Abstract

The phenomenon of housing based on Islamic values is increasingly developing in Indonesia, yet research on the spatial manifestations of these values and local culture remains limited. This study aims to analyze how the Islamic values embraced by Muhammadiyah and the Indonesian Da'wah Institute (LDII) are realized in the production of residential space in Bogor, employing Henri Lefebvre's theoretical framework. Through a comparative analysis of Mustika Residence Muhammadiyah and the Nurul Iman Mosque Complex of LDII, this research reveals significant differences across the three dimensions of space production. Muhammadiyah housing exhibits moderate spatial practices with functional design and symbols of Islamic renewal, while LDII housing displays clear physical boundaries and dominant internal interactions. The implications of this research for the field of architecture highlight the importance of considering religious values and local culture in residential space design. These findings can assist stakeholders in creating housing that is responsive to community needs and provide insights for academics and practitioners. This study enriches Lefebvre's theory by demonstrating the role of religious dimensions in space formation, proving that variations in interpretation within a single value system can lead to different spatial manifestations, thereby contributing to interdisciplinary studies on religion and urban space.

Abstract

Taman Nostalgia has served as the main public open space in Kupang City since its inauguration in 2011. Designed as a space for recreation and social interaction, the park plays a significant role in the daily lives of city residents. After 14 years of operation, a quality assessment is necessary to evaluate how well the park functions as an inclusive space for all. This study evaluates the quality of Taman Nostalgia using the Public Space Index (PSI) method, supported by a behavioral mapping analysis conducted previously (Neonufa, 2024), which provides a foundation for assessing spatial quality. The results show that the park’s average public space quality index is 63.4. The aspects of inclusiveness (75.9) and pleasurability (75.5) recorded the highest scores, while meaningful activities (56.2), safety (56.5), and comfort (52.7) indicated areas needing improvement. Overall, Taman Nostalgia is considered an inclusive public space with a strategic location, good accessibility, sufficient area, and a variety of existing activities. However, improvements are still needed in terms of activity diversity, facility provision, safety, and visitor comfort. These findings have important implications for the future design and management of public open spaces in Kupang. The combined approach of behavioral analysis and the PSI method provide comprehensive and context-responsive recommendations that address user needs and local characteristics.

Abstract

This study examines the denotative and connotative meanings of architectural elements in historical buildings on Malioboro Street, Yogyakarta, using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The Malioboro shopping area has undergone modernization, impacting the function and public interpretation of its buildings. This research aims to understand the existing visual forms in logos, exteriors, and interiors contribute to constructing architectural meaning and how visitors interpret these signs in cultural and historical contexts. The research method involves direct observation and structured interviews with 12 respondents, consisting of both new and returning visitors. The analysis focuses on six selected buildings that have retained their original architectural form. The findings indicate that denotative meaning is more easily recognized than connotative meaning. Logos and exteriors play a more significant role in communicating explicit meanings, while interiors contribute more to conveying symbolic meanings. These findings emphasize the importance of preserving historical architectural elements to maintain cultural identity and symbolic heritage in Malioboro through visitors' collective experience and perception of the area. Implications for architectural science, this research enriches architecture by bridging the gap between physical form and socio-cultural meaning. This approach not only optimizes the function of space but also makes architecture a medium of communication that is relevant to the context of the times.

Abstract

Bangka Island has challenges in tropical climate development such as limitations in the selection of efficient materials and energy, thus requiring a building concept that is adaptive to the climate. The Coral Eye Resort on Bangka Island is a building with a modern concept that adapts the local wisdom of Minahasa architecture to its building. The adaptation of traditional architecture to modern buildings is adaptive to the tropical climate because it can affect the thermal comfort of the building. This study aims to evaluate how the principles of local wisdom of Minahasa traditional architecture affect thermal comfort passively. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach to examine design elements such as building orientation and shape, local materials, openings, and spatial layout through observation techniques. Thermal comfort is tested through user perceptions collected through in-depth interviews, replacing the quantitative approach generally used in research related to thermal comfort. The results of the study indicate that the application of the principles of local wisdom of Minahasa traditional architecture, such as high roofs, large openings, and the use of local materials has an impact on increasing thermal comfort felt by users. The findings of this study provide insight into the implications of the theory of adaptation of Minahasa Traditional Architecture to thermal comfort in the context of modern buildings in coastal areas.

Abstract

Kirab Jenang Tebokan tradition in Kaliputu Village, Kudus Regency, is a cultural ritual that has a deep meaning in the social life of the local community. This tradition has been going on since 2006 by passing through the road corridors around Kaliputu Village. Still, in 2018, the procession's route changed by passing through the main road of Kaliputu Village to Kaliputu Village Hall. In this case, the tradition functions as a cultural celebration involving the community and as a representation of the dynamics of cultural space built during the procession. Kirab Jenang Tebokan creates temporary spaces full of social value where people gather, interact, and share in a family atmosphere. The implementation of route changes in the procession causes changes in the meaning of cultural space, which becomes the spatial embodiment of the Kirab Jenang Tebokkan tradition. This research examines the dynamics of cultural space formed during the Kirab Jenang Tebokan procession, as well as how the community uses and interprets the space. This research method uses a qualitative approach through field observations and interviews with traditional leaders and local people involved in the activity. The results showed that changes in the route of the curb affected the pattern of social interaction, accessibility, and people's perceptions in interpreting the cultural space formed during the procession. In addition, these changes can expand community involvement and strengthen local cultural identity. The implications of this research can provide insights for stakeholders, architectural practitioners, and academics in planning local culture-based public spaces.

Abstract

This study explores revitalization strategies for Chinese shophouses in the Chinatown areas of Semarang and Phuket, focusing on heritage-based tourism development. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method to examine three main aspects: revitalization, building adaptation through retrofitting, and government policies supporting these transformations. The selected case studies, Tjiang Residence in Semarang and Moh Seng Historical House in Phuket, represent different approaches to preserving cultural heritage while adapting to modern functions. The findings reveal that the Moh Seng Historic House prioritizes the authenticity of architectural and historical values supported by heritage designation. Simultaneously, the Tjiang Residence emphasizes functional optimization for economic purposes without formal heritage recognition. Both cases maintain a Chinese cultural identity through architectural elements and decorative features. The study concludes that successful revitalization strategies balance the preservation of historical character with functional adaptations, enhancing the cultural tourism appeal of heritage districts.

Abstract

Manado City is experiencing rapid population growth, with an annual increase of 1.48% and a population density reaching 2,948 people/km² as of 2024. Due to the city’s predominantly hilly topography, residential expansion has increasingly shifted toward sloped areas. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of residential settlements on sloped terrain using the Average Nearest Neighbor (ANN) method and to evaluate land suitability through Weighted Overlay Analysis (WOA) within a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. Parameters for WOA include topography, slope gradient, disaster risk, and land-use zoning based on the 2023–2042 Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) of Manado. The GIS-based analysis, conducted using ArcGIS 10.8 and ArcScene, reveals that settlements are concentrated on slopes with gradients of 25–40% and >40%, covering 163.78 hectares. The densest clusters occur in Wanea and Malalayang Districts. WOA results indicate that Wanea has a larger landslide-prone area (39.53 ha) compared to Malalayang, necessitating risk-sensitive planning. Spatial conformity analysis highlights misalignment between current residential land use and the official RTRW. A spatial planning model was proposed for Karombasan Selatan Subdistrict, integrating terraced housing design, optimal building orientation, and conservation zoning for slopes above 40%. This study contributes to sustainable urban development strategies in hilly urban environments through GIS-based decision support.

Abstract

The 2009 earthquake in Padang, Indonesia, caused significant damage to heritage assets, posing challenges to preserving their authenticity during recovery. This study examines the implementation of the Nara Protocol's six authenticity attributes traditions and techniques, form and design, use and function, materials and substance, spirit and feeling, and location and setting in participatory community-led heritage recovery efforts. The objective is to assess how the recovery process aligns with the Nara Protocol's principles of contextual authenticity while addressing local cultural values. A mixed-method approach was employed, including field surveys of damaged heritage structures, stakeholder interviews, and document analysis of pre- and post-disaster records. The results indicate various implementations of the six authenticity attributes, leading to alterations in authenticity. Religious and community buildings show more changes in materials and techniques due to the availability of present-day materials and the built-back-better principle, aiming to provide safer buildings and environments for future earthquakes. The lack of sufficient documentation challenges restoration efforts post-disaster, resulting in changes in shape and design. Advocacy from experts, universities, ancestors, and donors supports these conservation efforts. This study also highlights that community involvement is crucial to ensure the authenticity of spirit and feeling post-recovery.

Abstract

The role of infrastructure investment is increasingly critical in both developed and transitional economies due to its wide-ranging multiplier effects, including capital inflows, production growth, and enhanced transport efficiency. This article aims to examine the significance of infrastructure investments across these economic contexts. Using a comparative and structural analysis of infrastructure investment from 1990 to 2023, the study highlights key regional differences across Europe, Central Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific. These variations are influenced by factors such as institutional capacity, urbanization levels, population density, infrastructure needs, export potential, and budget constraints. Political and regulatory frameworks for attracting public and private investment significantly shape capital allocation strategies. In East Asia and the Pacific, investment is primarily directed toward new transport infrastructure through greenfield projects and mixed financing models. Conversely, Europe and Central Asia focus on modernizing existing infrastructure through pragmatic and balanced investment policies, often influenced by national financial strategies. The findings offer practical value by demonstrating how the experiences of developed economies can inform infrastructure strategies in transitioning countries, promoting more efficient investment practices and long-term development planning. These insights are particularly relevant for policymakers seeking to optimize infrastructure growth within their specific economic and institutional contexts.

Abstract

Padmasana architecture is the most important sacred building in Balinese temples. Padmasana functions as the sthana (seat) of God and has many types, depending on the concept of God being represented. The ‘three padmas’ form, one of the types of padmasana architecture found in the Luhur Muncaksari Temple, is very different from the padmasana forms found in other major temples in Bali. This uniqueness often causes difficulties in understanding its function and symbolic meaning, both for the general public and intellectual circles. To understand its representation, an interpretation is carried out by broadening the horizon of understanding, from the parts of the form to the form as a whole. The purpose of this study is to discover the concept of God represented in the visual form of the ‘three padmas’. The findings reveal that the padma tiga at Pura Luhur Muncaksari symbolically represents the Trimurti: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, through its spatial composition, structural elements, and ornamental features. These findings are crucial for informing the development and preservation of traditional Balinese architecture, which is rooted in cosmological and philosophical foundations.
