Abstract

Research on the community structure of macrozoobenthos in the area of mangrove rehabilitation and mangrove naturally in Kampung Nipah Bedagai Serdang, North Sumatra was aim to determined the community structure of macrozoobenthos with the inventory and identification of the types of macrozoobenthos at the sites. The method used in this research is descriptive method by determining and manufacture of sampling points with purposive sampling method. The results showed that macrozoobenthos were found grouped in three classes of Bivalves, Gastropods, and Polychaeta with the total number of individuals as much as 775 individuals. Group class that has the number of families and the highest number of species are Gastropods (19 families and 29 species), followed by Bivalves (6 families and 13 species). Polychaeta only has one family and one spesies. Diversity index (H ) of the study sites showed a value of 2.37 with the medium category. Value uniformity among the sites is 0,63 which means that the distribution of individuals of each type tends to evenly at each station and observation points.

Abstract

Leaves of sangitan (Sambucus javanica Reinw) are often found but noticed. The leaf part of the sangitan plant is used to treat swelling, insecticides, antidiarrheal, antiinfectives, wounds, smoothing the skin as it contains flavonoid chemical compounds, glycosides, anthracton glycosides, saponins, steroids / triterpenoids and tannins. Screening results of ethanol extract of sour leaves (SambucusjavanicaReinw) contain alkaloid compounds, flavonoids, glikosida, antrakinon glycosides, saponins, steroids / triterpenoids and tannins. The extraction of sangitan leaves was done by maceration using 96% ethanol. Examination of antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of sangitan leaves was done in vitro by diffusion method of wells with concentrations of 500, 400, 300, 200 and 100 mg / ml. This study used cotrimosazole as a comparator and 96% ethanol as a negative control. The extract of ethanol leaves sangitan showed anti bacterial activity against bacteria Eschericia coli and Salmonella thypi at concentration 500 mg / ml respectively 16,11 mm and 17,04 mm which is classified strong but when compared with antibiotic cotrimosazole 10 mg / ml visible diameter of inhibit ethanol extract Leaves sangitan still much lower that is 30,35 mm in bacterium Eschericia coli and 33,15 mm in Salmonella thypi bacteria whereas ethanol extract do not show inhibitory power.

Abstract

Pteris vittata has a high morphological variation and it has wide geographic regions around the world . Study of morphology and its correlation with with altitude of plant origin area in Java is very little informed. This aims of this research were first to study the diversity of morphological characters of P. vittata from Java; and to know the correlations among morphological characters to the plant orignated altitute; This study was conducted from September 2012 until September 2013. Plants materials were  collected by exploration method.  Morphological observations carried out on 130 individuals that had been collected from West Java, Central of Java and Yogyakarta in various altitude areas. Pteris vittata from Java Island varied in the morphological characters. The varied in the morphological characters i.e. size and shape of fronds, pinnae and apical segment. Variations in morphology was not correlated with altitude of plant origin area. Taxonomycally, P. vittata in Java can be divided into two groups infraspecies, namely P.vittata subspecies vittata and P.vittata subspecies emodi.

Abstract

This reseach was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Eschericia coli from pandanus fragrant ethanol extract formulated in the form of hand gel antiseptic preparations. The ethanol extract was prepared by percolation using 96% ethanol solvent. Phytochemical screening is done on fragrant pandan leaves. Evaluation of hand antiseptic gel preparations included organoleptic testing, homogeneity testing, pH determination, spreading test, stability, irritation testing and antibacterial testing of Staphylococcus aureus and Eschericia coli. The results of phytochemical screening showed that the pandanus fragrant leaves contain alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids and polyphenols. The pandanus fragrant leaves ethanol extract can be formulated into hand gel antiseptic preparations because the pH is about 6.0-7.1, the spreading power is about 5.06-5.15 cm, stable for 12 weeks and organoleptically a formula with a very 2.5% concentration Favored and does not irritate the skin. The results of antibacterial activity test showed that the preparation with concentration of 10% had the strongest activity with the diameter of 13,23 mm to Staphylococcus aureus and 13,13% to Eschericia coli almost same with dettol stock on the market with diameter 16,43mm to Staphylococcus aureus and 16 , 03% against Eschericia coli.

Abstract

This research aims was to analyze the potential of activated charcoal leather cassava in the adsorption process linear compounds alkilbenzene sulfonate (LAS) contained in the liquid waste household detergents. Stages of the study consisted of charcoal formation process of the skin of cassava through the combustion process of pyrolysis, charcoal leather activation process cassava, and the compound adsorption process linear alkyl sulfonate (LAS) contained in the liquid waste household detergents. The results showed that activated charcoal is formed from leather waste cassava LAS have the ability to adsorb the compounds contained in domestic wastewater. Treatment optimum adsorption occurs at a concentration of activated charcoal leather cassava 4 grams and a contact time of 20 minutes.

Abstract

The research was carried out to observe the existence of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella in orange juice sold at setiabudi street, Medan. Descriptive analysis to 10 samples which examined in Balai Laboratorium Kesehatan, Medan showed that 3 of them contaminated by E.coli. The number of E.Coli found in the samples are above the standard issued by DEPKES RI 1991. Contamination by S. aureus and Salmonella were not found. Bacteria Total Plate Count value announced that there were some other species exist in the samples.

Abstract

Antimicrobial test was conducted on plant root extract som jawa (Talinum paniculatum, jacq. (Gaertn)). Five hundred gram simplicia of som jawa root was macerated using methanol and n-heksana, and coagulated. The screening of extract methanol and n-heksana was done to get metabolic secunder; flavonoid, alkaloid, terpenoid, and saponin. The result of phytochemistry secreening test to extract methanol to metabolic secunder was negative. Antimicrobial test result showed that the extract of som jawa root  is active againts microbes E.coli. Measurement is based on the test zone diameter of the clear zone generated, where . coli has the highest diameter of the clear zone compared with the others microbes such as Staphylococus aureus, Bacillus sp, Serratia sp, and Candida albicans. The values of the clear zone of each microbe  in order are 1,1 cm, 1 cm, 0,95cm, and 0,9 cm. These value were obtain at a concentration of 10%.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a respiratory disease that received special attention in the community. According to WHO more than 2 million people, one third of the total population in the world is infected by tuberculosis. Tuberculosis patients with malnutrition status have lower haemoglobin levels compared to patients with good nutritional status. The purpose of this reseach is to determine the relationship of body mass index (BMI) to the haemoglobin of patients pulmonary tuberculosis at the General Hospital Sultan Sulaiman Serdang Bedagai. This study was conducted descriptive of examination BMI and levels of haemoglobin in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis at the General Hospital Sultan Sulaiman Serdang Bedagai North Sumatra Province is to create the relationship between baseline BMI and BMI end after the OAT, as well as haemoglobin beginning and haemoglobin end after the OAT. The results showed that there was a weak correlation between baseline BMI of the initial haemoglobin levels with a value of r = 0.20. While the relationship between BMI end of the final haemoglobin levels after administration of OAT for 2 months there was a strong relationship r = 0.83.
