Abstract

Indonesia is located in a geographic area that is prone to disasters; thus, it is necessary to raise awareness about the science of disaster mitigation, including the provision of safe/suitable temporary shelter/building facilities for victims. In a number of disasters, it can be seen that confusion and access to the affected transportation will lead to difficulties in delivering disaster relief and supporting equipment to build post-disaster facilities. Therefore, we need a construction system that is easily assembled, stable, and easy to carry. In this case, the designer uses one type of shell structure, i.e. Minimum Surface principle which is the basis of the Inflatable Structure or Pneumatic Structure. By developing lightweight structures that refer to this principle, the designer can process architectural forms that are lighter and more stable. In this paper, the discussion is limited to the use of materials made from plywood based on the principle of Minimal Surface structure because this material is easily obtained and processed. The research questions of this study are how to create a fast raft construction system for post-disaster needs with plywood base material and how to process the connection system or plywood construction to have structural capability. © 2020 Stephanus Evert Indrawan, Gervasius Herry Purwoko, Tri Noviyanto P. Abstract

Playing is one of the activities naturally possessed by children from childhood and elements of learning have been observed to be in playing and vice versa. For example, traditional games have philosophical values with moral messages but they have been replaced by games prioritizing technological advancements over time. This has reduced the familiarity of many children with traditional games in recent times. Meanwhile, the reduction in the quantity and quality of play and public open space for children is often considered one of the factors causing the extinction of traditional games. The availability of an adequate environment including play areas or playground aids children's development. This paper discusses the traditional games known by the present generation and the role of space in sustaining them with the focus on West Java. The study was conducted through observation and distribution of questionnaires to children aged 6-12 years living in Bandung city and some urban settlements. The results provided an overview of the types of traditional games known by the children, the space they favored, and its role in their willingness to play. © 2020 Dhini Dewiyanti Tantarto, Dianna Astrid Hertoery

Abstract

Globalization is being experienced throughout the world with its impact also observed in architecture, even in traditional villages of Indonesia. Some of them have, however, been able to maintain their identity such as the mass-space pattern of the customary village of Bali Aga Mountains in Bali which is discovered not to have changed. This research was, therefore, conducted to determine the relationship between the activities of the traditional society and their mass-space patterns using the customary village of Bali Aga Tenganan Pegringsingan as the case study. This involved the selection of respondents purposively and collection of data using cross sections by identifying unchanged buildings, taking photos, videos, drones, and through direct interviews in the field. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively based on structuring theory or ordering principles and the results confirmed the mass-space pattern in Tenganan Pegringsingan village was built due to the close relations with the traditional activities of the society. The findings can be used in developing architecture by local governments as policymakers as well as academic architects and practitioners, and the wider society. © 2020 Lydia Dewi Setiawan, Purnama Salura, Bachtiar Fauzy

Abstract

Bali Island is a famous tourist destination in the world and this has made it a gathering hub and multicultural meeting center for tourists from several countries, thereby, raising concern on the possibility of the area losing its traditional Balinese architecture. It is necessary to make adjustments by adopting the shape of the old Balinese building. This means the emergence of new functions is not a taboo but a new design challenge, therefore, the traditional Balinese architecture and theater provisions were combined to produce a neo-vernacular architecture by using descriptive qualitative method. This led to the application of Asta Kosala-kosali in the theater space, modification on the roof, body and legs shape of the Balinese building, and the integration of the construction system and materials in the Balinese theater architecture. © 2020 Alan Darma Saputra, Rahadhian Prajudi Herwindo, Yohanes Karyadi Kusliansjah

Abstract

The city's thermal environment plays an important role in achieving comfort and quality of life, especially during the current global pandemic. Meanwhile, reduction in the green areas has been observed to be continuously causing climate change in cities and one of the proposed solutions to this is by developing a greening system for buildings. This paper, therefore, assessed the ability of vertical garden to decrease air and surface temperatures as well as CO2 levels. The research involved field measurements of these parameters both inside and outside the building along with the modification of the vertical garden distance at 0.5 m and 1 m as well as the plant type including red spinach or amaranthus hybridus, mustard or brassica juncea, celery or apium graveolens linn, and cat's whiskers or orthosiphon spicatus. The results showed an average decrease of 0.75°C in air temperature, 16.4ºC in surface temperature, and 58.8 ppm in CO2 levels. Moreover, a maximum reduction of 6ºC was achieved in air temperature with red spinach plants at 0.5 m, 26.3ºC in surface temperature by the Rred spinach plant, and 124 ppm in CO2 levels by celery plants. In conclusion, a closer distance and darker color of the leaves as well as the red spinach species were found to be the main consideration in the application of vertical gardens in urban homes due to their ability to reduce the temperature on the limited land. © 2020 Agung Murti Nugroho

Abstract

Global warming increases the overall temperature of the earth's surface and leads to climate change. Therefore, it plays an important impact on human life, especially in the architecture field. This study aims to identify the rise in environmental temperature due to parked cars with running engines and the use of paving blocks as heat-reducing material. This is a quantitative research with data collected and measured directly in the field, before being processed and explored of natural and waste materials in the laboratory. The results showed: (1) an increase in environmental temperature of ± 34.80C - 39.40C, or 50C to 100C due to parked cars with running engines, (2) the use of rectangular and hexagon paving blocks as heat-reducing material. Therefore, the increase in environmental temperature is reduced by the use of paving blocks, which comprises of basic (cement, sand, and water), natural (grass and fibers), and recycled materials (sawdust and styrofoam).

Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century, the terms genotype and phenotype in biology were adopted into architecture. In the science of architecture genotype was an abstract relational model that governs the arrangement of space, and the principle of organizing space while phenotype was a physical form of architecture. Genotype passed from generation to generation thus informing an identity in the community. The development of globalization and the environment can influence the identity of architectural diversity in each region. Vulnerability in the transformation of architectural forms can have an impact on identities that can survive or disappear. Malay traditional houses in West Kalimantan are on stilts and are located on the riverside. the sample used is a traditional Malay house around the palace in West Kalimantan with a sample of 8 cities and uses 69 sample houses. The method in this study uses the Levi Strauss structuralism and configuration space. External structure analysis has an informed of variation phenotype. through configuration space to finding archetypes. Then, continue to inner structure analysis to finding genotype from that archetype. The result from this study found the value and meanings of principle and arrangement space in traditional Malay house in West Kalimantan in the form of zoning of men and women as well as clean and dirty zones which have always been passed down from generation to generation.

Abstract

The past ten years (2010- 2020), an overwhelming number of buildings (forty-eight) have collapsed in Nigerian urban cities, with about 77% rise from the previous decade. To address this menace, the study aimed at exploring major causes of building collapse in Nigeria as perceived by building industry professionals, policy makers and the public; with a view of establishing effective ways for mitigation. The primary data were obtained from Questionnaires and field observations while secondary data were obtained from textbooks, Journal articles and newspapers. The results revealed that factors such as change of use for building without following professional protocols is a major cause of building collapse. Poor supervision or lack of supervision by qualified professionals; substandard materials, structural failure; government controlling agency not monitoring projects and standards are compromised, a significant amount (27.7%) of collapse cases recorded during constructions. Other factors include faulty architectural and engineering designs; clients not ready to pay for quality jobs and contractors cut corners for profit. The study recommends use of Building Information Modelling to predict behaviour of buildings under various loading and environmental conditions. Also, only certified professionals should carry out design and supervision of projects. Further research should evaluate the role of technology on existing buildings to check the level of safety for occupants’ in such buildings.

Abstract

In the field of architecture, personalization refers to the process through which an individual modifies or alters an element, space or form, to make it distinctly his or her own. Nevertheless, this concept has been of interest in diverse contexts, especially within the context of public housing. This study examine residents? satisfaction with dwellings as correlate of personalization in selected public housing estates in Lagos, Nigeria. Specifically, the study assess resident?s satisfaction with dwellings; ascertain the level of personalization of dwellings; and examined the relationship between satisfaction with dwellings and personalization.  The study utilized a survey research design, in which primary data were collected using structured questionnaire and personal observations. Four public housing estates were purposively selected comprising three low-income and one medium-income housing estate out of 22 low-income and 10 medium-income estates, being the largest estates. The sampling frame comprised 9734 housing units from which a sample size of 973 housing units were selected using systematic random sampling technique. Findings revealed majority of the respondents were not satisfied with the general design and style of the building when they first moved in (98.1%). Respondents not satisfied with the design of the building because it did not give consideration to gender differences constituted (97.4%). Almost all (99.3%) of the respondents reported the original design of their building not meeting their different housing needs, while significant proportion (96.1%) had complained about certain aspects of their house not meeting some specific needs of their family. The level of personalization of dwellings in the study area was quite high. Overall, regardless of the selected housing estate, about two thirds (62.0%) of the residents had personalized their dwelling units. The level of satisfaction was significantly associated with personalization. Higher likelihood of personalization of dwellings was found among respondents who were not satisfied with the design and style of their building when they first moved in (OR=7.09, p<0.05), those who stressed that the design of their house did not give consideration to gender differences (OR=7.17, p<0.05) and residents who lived permanently in their apartment (OR=1.68, p<0.05). Lower likelihood of personalization of dwelling was however found among residents who had another house apart from the one they were currently residing (OR=0.65, p<0.05).  This study, therefore, underscores the importance of satisfaction with dwellings as a correlate of personalization of dwellings in public housing estates.

Abstract

Jelekong is an art and culture village in Baleendah Sub-district of Bandung Regency which is well known for its activities in paintings and wayang golek or puppet crafts. The village’s character related to art is also shaped by several actions and relationships between socio-technical actors apart from the existence of artists and their activities. This research was, therefore, conducted to describe Jelekong Village as a heterogeneous socio-technical network by identifying and analyzing several actors and actions using Actor-Network Theory (ANT) which is a qualitative research method. Five network-actor conception prepositions including 1) the will of actan, 2) actors, 3) composition and translation of action, 4) network locality, and 5) network representation were reviewed to determine the phenomenon of the heterogeneous network formed in the village. The results showed several factors required in becoming Jelekong Village network and they include 1) the artist's will to initiate art actions, 2) existence of sociotechnical agent such as actors and resources related to the artist, 3) a very complex art relationship, 4) establishment of an art environment such as a studio and gallery, and 5) the meaning of art space for artists as a forum to preserve arts and culture as well as potential economic resources.
