Abstract

The research on metadiscourse formerly examined the language tools used to construct a speech without looking further at the contextual-related resource. This study aims to investigate the textual and interpersonal meanings of Fred Rogers' commencement speech in Hyland's metadiscourse by examining interactive and interactional metadiscourse resources combined with Salager-Meyer's pragmatic hedges categorization. This present qualitative study adopted Bogdan et al. (1975) research design. The data were taken from Marquette University website on April 9th, 2022, and validated through documentation and audit trails. Afterward, they were identified and analyzed using Hyland's metadiscourse and Salager-Meyer pragmatic hedges framework in the interactive data analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results revealed that self-mentions are the most significant interactional resource, reaching 47.39% of the total metadiscourse found in Fred Rogers' speech, and 30.33% are transition markers from interactive resources. In addition, the most significant hedge categories are shields and approximators that share the same accumulation at 35.29%. It showed that most words represent the speaker's intention to attract the audience's attention and emphasize his message by portraying the speaker's identity, attitude, and personal doubt. These results contribute to an understanding of metadiscourse markers and pragmatic hedges used for involving the speaker as the major constructor of discourse produced through the selection of markers in his utterances. The implications of this study can be a reference in selecting the linguistic markers to build effective communication for engaging the audience through discourse.

Abstract

In the world of parenting, there are various parenting styles. Each of these parenting styles has its own impact on children. Parenting style can be reflected in the way parents communicate with children. This study focuses on the relationship between authoritarian or permissive parenting styles on aspects of language, especially expressive speech acts. A qualitative descriptive pragmatic approach is applied in this study. The data in this study are in the form of textual sources from the film "Nanti Kita Cerita Tentang Hari Ini". The film was chosen because it has a family theme and presents parent-child conflicts that can be examined in terms of parenting and linguistic aspects. Data was collected using the observing and note-taking method and then analyzed using the analytical technique introduced by Spradley (2016). This analysis applies theory from Yule (1996) regarding expressive speech act and Baumrind (1971) regarding parenting styles, especially authoritarian or permissive. In the film, it is proven that the authoritarian parenting style has various negative impacts on children in their mental health later. Meanwhile, the permissive parenting style impact that causes children to depend on their parents is not found in the film. This is shown by children who instead want to prove to their parents that they can be independent and have the right to decide for themselves what they want.

Abstract

This research examined the poetry written by Nizar Qabbani in Arabic, which has been translated into Bahasa Indonesia. The investigation was related to how the expression of resistance from the source language into the target language can be used as one of the main media against a regime. This study used a qualitative approach. The data in this study are language units in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences, in the source language (Arabic) and the target language (Bahasa Indonesia). Data analysis used the Spradley model, namely domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural analysis to find the relationship and meaning between the expression of resistance in poetry and aspects of micro and macro translation. The findings attempted to map what translation techniques appear in the expression of resistance in political poetry and how the tendencies of these techniques are at a macro level, whether the translation technique is more oriented towards the source language or the target language. The contribution of the research theoretically tries to show that literary works are an effective and elegant medium in conveying criticism of the government. The study of translation techniques should consider a particular literary genre, as literary genres influence the use and selection of translation techniques.

Abstract

Research into willingness to communicate in English has gained momentum in second/foreign language learning recently. Applied linguists have argued for the factors that may hinder learners to communicate in English. However, although extensive studies on willingness to communicate in English have been carried out, the studies have much focused on university and high school students. As a result, very little is known about the hindrances of students' willingness to communicate in English in the context of vocational high schools. To fill such a lacuna, this study was designed to explore hindrances of willingness to communicate in English among Indonesian vocational high school students. In-depth interviews were conducted with 6 participants from three Indonesian vocational high schools with regard to the hindrances they encountered when communicating in English. To analyze the data, we employed Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. Findings from the study suggest four emerging themes: 1) lack of self-confidence, 2) presence of fear, 3) teacher's teaching style, 4) and vocabulary provision. Our study reveals that, even though the participants are aware of the problems, situated supports in the forms of out-of-class English communications are needed to help solve their hindrances in English communications. Pedagogical implications of this study are offered at the end of this article.

Abstract

Albeit the research on African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as nonstandard form of English spoken by African Americans in lower socioeconomic classes has been documented by many scholars, little is known about it from the perspective of Wolfram's theory. To fill this lacuna, the present study aims to elucidate the grammatical elements of Eminem's lyrics song in the album "The Eminem Show." This single case study showcased 32 lyrics song from Eminem's album with that seven grammatical features such as copula/auxiliary absence, the invariant be, the remote been, the subject verb agreement, the negation, the question formation, and the nominals. The findings found that negation is the most common grammatical features whereas the invariant be is the least common. The findings indicated that songs serve as a platform for asserting identity and criticizing diverse social, cultural, political, and economic issues. The performers are free to improvise in accordance with the tendencies and interests of the critic. Thus, the song can serve both to identify the current social crisis and as a catalyst for the crisis itself.
