Abstract

Mosques as a religious building for the Moslem Community have two orientations and they include the Qibla as the main and direction of the sky as the secondary. Praying is the main element of worship for Moslems and is recommended to be led towards the Qibla or upward direction. The mosque has been discovered not to have a sacred space but Qibla, mihrab, and Qibla marker walls are considered sacred. These sacred orientation signs and markers have been used and developed since the beginning but their existence and understanding have been eroded due to the influence of locals as well as development. Currently, the majority of the mosques in Indonesia have a centralized and strong orientation towards the upper direction when they are expected to have the main orientation in the form of Qibla direction. This study was, therefore, conducted to examine the anatomy of these mosques using semiotic theory by comparing the two mosques with several signs and markers of sacred orientation in the country. The results showed there are new signs and markers but the old ones are still significant in the mosques in the present time.

Abstract

The need for adequate and affordable housing drives the government to implement the rusunawa (low-cost housing) development program in various regions. Futhermore, the government promotes utilization of different replacement materials to optimize the cost and duration of rusunawa development, including reused shipping container. This research discusses the feasibility study of reused shipping containers as substitute material in the design planning of the Rusunawa prototype unit construction. It is a qualitative research that uses case study and statistical data-sets through literature review, precedent study analysis and field surveys. The results provided the standard guideline for designing Rusunawa units made from reused shipping containers and prototype typology units based on the occupant’s type.

Abstract

The application of biophilic architecture design principle on Riau Mitigation and Disaster Management Center Disaster is a series of events that cause significant loss, even casualties. Indonesia, which was called as Laboratory of Disaster was characterized by the increase of complexity and number of disasters each year, which make mitigation and disaster management skill should be a top priority. Hence, a facility where education for mitigation could be held as needed. This facility was designed for education, recreation, and last evacuation shelter, located in Pekanbaru, Riau, due there wasn’t this type of facility in the province. Considering its function, biophilic design was chosen due to its principle of respecting nature; hence users’ productivity, physical and mental health increase and the existence of natural elements could give comfort and refuge. The design methodology was a site survey and data collection about Biophilic architecture design principles and mitigation and disaster prevention center from journals. The result of this methodology is a design of Mitigation and Disaster Management Center in Riau. © 2020 Miftahul Karima, Yohannes Firzal, Gun Faisal

Abstract

There has been a decline in the form and function of Sundanese vernacular architecture for large buildings due to the absence of artifacts in village houses. The data on palace or keraton and terraced roofs are only found in lontar and from outside observers in the XVI century. Meanwhile, the phenomenon of the bale nyungcung roof emerged on the mosque in the XVI-XIX centuries at West Java after disappearing for more or less two centuries. The reappearance makes it interesting to study this concept, especially with the focus on its relationship with the inner room of the mosque. This research was conducted on the Great Mosque spread in Sunda Tatar such as the West Java and Banten Provinces with buildings of Majalaya, Manonjaya, and Banten used as case studies. It was conducted qualitatively and interpretatively using the building anatomical theory to analyze the scope of shape and the Bale Nyungcung roof. The results showed the relationship between the roof and the inner space is a reflection of the adjustment in the mosque's basic reference with the Bale Nyungcung roof used as one of the Sundanese local building features.

Abstract

The implementation of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) concept on pedestrian paths in Manggarai, Jakarta, requires well-ordered pedestrian path, as an area linkage between transit facility and various functions around it. Presently, the pedestrian paths condition around Manggarai Station is still not optimal. Meanwhile, the Transit-Oriented Development concept demands compliance with the standards in its implementation. This study aims to assess the pedestrian paths feasibility in the area around Manggarai Station, based on the criteria that should be met in supporting the concept implementation process. This research applied an evaluative method through POE (Post-Occupancy Evaluation), in measuring the standards of the existing pedestrian paths and providing recommendations for the authorities. The findings are novelties in understanding the disadvantages of safety factors, physical infrastructure, shelter for the hot and rainy season, easy access to the elderly and people with disabilities, especially in linking supporting facilities. Interestingly, the pedestrian path has an attraction that triggers people to walk a long distance with ease. Also, these findings are important in designing Transit-Oriented Development at Manggarai, such as wide sidewalks, providing zebra crossings, and trees. In addition, these result are in the form of suggestions for improving pedestrian path conditions as well as providing action plans for stakeholders.

Abstract

Urban kampung in Indonesia has the characteristics of a high population density living in a limited amount of land. Residents of an urban kampung require a space that can be used together to carry out communal activities. However, the limited amount of land in a kampung causes these activities to occupy whatever land is available which often has uncertain ownership status. A team from the Department of Architecture UI built 'Popsyandu' shelter in Kampung Palsigunung, Depok, West Java, using the 'flexible architecture' approach to respond to the needs and issues of the kampung. Using qualitative methods and data collection through observation and interview, this paper attempts to discuss the application of flexible architecture in the design of 'Popsyandu'. The result shows that the application of 'flexible architecture' approach is difficult to be comprehended by the residents of the kampung, even though the designers tried to involve the residents during the design and construction process. Therefore, the authors conclude that in adopting a flexible architecture to respond to certain issues, the designer must consider the capabilities of the user instead of just following the theories stated beforehand. © 2020 Dalhar Susanto, Widyarko, Nisrina Dewi Salsabila

Abstract

The environmental amenities of areas with a high elderly population need to be adjusted to support their lives and ensure they experience a healthy aging process. Therefore, this research examines the role of residential areas in providing support to the daily activities of the elderly for their optimal and everyday use of available outdoor seating facilities. Data were obtained from 25 outdoor seating facilities in a densely populated environment in Yogyakarta City center through observations, interviews, and person-centered mapping of the elderly as respondents. The results showed that the elderly utilize outdoor seating for social, recreation, rest, shelter, and household activities. Therefore, it is still necessary to improve the physical quality of seating in these facilities to ensure that they are maximally utilized by the elderly. The important aspect in establishing these criteria are as follows: (1) dimensions, (2) protection, (3) material, (4) Form, and (5) comfort.

Abstract

Sliding Sudare has a big potential to be developed considered its high effectiveness in minimizing building energy consumption while still maintaining its visibility quality. Meanwhile, its original blinds that is made of bamboo cannot withstand extreme weather and have a short lifespan. Therefore, this research is to investigate the effectiveness of the other material alternatives namely stainless steel, plastic, and natural fiber. A scaled model is used for prototyping the materials in the shape of bicycle spokes, PLA+ (3D printer filament), and bamboo slats as the blinds. These everyday objects were tested in terms of their physical characteristic and were measured by four parameters (security requirement, weather resistance, construction process, and cost-effectiveness). From the research, it was concluded that bicycle spokes has the highest overall performance with the highest advantages in weather resistance requirement, cost-effectiveness, and construction; whilst PLA+ and bamboo slats have the least overall performance though both have high advantage in terms of security requirement.

Abstract

Greenship Interior Space is a rating tool used in ensuring more sustainable and healthy indoor space with the focus on the health and comfort of the users thermally, visually, and acoustically. It is important to study this concept further to ensure a healthier workspace where most workers spend 80-90% of their time. This is necessary because a well-designed Indoor Health and Comfort has the ability to prevent the emergence of Sick Building Syndrome and increase employee productivity. This research was conducted using the Ciputra University workplace as a case study. Moreover, a descriptive quantitative approach was implemented with data collected through observation, interviews, and field measurements. The results showed the possibility of optimizing the visual comfort and outside view in the workplace to obtain the appropriate level of illumination and to improve workers’ productivity. This, therefore, means, a workplace needs to address the environmentally and socially conscious behavior and also support employee performance in order to improve productivity in line with the strategies of a green workplace.
