yang secara khusus diciptakan untuk anak-anak, balita dan remaja sebagai target audiencenya.Bentuk sastra anak pada dasarnya sama saja dengan sastra dewasa, hanya saja keduanya berbeda dari segi tingkatan dan muatannya.Hal ini disebabkan karena tingkat pemikiran anak-anak masih terbatas dibandingkan orang dewasa.Oleh karena itu, pengungkapan ide pada sastra anak haruslah lebih sederhana, baik dalam bentuk dan bahasa.

Abstract

Abstract This article aims to describe the types of illocutionary acts of main character in “Midnight in Paris” movie. It also aims to describe the type of illocutionary acts which is mostly used by the main character. It is a content analysis where the source of data is the “Midnight in Paris” movie directed by Woody Allen in 2011 which consisted of 245 utterances. The data are in the form of   main character’s 44 utterances and categorized into types of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s theory. Based on data analysis, the finding shows five types of illocutionary acts in main character’s utterances, namely assertive, directive, commissive, declarative and expressive. Assertive is mostly used by the main character. Key words: illocutionary acts, utterances, pragmatics, Midnight in Paris movie Abstrak Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran tentang jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi dari tokoh utama dalam film “Midnight in Paris” yang disutradarai oleh Woody Allen pada tahun 2011. Artikel ini juga menggambarkan jenis tindak ilokusi yang palingt banyak digunakan oleh tokoh utama. Dengan menggunakan analisis isi,data yang berupa 44 ujaran yang diungkapkan oleh tokoh utama dikategorikan ke dalam jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Searle. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima jenis tindak ilokusi dari tokoh utama film tersebut, yaitu assertive, directive, commissive, declarative dan expressive. Assertive merupakan tindak ilokusi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh tokoh utama.  Kata kunci: tindak ilokusi, ujaran, pragmatic, film Midnight in Paris

Abstract

ABSTRACT              This thesis studied about the analysis of emotive function in Kelley Armstrong’s novel “The Reckoning”. The thesis aims to find out and to explain the emotive function performed by the main character in the novel. The writer used descriptive qualitative method to describe and explain  the emotive function in the novel. The instrument which is used by the writer was note-taking. Along this instrument, the writer read the novel, then taking seven colors of cards to write the emotive function on the novel, after that the expression is written down and classified the emotive function from the novel. In spite of,  the writer analyzed the data by using Roman Jakobson’s theory. Through this analysis, the writer found seven kinds of emotive function; those were displeasure that have 5 expressions or 4,351%, displeasure that have 3 expressions or 2,366 %, like that have 2 expressions or 1,386%, dislike that have 7 expressions or 6,346%, worry that have 8 expressions or 7,344%, desire that have 3 expressions or 2,366%, and gratitude that have 3 expressions or 2,366%. The emotive function mostly used in the conversations on the novel was the expressions of worry. Furthermore, one expression thatis  used by the main character may have more than one function of emotive based on the context.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed at finding out how the community language learning improves speaking ability and how does the community language learning enhances the interest of students to speak English in speaking class. This research applied quasi-experimental method. The research data were collected through speaking test and questionnaire. The speaking test was given in the form of interview to know the students’ achievement on speaking ability and the questionnaire was to know the students’ interest toward community language learning in speaking class. The findings on speaking ability of the participants were analyzed by using independent sample t-test and the students’ interest was analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The study concluded that: (1) Community Language Learning improve the first semester students of SMP Negeri 19 Makassar to speak English significantly better than conventional method, and (2) the participants were highly interested in speaking English by community language learning.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan: (1) untuk menemukan apakah penggunaan community language learning dapat mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara siswa daripada metode lama, (2) dan apakah penggunaan community language learning menigkatkan minat siswa. Metode penelitian ini menerapkan quasi experimental. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan mengunakan dua Instrumen;  Tes speaking dan angket (skala likert). Tes speaking diberikan dalam bentuk wawancara untuk mengetahui prestasi siswa pada kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris dan angket unutk mengetahui minat siswa terhadap penggunaan community language learning. Hasil tes speaking dianalisa dengan menggunakan Independent sample t-test dan minat siswa dianalisa dengan menggunakan deskriptif statistic, hasil means score dari minat siswa 81.35.   Kajian ini menyimpulkan bahwa (1) penggunaan community language learning mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara siswa secara significant lebih baik daripada metode biasa, (2) penggunaan community language learning meningkatkan minat siswa dalam berbicara menggunakan bahasa Inggris.
