Abstract

Emergency remote teaching (ERE) triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to higher education institutions worldwide. Although it had several negative consequences, it also enabled advances in the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study was to examine and characterize the key elements of the process of returning to face-to-face courses. The study was based on a mixed quantitative and qualitative design. 631 students from Chile, Venezuela, and Colombia were surveyed about their experiences returning to face-to-face classes (in terms of virtual tools, their feelings, and their expectations for academic success). The survey also included questions about the lockdown caused by the pandemic, specifically regarding instructional and didactic design, participation in online sessions, and the role of faculty during the pandemic. Descriptive and correlative analyses were performed to examine relationships among variables. Qualitative data were analyzed within a hermeneutically-oriented framework. Our analyses show that virtual classrooms or learning management systems (LMS) continued to be used after the pandemic. However, their use is strongly associated with a more traditional approach to teaching; LMSs and virtual classrooms are primarily used as filing locations and for receiving and storing homework assignments and assessments. In terms of interaction, qualitative analyses have shown that relationships with faculty and between students are better in face-to-face classes and that there is not much difference in perceptions of collaborative work in online learning compared to face-to-face classes. Finally, students' expectations of academic success are low in the short term, while they are higher in the long term. Students also indicated that it is important to them that teachers take care about the didactic design of the course, including strategies that encourage interaction and participation in both synchronous and asynchronous sessions. In addition, students mentioned that teachers should incorporate strategies to promote academic motivation, self-regulation, and a safe environment. An important finding of this study is that students prefer a blended learning format when comparing online and face-to-face instruction. Abstract

Objectives: In education, neuroscience is an interdisciplinary research field. It seeks to improve educational practice by applying brain research findings. Additional findings from the scientific fields of education, psychology, and neurophysiology aim to enhance the learning process and improve educational practices. The application of neuroscience to education involves neuroscientific and psychological knowledge. Methods/Analysis: In this systematic literature review, the final studies included in the analysis table are decided by searching databases according to predefined inclusion criteria. The PRISMA approach was utilized to study the relationship between neuroscience and the educational process and to optimize the educational process based on the relevant data. Findings: The review's findings emphasize the significance of integrating neuroscience into educational praxis and challenges and raise ethical concerns regarding its implementation in educational contexts. Novelty /Improvement: The discipline of educational neuroscience is associated with education, research, and the cognitive neuroscience of learning. Neuroscience can serve as the basis for education in a similar direction that biology serves as the basis for medicine, meaning that each field retains its innovation but cannot contravene the rules of the other. Abstract

Introduction: Negative beliefs, fear, avoidance behaviors, and superficial attitudes surrounding the learning of statistics create significant problems for university students in Latin America. Objective: To analyze the impact of fearful behavior, superficial work, and avoidance displayed by university students when it comes to statistics. Method: In this article, we give details about a quantitative research project carried out by two independent studies. The first (N = 310) focused on the development of a scale to assess negative beliefs, fears, and avoidance behaviors towards statistics, in which goodness of fit was determined in a 3-factor model. In the second study (N = 250), it was hypothesized that undergraduates perform superficially due to negative beliefs and avoidance behaviors when learning statistics. Findings: The proposed model explained 42% of the variance. In addition, in the analysis of the proposed mediation model, an adequate adjustment was found. In the discussion of this research project, the need to intervene in the negative beliefs, fears, and avoidance behaviors displayed by university students towards statistics is highlighted. Novelty:This research project explains why college students dislike or avoid learning statistics in depth. Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of effective knowledge management in mitigating the impact of public health crises. Big data analytics can play a critical role in providing insights and informing decision-making during a pandemic. However, the challenges associated with collecting, analyzing, and managing the data, especially with privacy and security concerns, make it a complex task. This paper proposes a knowledge management framework for COVID-19 mitigation using a big data analytics approach. The framework includes a systematic process for data collection, analysis, and dissemination, as well as a set of best practices for knowledge management. Additionally, the framework complies with data protection and privacy regulations. The proposed framework aims to support public health officials and other stakeholders in effectively managing the COVID-19 pandemic by providing timely and accurate information. It can also be adapted and applied to other public health crises and be a useful tool for addressing the challenges associated with big data analytics in the context of public health. Abstract

The study aims to examine the relationship and interaction between learning organization culture and the factors influencing digital transformation (leadership style, training, digital readiness, and trust), as well as identify factors that significantly influence learning organization functioning by exploring the extension of a grounded theory framework. The survey was conducted using an online questionnaire. The survey population was composed of managers of Eastern European manufacturing companies who were reached through the Orbis database. The survey yielded 618 evaluable responses (n = 618). The PLS-SEM method was used because the structural model is complex, with many constructs (some of which are formatively measured) and model relationships. Leadership behavior and a supportive management style inspire the development and training of employees, through which the level of readiness for digitalization and Industry 4.0 technologies can be increased. Training in these skills will increase confidence in digitalization technologies. Leadership support also influences digital trust and employee response to the use of digital technologies, as does participation in training, which directly supports digitalization and I4.0 readiness. The results of the research not only support previous research findings but also complement them by focusing specifically on the impact on the learning organization in the context of digitalization. This study provides evidence that leadership that is supportive of the learning organization's culture plays a key role. Overall, leadership is a dominant influence in the digital transformation of organizations and in shaping the learning organization culture this requires, but all the relationships represented in the model have a significant positive relationship. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-SIED2-09 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

The twenty-first century is witnessing an increasing and clear interest in studying the relationship between student teachers' motivation and their participation in professional development programs. This study was designed to find out the student teachers' motivation toward participation in professional development programs and to identify the role of motivation in influencing the ambition, perseverance, and desire of student teachers to be effective and active in carrying out activities and tasks. The descriptive survey design was employed, 75 student teachers were chosen to participate, and data were collected using a developed instrument after ensuring its validity and reliability. The results of the study showed that the level of student teachers' motivation toward participation in professional development programs was very high and that they are aware of the fact that professional development programs are the most effective means for developing their ambition, perseverance, and desire to participate in activities and tasks. Abstract

Objectives: All businesses worldwide, especially small and medium-sized organizations, are now concerned about environmental degradation. Eco-innovation and environmental collaboration are expected to be the driving forces for saving the environment and the performance of companies. Therefore, this study aimed to ascertain how eco-innovation and environmental cooperation affect the financial, social, and environmental performance of SMEs. This study also explored environmental collaboration as a moderating variable for the effect of eco-innovation on the performance of SMEs. Methods/Analysis: Data from 300 small and medium-sized enterprises of Creative Home Décor were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings: Eco-innovation is necessary to improve the performance of Indonesia's SMEs. Environmental collaboration has a beneficial and substantial effect on the performance of the environment and society. Regarding environmental collaboration as a moderating variable, this study identified a positive and statistically significant coefficient regulating the relationship between financial performance and eco-innovation. Novelty /Improvement. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on the impact of eco-innovation and environmental collaboration on the performance of SMEs, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also contributed to the theoretical and empirical understanding of eco-innovation in developing countries and highlighted the importance of environmental collaboration in enhancing the social and environmental performance of SMEs. Abstract

The concept of legal principles for intellectual property (IP) protection is related to the adequate marketing of drug patents to protect patent rights. The objective of this research is to understand and analyze the factors affecting the market concerning international law, treaties, acts, and declarations, leading to encouraging creativity, production, increased investment, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The qualitative methodology provided for an in-depth understanding and analysis of primary and secondary research data gathered from key informant interviews and published literature. The collected data were analyzed with Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threats (SWOT), a Delphi panel, and Correct, Adapt, Maintain, and Explore (CAME) analysis. The results found legal problems concerning the lack of rules to protect the rights and freedoms damaged by the monopoly on drug patents, complexities in the process of importing medicinal compounds, and how to access information with limited accessibility during COVID-19. Therefore, it is advisable to amend the law to curtail monopolies and to enact a law that prescribes rules for importing medicinal compounds to produce generic drugs in the country, including identifying the status of the patent holders. Abstract

The aim of the study is to present a newly developed research instrument examining the determinants of second chance programmes' success or failure from the perspective of teachers. In the theoretical part of the study, the authors elaborate on the issues of second chance education and focus on factors having a direct impact on the results of its realization. Subsequently, the Second Chance Education Indicators Questionnaire developed by the authors, the results of the carried out internal factorial analysis, as well as the calculated correlations, are presented. Based on the gathered data from 1,038 teachers, seven factors – "Satisfying employers' needs in the field of education"; "Promoting the development of teachers' competencies for second chance education"; "Providing teachers with support in developing their professional skills in the field of second chance education"; "Funding schools providing second chance education"; "The system of dual VET in second chance education"; and "Potentials for increasing the quality of second chance education" – were identified, and the existence of an internal factorial structure was confirmed. Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic lockdown measures reasonably limited the social contacts of people in many countries. It is crucial to understand the effect of such policies on people's social ties and the possible need for evidence-based public policy amendments. Therefore, this study examines 1) the prevalence of loneliness in the population aged 15+ in Lithuania in late 2021 and 2) the self-rated effect of the COVID crisis on loneliness in population groups with different levels of loneliness. It also focuses on the socio-demographic characteristics of these population groups. Data from a representative cross-sectional quantitative survey (N = 1067), carried out in November–December 2021, was used. Based on the 6-item De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, descriptive statistics analysis revealed the high prevalence (51% of a medium level of loneliness) in the Lithuanian population. One in three people (36%) declared low-level loneliness, and each seventh or eighth (13%) reported high-level loneliness. The feelings of respondents who reported a high level of loneliness were also less stable; they more often stated that their feelings of loneliness increased during the pandemic. These research findings make contributions to studies of loneliness within the context of sudden crises. They emphasise the importance of policymakers focusing on additional measures when preparing for future emergencies and providing special attention to residents who experience the highest levels of loneliness. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-SPER-020 Full Text: PDF
