Abstract

Introduction: Community-based programs and services for older adults play a critical role in addressing their health and social needs in aging populations. This study aimed to examine the level of community support available for older adults, assess the accessibility and availability of implemented programs and services, and determine their satisfaction with government-provided benefits.Methods: A descriptive-correlational research design was employed involving 110 older adults selected through purposive sampling from a rural municipality in Zamboanga Sibugay, Philippines. Data were collected using validity- and reliability-tested questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rho correlation.Results: The majority of respondents were 65–69 years old, female, married, and relied on a pension as their primary source of income. Programs and services for older adults were generally perceived as always available. However, respondents agreed that deteriorating health, lengthy procedures for processing documents, limited initiative to approach community leaders and authorities, and difficulty remembering program dates and schedules sometimes posed barriers to accessing these services. At the 0.05 level of significance, the availability of programs and services for older adults was significantly associated with perceived health impacts (p = 0.003).Conclusion: These findings suggest that the implementation and availability of community-based programs and services for older adults are positively related to perceived health outcomes and highlight the need to sustain and further strengthen such initiatives in rural communities.

Abstract

Introduction: Anatomical variations in the Eustachian tube (ET) are known to contribute to ET dysfunction, which plays a significant role in the development and persistence of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). Evaluating ET remains a challenge due to its complex anatomy and location. Our study aim to investigate the relationship of anatomical variations of ET with the risk of developing CSOM without cholesteatomaMethods: A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted using the data from the ORL-HNS Department of Dr. Moewardi hospital. The HRCT scans were performed in the Department of Radiology at the same institution between January 2024 and March 2025. The measurements of Tubotympanic Angle (TTA), Pretympanic Diameter (PTD), Eustachian Tube Angle (ETA), and Eustachian Tube Length (ETL), were performed by an experienced radiologists familiar with temporal bone imaging. Paired and independent T-Tests were applied for analyzing the relationship between variables and the significance was set at p < 0.05.Results: Thirty patients were included in this study, ranging from 18 to 70 years old. Statistically significant differences were observed between the affected and unaffected ears in terms of TTA, PTD, and ETA. The affected ear had greater TTA value, shorter PTD and smaller ETA values as compared to the unaffected ear (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Anatomical variations of ET, particularly TTA, PTD, and ETA, contribute to an increased risk of CSOM, suggest that ET anatomy measurement may be beneficial for managing CSOM.

Abstract

Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in biofilm-associated and chronic infections, has exposed critical limitations of conventional antibiotics. Biofilms enhance bacterial persistence through structural protection, metabolic adaptation, and regulated resistance mechanisms, necessitating alternative therapeutic strategies. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)–derived secretomes have emerged as a promising cell-free antimicrobial platform capable of modulating both bacterial behavior and host responses.Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and GARUDA databases to identify studies evaluating antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and resistance-modifying effects of MSC-derived secretomes. Eligible studies included in vitro, ex vivo, and preclinical models assessing bacterial viability, biofilm dynamics, and resistance-associated pathways. Due to methodological heterogeneity, findings were qualitatively synthesized.Results: The literature search identified 4,949 potentially relevant articles from PubMed, Google Scholar, and GARUDA databases. After duplicate removal and eligibility screening, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the qualitative synthesis. The selected studies demonstrated that MSC-derived secretomes suppress bacterial growth, disrupt biofilm formation and mature biofilm stability, restore antibiotic susceptibility in tolerant populations, and modulate resistance-associated gene expression. Key antimicrobial components included antimicrobial peptides, extracellular vesicles, cysteine proteases, and immunomodulatory mediators that exert both direct antibacterial and host-mediated regulatory effects.Conclusion: MSC derived secretomes act as systems-level antimicrobial modulators rather than conventional bactericidal agents. By targeting bacterial viability, biofilm architecture, resistance pathways, and host immunity simultaneously, they represent a promising adjunctive strategy for managing biofilm-driven and drug-resistant infections in the post-antibiotic era.

Abstract

Introduction: Sepsis-associated ischemia–reperfusion injury amplifies oxidative stress and inflammation, driving organ dysfunction. Moringa oleifera contains flavonoids, isothiocyanates (e.g., MIC-1) and other phytochemicals with reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities that may mitigate these processesMethods: This study was conducted as a narrative literature review. Relevant articles were searched in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus using keywords related to sepsis, reperfusion injury, oxidative stress, inflammation, and Moringa oleifera. Articles published between 2016 and 2026, available as open-access full texts in English or Indonesian, were included. Selected studies were screened by title, abstract, and full text, and the findings were analyzed descriptively.Results: Moringa oleifera contains a wide range of bioactive compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, fatty acids, and isothiocyanates, which are widely recognized for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds may help reduce oxidative stress primarily by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), lowering malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidaseConclusion: moringa oleifera shows reproducible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in animal models of sepsis-related reperfusion injury, supporting its potential as an adjunctive therapy to reduce reperfusion-mediated organ damage. Well-designed clinical trials and standardized extract/dose protocols are required to establish efficacy and safety in humans.
