Abstract

Space and architecture are two interrelated and encompassing concepts. However, space has a broad meaning in terms of location, privacy, and function such that the relationship between two spaces creates a different atmosphere and impression. A lot of studies have been conducted on space but there is no much focus on the concept of 'in-between space'. This research was, therefore, aimed at exploring in-between space in order to create a clear understanding and identify its concept in Batak Toba vernacular architecture. A content analysis method was adopted and this involves analyzing texts and images related to in-between space and Batak Toba architecture. The results showed the concept as an overlap created by two spaces in order to feel the atmosphere of both simultaneously. It was also discovered not to be a definitive space but found in the Batak Toba architecture to create a relationship between privacy, function, and environment. This means it is a key feature of the architecture and also expected to be a fundamental element in the modern Toba Batak architecture. These results are expected to serve as the basis for further in-depth research and to be applied in other ethnic architectures.

Abstract

Contextual architecture is a concept used in creating building design and functions with due consideration for local characteristics to ensure sustainability with the surrounding or pre-existing conditions. The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) campus is divided into three zones which are heritage or traditional, transition, and modern. A building is, however, located between the heritage and transition zones which are known as the Campus Center and considered to have damaged the zoning division on the master plan for the area due to the presence of new modern building designs. This study was, therefore, conducted to determine the common thread existing between the Campus Center and the surrounding two zones, the heritage zone with the West Hall case, and the transition zone with the engineering laboratory V case. Descriptive, analytic, and interpretative methods, with contextual theory, archetypes, ordering principles were used and the results showed the three buildings have a common thread which includes the roofs, columns, hallways, and corridors but only the Campus Center has columns, hallways, and corridors. The findings of this study are expected to provide theoretical and pragmatic benefits for writers and readers. Theoretically, the object dissection knowledge with archetypes and order elements to obtain the contextual forms of the building was provided while the pragmatic aspect focuses on understanding the contextual form of modern buildings.

Abstract

Several factors have been implicated as responsible for personalization of dwellings. These factors ranges from demographic, socioeconomic and cultural. Demographic factors however, have been most frequently cited with respect to housing behaviour of households. Within the context of public housing, this study seeks to investigate factors influencing personalization of dwellings among residents of public housing estates using selected Public Housing Estates of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) as case study. The cross-sectional survey research design was employed in this study. This involved collection of primary data using structured questionnaire and personal observations. Four public housing estates were selected purposively comprising three low-income and one medium-income housing estate out of 22 low-income and 10 medium-income estates, being the largest estates. The sampling frame for the four selected estates comprised 9734 housing units in 1361 blocks of flat out of which systematic random sampling was used to select a sample size of 973 housing units. The result of the binary logistic regression revealed gender, religion, educational and income level, current household size, satisfaction with housing design, living status and availability of alternative dwelling were all significantly associated with personalization of dwellings. Lower odds of personalization was found among the men (OR=0.003, p<0.05) when compared to the women. While the odds of personalization was 82.0% lower (OR=0.18, p<0.05) among respondents from other religious group relative to respondents affiliated to the Christian religion, respondents affiliated to the Islam religion were 18.0% (OR=0.82, p>0.05) less likely to personalize their dwellings relative to Christian respondents, although the result was not statistically significant for respondents affiliated to Islam women. While respondents with higher education were 85.0% (OR=0.15, p<0.05) less likely to personalize their dwellings, respondents with secondary education were 69.0% (OR=0.31, p>0.05) less likely to personalize their dwellings relative to respondents with maximum of primary education, though the results was not statistically significant among respondents with maximum of primary education. Other factors that were significantly associated with personalization of dwellings include: higher income level, household size, level of satisfactions with design, residency status and ownership of alternative apartment. The findings of this study reinforced the importance of socio-economic variables as important factors to be considered in the study of personalization of dwellings.

Abstract

Cirebon is a unique city with 3 palaces, including Kasepuhan, Kanoman, Kacirebonan. The palaces are influenced by the history and culture of the Baluwarti palace, which is believed to have specific concepts in the arrangement and placement of building masses. This study examines the concepts underlying Baluwarti in the 3 Cirebon palaces. This is achieved by first studying the basis of Palace's trust rules used to regulate the mass placing of the palace building. Subsequently, the study uses an architectural anatomical theory consisting of the building site and scope, and the property-composition theory to explore the orientation and position of the Palace building. The results showed that the concept underlying Baluwarti in the 3 Cirebon palaces consists of Javanese and Sundanese cosmologies as building orientation, the type of land on which it was built, and Mahameru and the building position. This research contributes to the general architecture in the uniqueness of historical, cultural and local values. Also, it provides architectural information regarding the concepts underlying Baluwarti in the 3 Cirebon palaces.

Abstract

The government is currently conducting programs to provide subsidized housing in order to meet the needs of low-income people. Some of the houses provided have, however, been modified by the residents to ensure proper and effective implementation of their activities and this indicates a benchmark of the dissatisfaction of the residents and omission of a particular thing in the initial design of the subsidized housing program provided by the government. The Grand Permata Residence II Housing used as a case study has a house with type 36/91 m2 and 13 out of 14 respondents have transformed their residential space according to their economic capacity as low-income people. This study was, therefore, conducted to map the residential space transformation of the subsidized housing program provided by the government and determine the causative factors. Primary data were obtained in the form of designs and photos of space transformation through direct observation and interviews with residents while secondary data were in the form of initial floor plans retrieved from the housing manager and analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. The findings serve as an evaluation for the government in designing subsidized housing which meets the target and needs of low-income people.

Abstract

White soil is a common material in Timor Island, especially in Kupang, usually molded into bricks without adding sand due to its high sand content which has been recorded to be between 30-65%. This study was, therefore, conducted to determine the effect of adding husk ash and coconut fiber on the compressive strength of white soil bricks mixture using an experimental method. The process involved drying the white soil bricks using winding for 28 days after molding after which the compressive strengths for the coconut fiber with cement and rice husk with cement were measured. The results showed a ratio of 1 coconut fiber to 1 cement produced 7 white soil with compressive strength at 147 kg/cm² while 1.5 rice husk ash to 1 cement produced 7 white soil with 114.3 kg/cm². These were, however, observed to be much higher than the findings of previous studies which used 1 cement to 7 white soil to produce 51.9 kg/cm². This, therefore, means the compressive strength produced in this study exceeds the value for quality 1 bricks based on SNI 03-0349-1989 for loaded and unprotected constructions.
