Abstract

Fusion-bonded epoxy-coated steel is expected to extend the service life of the reinforced concrete structure in chloride-laden environments. However, the effect of coating on the bond-strength between rebar and concrete is not well understood yet. This research, therefore, studied the effect of epoxy-coating on the bond characteristics of reinforcing bars in concrete. The bond characteristics were assessed through pullout test considering variables viz. concrete strength, embedded length and bar diameter. The load was applied to reinforcing bars embedded in concrete until bond strength between the bar and concrete exceeded. Bond strength of epoxy-coated bars was compared with that of the uncoated bars. It was found that epoxy-coating reduced the bond strength approximately 25% for Ø20mm bar and 12% for Ø16mm and Ø12mm bar. As with uncoated bar, bond strength of coated bars were also increased with concrete strength. However, the bond strength ratio between coated and uncoated bars was found almost independent of concrete strength. Based on the test results, a development length modification factor of 1.33 is proposed for Ø20mm bar and 1.15 for Ø12mm and Ø16mm bar to compensate the bond strength reduction due to the epoxy coating.

Abstract

In order to use material efficiently, non-prismatic column sections are frequently employed. Tapered-web column cross-sections are commonly used, and design guides of such sections are available. In this study, various web-and-flange-tapered column sections were analysed numerically using finite element method to obtain each buckling load assuming the material as elastic-perfectly plastic material. For each non-prismatic column, the analysis was also performed assuming the column is prismatic using average cross-section with the same length and boundary conditions. Buckling load of the prismatic columns were obtained using equation provided by AISC 360-16. This study proposes a multiplier that can be applied to the buckling load of a prismatic column with an average cross-section to acquire the buckling load of the corresponding non-prismatic column. The multiplier proposed in this study depends on three variables, namely the depth tapered ratio, width tapered ratio, and slenderness ratio of the prismatic section. The equation that uses those three variables to obtain the multiplier is obtained using regression of the finite element results with a coefficient of determination of 0.96.

Abstract

The connection system is a critical part of Timber – Concrete Composite (TCC) floor structures. The behaviour of the connection needs to be known to predict the behaviour of composite structure accurately. Screws are one kind of connector that mostly used in the composite structure due to its installation ease and high withdrawal strength. This study carried out a two-dimensional numerical simulation to examine the behaviour of LVL Sengon-concrete joint using OpenSees software. The lag screw used to connect LVL Sengon and concrete. In this simulation, the screw was assumed as a beam with hinges element that supported by a set of springs representing the strength of LVL Sengon and concrete. Some input parameters for this simulation were obtained from the material test and previous research. The effect of secondary axial force was considered into the load-displacement curve resulted from the numerical simulation.  This study performed several simulations towards the variation of the screw diameter, penetration depth, and concrete compressive strength. The capacity of the connections resulted from the numerical simulation were overestimates the manual calculation using EYM theory and NDS 2018 equations. The capacity of the connection increased about 146% to 284% due to the addition of secondary axial forces. In addition, this simulation can adequately predict the shear force, bending moment, and deformation of the screw. There is a plastic hinge formed in the screw after the screw being deformed a quite large.  It shows the same yield mode with the manual calculation using EYM theory and NDS 2018 equations. This simulation also can show the contribution of each spring elements to resist the load until its ultimate strength.

Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) and silica fume (SF) are the by-products of the oil palm plantation and the ferroalloy smelting industries, respectively. Improper disposal of these materials leads to negative implication to the environment. This study was carried out to investigate the potential application of EFB and SF in cement bricks. EFB fibre and SF replaced up to 25% of sand and cement in the mix, respectively, in several groups of specimens that distinguished the normal, EFB-, SF- and EFB-SF-cement bricks. The specimens were tested for the compressive strength, density and water absorption property. The results reveal that SF, at an optimum amount of 10% cement replacement, increased 10% of the strength of the cement brick. EFB fibre reduced the strength and density but increased water absorption property of the cement brick. For application in the construction industry, SF and EFB fibre contents should be kept within 10% and 20% respectively.

Abstract

X-band radar gives several advantages for quantitative rainfall estimation, involving higher spatial and temporal resolution, also the ability to reduce attenuation effects and hardware calibration errors. However, the estimates error due to attenuation in heavy rainfall condition cannot be avoided. In the mountainous region, the impact of topography is considered to contribute to radar rainfall estimates error. To have more reliable estimated radar rainfall to be used in various applications, a rainfall estimates correction needs to be applied. This paper discusses evaluation and correction techniques for radar rainfall estimates based on ground elevation function. The G/R ratio is used as a primary method in the correction process. The novel approach proposed in this study is the use of correction factor derived from the relationship between Log (G/R) parameter and elevation difference between radar and rain gauge stations. A total of 4590 pairs of rainfall data from X-band MP radar and 15 rain gauge stations in the Mt. Merapi region were used in evaluation and correction process. The results show the correction method based on the elevation function is relatively good in correcting radar rainfall depth with values of Log (G/R) decreased up to 81.1%, particularly for light rainfall (≤ 20 mm/hour) condition. Also, the method is simple to apply in a real-time system.

Abstract

Due to the increased population, accessibility from one place to another, and effort to support economic growth, the Indonesian Central Government plans to build 71 kilometers of Yogyakarta-Bawen Toll Road. It is, however, important to state that the technical requirements of a connecting road are an integral part of the toll road construction. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the sufficient length for the connecting road between the toll gate and existing one to reduce the investment of Toll Road Business Entity and ensure a more extended return period of concession. The data used include the vehicle speed and daily traffic on the road while the maximum length value of vehicle queue occurring in the peak hour period and interval for each type of toll gate was calculated in the modeling simulation. The results showed the satellite gate with 4 lines has 159 meters, tandem with 2 lines has 434 meters, and extending with 3 lines has 513 meters. Since all the gates have less than 2 kilometers of queue length, the stretch of the connecting road in each toll of the plan needs to be analyzed to ensure effective development

Abstract

Rotiklot dam is located in Belu Regency that has the tropic climate, with very short wet season (4-5 months) and a very long dry season (7-8 months). The average monthly rainfall in December – April of approximately 300 – 500 mm/month, while in another month only ranges 30- 60 mm/month. During the rainy season, rainwater will overflow as surface water and collect in the river as a flood toward the sea. The construction of a dam is one alternative to overcome the water needs of the community during the dry season. The Rotiklot dam retains the flow of water in the Motamuru River and its reservoir can accommodate 2.9 million m3. Impounding is a process carried out once a dam has been constructed. It is a comprehensive process involving filling time and water inflow. The purpose of this study was to determine the first filling time and the inflow volume in Rotiklot Reservoir in the years of dry, low, normal and sufficient water using the Tank method. It aimed to simulate the initial filling of the reservoir.  Also, the study is expected to evaluate the most suitable Tank model, with parameters calibrated using the Genetic Algorithm optimization approach. The determination coefficient using a four series tank is 0.531 greater than the coefficient obtained from 3 series tank simulation, which was 0.506. The total inflow volume in Rotiklot Reservoir for dry, low, normal and sufficient were 1.946, 7.289, 9.699, 13.822 million m3 respectively. Based on the calculation result of the inflow volume of the year of the low water, the filling time is around three months, starting from mid-December to mid-March.

Abstract

Apartment construction is mostly carried out by including deep excavation works. However, excavation causes land instability; hence, the work needs to be done by a particular handler. In some cases, deep excavation is carried out on soft soil, which has a very high level of soil instability; therefore, a specific handling method such as ground anchor is required as an alternative. This study aims to conduct parametric research on the effect of using anchors on the stability of deep excavation. First, anchors of various slopes were modelled while varying the number of anchors up to four pieces. From the results of the study, the requirements representing the most efficient use of anchors were selected, and then various anchor bond lengths were modelled. Finally, the effect of applying various magnitudes of prestress forces to the anchor was determined. All of the models were examined to determine the influence on the stability of the deep excavation by observing the horizontal displacement and the forces that occur on the secant pile. From the analysis results, it can be concluded that the most effective slope angle is 0°. The displacement and forces occurred in the secant piles on the use of two, three, or four anchors has not a significant difference. The application of a higher prestress force on the anchor would yield better results as long as it is not exceeding 200 kN. However, in the case of an apartment building’s plans in Surabaya, the optimal anchor usage was found to be the use of two anchors with a 45° slope, 4.5 m for the first (A) and second (B) anchor bond lengths, 15 m free length anchor, 2.5 m vertical anchor distance, 1.2 m horizontal anchor distance, and the application of 200 kN prestress force.

Abstract

Coal Bottom Ash (CBA) is a mineral by-product of thermal power plants obtained from the combustion of coal. In many countries, CBA wastes are identified as hazardous materials. The utilization of CBA can help in alleviating environmental problems; thus, this research was carried out to explore the possibility of its use as cement replacement in concrete manufacturing. Presently, In Malaysia, research that concerns about the use of CBA as cement replacement is very limited. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the properties of CBA as cement replacement and to identify the optimum percentage of untreated CBA as cement replacement. The CBA used in this study were taken from the Tanjung Bin power plant. In this research, the amount of CBA in the concrete mixture varied from 20% to 40% to replace cement. The properties of concrete containing CBA as cement replacement was examined through slump test, sieve analysis, concrete compressive strength test and splitting tensile strength test. The compressive strength test and splitting tensile strength test were performed at 7 and 28 days of curing time. Based on this research, it can be concluded that the optimum percentage of CBA as cement replacement is 25% for a curing time of both 7 and 28 days with the concrete compression strength of 45.2 MPa and 54.6 MPa, respectively. Besides, the optimum percentage for tensile strength is also at 25% CBA for a curing period of both 7 and 28 days with the tensile strength of 2.91 MPa and 3.28 MPa, respectively.

Abstract

Connectivity between transportation nodes is crucial in encouraging the movement of people and goods, including access to Adi Soemarmo Airport. Currently, access to Adi Soemarmo Airport is dominated by private vehicles and taxis compared to public transportation such as buses which can be costly for some passengers. To cut the cost of transportation in Adi Soemarmo airport, the Ministry of Transportation has built railway access to Adi Soemarmo Airport from Solo Balapan Station and vice versa. However, the scheme of train’s tariff is solely designed to accommodate only operational and maintenance cost, while the ability and willingness of passengers to pay are simply neglected. This research aims to analyse willingness to pay of airplane passenger for the operation plan of airport train based on mode choice model and contingent valuation method and finally be able to determine the tariff based on willingness to pay and train operating costs. Mode choice model uses logit binomial in terms of differences with a stated preference method, willingness to pay analysis uses the net economic value from binomial logit and train operating cost calculations use the Minister of Transportation Regulation Number PM 17 the Year 2018. The average value of willingness to pay of prospective airport train users for each car, taxi and bus users based on binomial logit model is IDR14,802.42, IDR14,121.13, IDR14,221.42. Meanwhile, the value of the ability to pay for each car, taxi and bus users is IDR60,996.90, IDR79,564.67, IDR55,117.17 and the tariff value based on train operating costs is IDR17,730.22.
