Abstract

Contemporary architectural practice increasingly exhibits fragmented approaches in which analysis and design, as well as visual, technical, symbolic, and social aspects, are treated as separate domains. This fragmentation reveals the absence of an epistemic framework capable of maintaining traceability between architectural claims and their underlying evidence. This article addresses this epistemic gap by proposing KEPKA (Kerangka Epistemik Properti Komposisi Arsitektur) as a regulatory framework for structured architectural reflection. KEPKA is developed through a critical synthesis of architectural theories concerned with the interrelations of function, form, experience, and meaning. It emphasises the traceability of architectural claims by grounding interpretations in elements, properties, and spatial composition. Rather than functioning as a single theory, design method, or normative value system, KEPKA operates as a reflective epistemic tool applicable across issues, methods, and paradigms without interfering with scientific claims. Structured into five analytical levels, ranging from elements and compositional relations to operational and discursive meaning, KEPKA enables an assessment of the degree to which an architectural reading or design is architecturally justified. This article argues that KEPKA does not aim to verify the truth of meaning, but to ensure that meaning remains inseparable from architectural evidence, while simultaneously opening a dialogical space for engagement with diverse theoretical traditions within architectural scholarship.

Abstract

The Laweyan district in Surakarta is formally designated as a cultural heritage precinct in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Culture and Tourism No. PM.03/PW.007/MKP/2010. Its distinctiveness is articulated through its historical significance, morphological characteristics, and socio-cultural dimensions. Between 1521 and 1546, Laweyan functioned as a perdikan territory, an autonomous enclave exempt from royal taxation, under the leadership of Kyai Ageng Henies. Within this historical framework, the Laweyan community developed a reputation for economic self-sufficiency, particularly as batik entrepreneurs, thereby reinforcing its contemporary identity as a Batik Village. The central issue addressed in this study is the absence of a comprehensive framework to guide the revitalization of the area, a condition that raises serious concerns regarding its sustainable development as a site of considerable historical value. Accordingly, the objective of this research is to formulate a set of revitalization guidelines for heritage areas that can function as a normative reference, ensuring that future interventions remain consistent with the regulatory provisions established in Law No. 11 of 2010. Methodologically, this study adopts a grounded theory approach. The collected data are systematically categorized and coded, followed by interpretative analysis grounded in the theoretical constructs of preservation, conservation, and revitalization. The findings of this research are intended to provide a structured guideline for the revitalization of the Laweyan district, thereby supporting its continued protection and development as a designated cultural heritage site.

Abstract

This research is grounded in the prevailing inclination within studies of Balinese palace architecture to interpret the Nawa Sanga cosmology chiefly as a symbolic framework of orientation, while its function as a governing apparatus in organizing hierarchical access and sacred spatial domains has not been thoroughly explored. In reality, the configuration of sacred space within a palace is shaped not solely by cosmological gradients but also by genealogical structures (pasemetonan), which establish ritual legitimacy, authority, and rights to spatial occupation. This study seeks to reconceptualize Nawa Sanga as a socio-spatial governance system that organizes hierarchical access and sacred space within Puri Ageng Blahbatuh and Puri Kaleran Jelantik. The research adopts a qualitative multiple case study methodology, incorporating spatial observation, architectural documentation, in-depth interviews, and genealogical analysis. The results reveal that hierarchical access and sacred spatial organization are generated through the interaction of three interconnected layers: cosmological orientation as a normative framework, genealogical structure as the foundation of legitimacy, and spatial mechanisms, such as thresholds and circulation patterns, as instruments of regulation. These findings affirm that Nawa Sanga operates not merely as a symbolic construct but as a regulatory system that sustains and reproduces social hierarchy through stratified control over access to sacred space.

Abstract

This research proposes a new Socio-Ecological-Technological Integrated Analysis Framework (SETIA) for sustainable tourism road network route prediction and planning. This paper constructs a multidimensional analysis model which integrates social, ecological and technological factors into sustainability analysis. This paper uses machine learning method to analyze tourism road data and apply SETIA framework into Malaysian tourism road network cases. Results show that SETIA framework has higher prediction accuracy than traditional method in assessing three-way interaction effects of electric vehicle use, road condition and traffic congestion. This study provides theoretical reference and guide for the sustainable tourism road network planning in Malaysia, which is of great significance to promote the development of sustainable tourism and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
