Abstract

Urbanization has resulted in a continuous escalation of land values and housing prices in urban regions, while the demand for residential units in cities persists in increasing. As a result, government-provided subsidized housing has become a crucial option for low-income communities. Nevertheless, these subsidized housing projects are frequently criticized for their insufficient construction quality. Growing concerns have emerged that such developments may unintentionally intensify global warming by elevating ambient temperatures within the residential environment. This study investigates how variations in building mass configuration and architectural form influence outdoor temperature as a passive design strategy to improve thermal conditions in subsidized housing areas. The analysis employs a hypothetical massing model of subsidized housing simulated using Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, and Ladybug. The results demonstrate that adjustments in building mass configuration and form are capable of lowering outdoor temperatures, although the impact remains relatively modest. Case Study 4B, which uses asphalt as the site’s surface material and represents the scenario with the most favorable UTCI values in both orientations, achieves a UTCI reduction of 1.8 °C for the West–East orientation and 1.6 °C for the North–South orientation when compared to the base case.

Abstract

Historical records indicate that Chinese communities have consistently adapted to their surrounding environments. This adaptive capacity has influenced both activities and architectural styles found within Chinatown areas. Although the architectural forms of Chinatowns may appear similar on the surface, they often embody an integration of traditions and belief systems that shape their design. This study aims to explore, analyze, and define the relationship between the traditions and belief systems of the Chinese community and the architectural forms of Chinatown in the Lasem Chinatown area, Central Java. A qualitative approach is employed in this research to collect primary data through two main methods: (1) conducting interviews with key informants to gather data on traditions and beliefs related to activities, and (2) carrying out field observations to collect data on the architectural forms of Chinatown. The data are analyzed and interpreted to reveal the relationships between the interview information obtained and the observational findings. In the context of residential buildings, the traditions and beliefs of the Chinese community are transmitted from generation to generation without significantly altering the architectural form. Chinese architecture functions as a pragmatic replication of ancient structures from their homeland, brought by Chinese immigrants to Indonesia, particularly to Lasem. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the relationship between traditions and belief systems and the architectural forms of Chinatown, and propose strategies for the sustainability of contemporary Chinese architectural practices.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of urban development in tropical regions has substantially increased local microclimate temperatures, primarily as a consequence of the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon. Landscape design is widely acknowledged as an effective passive strategy for mitigating these adverse thermal conditions. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of landscape layout and design at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Surakarta in reducing both surface and ambient air temperatures within the surrounding neighborhood. The research adopts a quantitative methodological approach that integrates systematic temperature measurements, direct field observations, and an in-depth review of relevant literature. The investigation was carried out through the combined use of satellite imagery, in situ surface temperature measurements, and spatial analysis focusing on the distribution of vegetation, water ponds, and shading elements. The findings demonstrate that the strategic placement of vegetation and water features is capable of reducing surface temperatures by up to 5°C during daylight hours. These results underscore the critical role of landscape design as a climate-adaptive component in public building environments, particularly within tropical contexts. Moreover, the research provides a meaningful contribution to the development of tropical climate-responsive landscape design strategies aimed at enhancing building thermal comfort and supporting the realization of sustainable development in religious public spaces.

Abstract

Participatory approaches hold significant relevance within complex architectural research, serving as a vital link between theoretical inquiry and practical implementation. Among the prominent methods within this paradigm is the Delphi method, a systematic and iterative procedure that employs anonymous expert insights to cultivate collective agreement. While it has long been acknowledged for its strength in producing consensus, forecasting emerging tendencies, filtering conceptual propositions, and assessing issues that demand informed collective judgment, its utilization in architectural research remains comparatively limited. This study seeks to examine the Delphi method’s capabilities, delineate its strengths and constraints, and underscore its prospective contributions to architectural research practices. Employing a qualitative strategy through an integrative review of literature, data were gathered from 54 selected publications issued between 2000 and 2025. These data were subsequently interpreted using thematic content analysis. The results affirmed the Delphi method’s proficiency in generating impartial, multidisciplinary concurrence, its versatility in synthesizing diverse bodies of knowledge, and its particular relevance for navigating complex and future-oriented architectural challenges. Nevertheless, it also encounters obstacles such as participant withdrawal, the possibility of producing manufactured consensus, and inherent limitations in representing real-time social interactions. The methodological potential of the Delphi technique to broaden the boundaries of architectural research becomes even more substantial when combined with approaches such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process, Focus Group Discussions, or Q-Methodology.

Abstract

Numerous initiatives have been undertaken to safeguard cultural heritage, including reconstruction and restoration efforts led by various stakeholders. One such case is the traditional village of Wae Rebo, where the Mbaru Niang houses serve as a prominent example of preservation through the faithful reconstruction of architectural form and structural integrity. Since Wae Rebo developed into a tourist destination in 1997, Mbaru Niang has experienced multiple reconstruction phases, each time maintaining its original shape—a form intrinsically linked to both its function and symbolic meaning. This interconnectedness is particularly evident in vernacular architecture, where function, form, and meaning are inherently interrelated. These observations prompt critical questions: Do current preservation practices uphold the original relationship among function, form, and meaning? And to what extent does preserving the same form influence their functional and symbolic roles? This research aims to examine the architectural dimensions of function, form, and meaning of Mbaru Niang in Wae Rebo Village by employing qualitative methods, including field observations and interviews. The study aspires to enrich the discourse surrounding Wae Rebo’s architectural heritage while offering a critical perspective on traditional structures subjected to conservation practices.

Abstract

Motivated by the advancement of the net-zero hospitality concept in Indonesia, and considering the relatively high average humidity levels found in tropical countries with varied climatic conditions, this study examines the effects of integrating phase change materials (PCMs) into hotel building envelope systems across six Indonesian cities representing a wide range of tropical climate classifications (Af, Am, Aw, and Bsh). The objective is to improve total energy consumption (TEC), life cycle cost (LCC), and carbon dioxide (CO?) emissions performance. This research evaluates the efficiency of PCM-reinforced wall systems under two dual-objective optimization scenarios: (1) TEC versus LCC and (2) TEC versus CO? emissions, using an integrated simulation framework combining DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, and a multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The results indicate that PCM integration can substantially enhance total energy savings and reduce CO? emissions by up to 47.80 percent and 52.96 percent, respectively, particularly in earth-based and masonry wall assemblies. Significant economic benefits were also identified, with life cycle cost savings reaching up to 29.62 percent and reductions in the average tariff cost per square meter of approximately 22.15 percent in high-tariff zones, such as Denpasar, when these construction systems are applied. The optimal PCM configurations were found to be climate-dependent, performing most effectively with external PCM placement and melting temperature ranges between 23 and 29°C. Overall, the findings demonstrate that PCM integration can provide sustainable, cost-effective, and climate-responsive building envelope solutions for the hospitality sector in tropical regions. Furthermore, the study presents a robust optimization framework that is scalable for both retrofit applications and new construction, supporting Indonesia’s ecotourism development and zero-emission building agenda.

Abstract

Many urban kampungs in Yogyakarta have undergone significant transformation into tourism-oriented destinations, including the neighborhood of Prawirotaman. This transformation has contributed to the reduction of children’s play spaces and has limited opportunities for outdoor play experiences compared to those available to children living in rural environments. Consequently, children are required to continuously negotiate and adapt to the spatial and social changes occurring within their neighborhood context. Accordingly, this study seeks to examine the relationship between play territoriality and the spatial experiences that shape children’s behavioral responses, while simultaneously addressing existing research gaps concerning children’s territorial adaptation behavior. Data collection was conducted through snapshot observations to document children’s play activities and movement patterns, including gestures, conversations, spatial settings, and the objects involved in play activities. These observations were further supported by drawings, narratives, and mapping techniques. The study employed a behavioral approach combined with content analysis methods. The findings reveal that children living within kampung environments adapt to ongoing neighborhood transformation through forms of territorial leeway that enable play activities to persist. Furthermore, children’s spatial experiences significantly influence their adaptive behavior, their perceptions of transitional spaces, and the extent of their play territories. This study contributes to the enrichment of architectural behavioral theory and provides a foundational framework for the development of child-friendly residential settlements.

Abstract

The Dutch East Indies' colonial infrastructure, particularly Java's railway network and its linkages to sugar fields and mills, changed urban and economic environments. Railways, originally designed for military defense in the 1840s, became economic arteries supporting agro-industrial growth under the Cultuurstelsel (1830) and Agrarian Law (1870), according to historical data. Strategic railway planning promotes resource extraction, urban expansion, and path dependence, sustaining urban centers after colonialism. Synchronic-diachronic and network analysis compare the phased development of railway stations and sugar mills (1830–1942), examining shared architectural influences, materials (from local wood to imported steel), and styles (pragmatic neoclassical to Indies and Art Deco). Railways efficiently transported sugarcane and cargo, while mills incorporated rail lines, creating divided towns and industrial landscapes. Technical adaptations to tropical temperatures and commercial incentives show how colonial exploitation shaped Java's spatial character. This study illuminates how colonial infrastructure, architectural rationalism, and economic imperatives shaped Java's modern landscape, enriching historical studies.

Abstract

Balinese traditional architecture constitutes a significant cultural legacy enriched with philosophical, societal, and ecological meanings; however, its continuity is increasingly challenged by the pressures of modernization, rapid urban expansion, and the declining transmission of indigenous knowledge across generations. This study investigates the function of integrating digital technologies as a conservation strategy aimed at reinforcing long-term cultural sustainability. A qualitative-descriptive approach is adopted through comprehensive literature review, on-site observation, and case-study examination of the digitalization processes applied to traditional architectural structures. The findings indicate that digital recording techniques (3D scanning, photogrammetry) together with immersive educational visualization (augmented reality/AR, virtual reality/VR) significantly improve the precision of heritage documentation, generate opportunities within the creative economy, support cultural learning initiatives, and enhance the involvement of local communities. Nevertheless, several major constraints remain, including limited digital literacy among stakeholders, inadequate technological infrastructure, cultural hesitation toward technological intervention, and the absence of coherent and integrative policy frameworks. Based on these findings, a strategic framework identified as the “Digital-Integrated Cultural Sustainability (DICS)” model is formulated, combining advanced digital applications with indigenous cultural principles to achieve sustainable preservation. This research ultimately demonstrates that digital technology should not be regarded merely as a technical instrument, but rather as an innovative and strategic mechanism for safeguarding the tangible and intangible cultural values of Bali. It is expected that these outcomes may provide practical guidance for the formulation of digital-oriented conservation policies and implementation strategies within other regions possessing rich cultural heritage. properly, and there are gaps in the connection between units.

Abstract

This article constitutes a philosophical attempt to initiate an interdisciplinary conversation between philosophy and architecture by taking Roma Toloh of the Bajo-Wuring tribe as its central subject of inquiry. Roma Toloh embodies the local ecological wisdom of the Bajo-Wuring people in sustaining and nurturing their relationship with the sea. The study aims to identify the ecological values embodied in the architectural form of Roma Toloh and to explore its impacts on the marine ecosystem. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study incorporated field observation and in-depth interviews. Informants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. The research findings indicate that the Bajo people residing in Wuring, Sikka Regency, Flores, possesses a conscious awareness to nurture the marine ecosystem, with the Roma Toloh serving as a potent symbol of their unity with the sea. However, this consciousness is not corresponding proportionally with the current environmental conditions surrounding their settlements. The increasing scarcity of traditional, natural building materials, coupled with the modernization of construction materials are exerting negative impacts on the Roma Toloh, the ecological wisdom it embodies, and the surrounding environment. The shift from traditional to modern building materials has contributed to the degradation of the residential environment and the erosion of the ecological values inherent in the Roma Toloh. The quality of the marine ecosystem has deteriorated as a result of the shifting. Collaborative efforts between local government, the Wuring community, and neighboring societal communities are thus imperative to ensure the preservation of the Bajo-Wuring cultural identity and the Wuring marine ecosystem.
