Abstract

Teachers and parents often complain about the negative affect of students onmathematics learning at schools, but there has been no official report on this matter. Thisstudy was intended to investigate the status of the affective aspect of the result of theschools mathematics education. The affects measured were attitude, interest, motivation, anxiety, self-concept, extrinsic appreciation, intrinsic appreciation, operational appreciation, belief about mathematics, belief about self, belief about mathematics teaching, and belief about social context. The subjects were the first year students of the Faculty ofMathematics and Sciences of the State University of Yogyakarta (UNY) comprisingstudents of eight departments i.e. Department of: Biology, Biology Education, Chemistry,Chemistry Education, Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Physics, and PhysicsEducation. The instrument was adapted from the affective test items developed byWilsonused in the National Longitudinal Study on Mathematics Achievement by the SchoolMathematics Study Group in the USA, and supplemented by test items on beliefsdeveloped based on the McLeod’s classification. The data indicated that the affects wereof either low level or neutral level (neither favorable nor unfavorable for mathematicslesson) except for the belief about mathematics, about mathematics teaching, and aboutsocial context of mathematics.

Abstract

The problem that rose in this research is the teaching ability of new teacherswhich is relatively low. It was shown from: (1) teachers had less ability to make teachingpreparation; (2) teachers had less ability to perform the teaching procedure; (3) teachershad less ability to establish an interpersonal relation harmonically at classroom. Thisresearch is intended to solve the above problems. This research was applied on class 11.4SMU Negeri I Surakarta. The research was a collaborative research which involved seniorteachers of history subject matter and new teachers. Their active involvement in theresearch was enable them to broaden their roles by conducting self-reflection criticallytoward what they did in the class; and based on that reflection, their performance wasimproved. In line with the characteristics of the classroom research, the problem aboveshould be overcome by taking action in the form of directing new teachers. This is basedon the observation result and the interview that the low ability to teaching not only comesfrom the teachers themselves, but also from the less effective supervision. The researchresult shows that after carrying out the actions, the teaching ability has increasedsignificantly, in the turn it brings about a positive effect to the students learning activities.

Abstract

This research is about the study on the effectiveness of inquiry strategy uponstudent's achievement in history subject, dealing with cognitive, affective and creativethinking domains, with student’s entry behaviour, interest in the subject, family backgroundand student's achievement in religion and Pancasila Education as covariates. The inferential analysis such as t-test and anacova were used to test the hypothesis. The result of the testing of the hypothesis revealed that at the level of significance a =0,01, the main hypothesis was accepted. The contribution of student's entry behaviourwas 10,10 %. The study concluded that there was a significant different in student'sachievement using inquiry strategy in the instructional materials and the classicalmethod of teaching. This means that inquiry strategy in the instructional materials wasmore effective than classical learning.

Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to examine the effects of combinationcircuit-plyometric training method and body weight on agility. The method used in thisresearch was a field experiment using the 2x 2 (body weight x paining method) factorialdesigns. Eighty male students of Sport and Health Department of Teacher Training andEducation Faculty, Sebelas Maret University taken by purposive stratified randomsampling, were classified into four cells. The treatment was conducted three times a weekduring eight weeks. Body height and weight were measured with studio meter; agilitywith LSU Agility Obstacle Course, and the scores were recorded with photogate meter.Tests were administered prior to and after the eight week training program. The data wereanalyzed with two-way factorial ANOVA and Newman-Keuls test. The result of ANOVAand Newman-Keuls test from the combination circuit-plyometric skip jump hadsignificantly higher agility than combination circuit-plyometric squad jump trainingmethod. There was better average of increase on normal minus body weight than normalplus. There was significantly interaction into two-way between combination circuitplyometrictraining method and body weight. The group with normal minus body weightthat was trained by combination circuit-plyometric skip jump showed significantly betterresult than other groups.

Abstract

This research presents conversations between guides and tourists duringguiding tours. The data were taken from a larger research on tasks in tour guiding, collected from observations of several tours. The conversations were discussed in termsof how the guide and the tourist developed the topics of the conversations. This paper alsoanalyses problems in the conversations using the framework from Varonis and Gass(1985). They suggest that problems in communication can be identified by looking at the‘trigger’ and the ‘indicator’ of problems in conversations. The analysis of the conversationsindicated that the guide and the tourist in their conversations were activelyengaged in the topic. They gave opinions, contributed to the conversations, and providedinformation to the topic. The analysis also indicated that there were four types ofindicators of communication problems: (1) explicit questions, (2) clarification requests,(3) confirmation checks, and (4) rephrasing.

Abstract

Based on the experiences, many teachers do not feel very successful in teachingstory problems. On the other hand, many students find that story problems are one of themost difficult challenges in mathematics and do not like them. However, there has been noofficial report on the matter, at least in Indonesia. The purpose of the research is toidentify student's errors in doing story problems on fractions, both decimal fractions andusual fractions. The research was conducted in Kota Surakarta, involving students ingrade 6 for twelve elementary schools. Eight essay story problems on fractions weregiven to those students. Then, data about the student's errors in doing story problemswere collected by looking over the student's work thoroughly. After analyzing the data, the research concluded that about half of the students did not answer story problemscorrectly. The data also revealed that story problems involving usual fractions were moredifficult than story problems involving decimal fractions for the students. There was atrend that story problems which include complex calculation were more difficult thanstory problems which include simple calculation.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out: (1) the correlation between the achievement motivation and the work achievement of the UNS employees; (2) the autonomy of the UNS employees in their work; (3) the adaptation of UNS employees and their work achievement. The research used descriptive correlational method. The technique of collecting data was questionnaire. The data analysis was done by using descriptive statistics and correlational technique. The result of the research shows that there is no correlation between: (1) autonomy and working performance; (2) achievement motivation and working performance; (3) adaptation and working performance; (4) achievement motivation and autonomy; (5) achievement motivation and adaptation but there is correlation between adaptation and autonomy of the UNS employees

Abstract

In order to develop their academic quality, it is very important for UNS'lecturers to improve English competency. It needs a conscientious management to reachthe goal of having English competency effectively. Based on the result of the interviewwith the lecturers who attend English course, it was found that there were some obstaclesin carrying out the English course. The data were collected by using questionnaire andinterview. The result of this research showed that there were some obstacles dealing withdeveloping lecturers’ English competency: (1) management factors, the time of Englishcourse activity often overlapped with lecturers' other activities, consequently it causedonly few participants attend the course; (2) the motivation of trainees factor, it showedthat they had low need of achievement. It can be seen fromsome indicators: a) they did notspend time to learn the material outside the classroom; b) they did not study English athome; c) they attended the course without preparation. Therefore the researcher proposedseveral suggestions: (1) it is crucial to improve coordination to hold the course atthe appropriate time; (2) it is necessary to motivate the trainees by giving rewards inconnection with improvement in career or promotion/rank.
