Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know a series of activities in Peh Cun Festival and the meaning of each procession carried out. The festival which is celebrated by Chinese Society in Tangerang has its own cultural and historical values. The Method used in this research is Explanative Qualitative Method with a generative approach that gives a detailed identification of a series of Peh Cun Festival celebrated by the Chinese Society and the meaning of the activity. This research used literature study analysis by comparing and studying several literacies such as textbooks, scientific journals and others related to Peh Cun Festival and the meaning of each process carried out. The results of this research are describes of a series of activities and meanings from the holding of the Peh Cun Festival. The conclusion of this research is The Peh Cun Festival is a summer festival celebrated by the Chinese Society with its own significance preserved as cultural heritage.

Abstract

Corpus semantics examines the words that are used in text and discourse using observations as evidence of meaning. This study aims to investigate the collocations of node ‘vaccine’ based on semantic preference and semantic prosody using the corpus-based approach since the source of data is the corpus data. The qualitative research method is used to find the hypotheses from the corpus data taken from sub-corpus in Covid-19 corpus using Sketch Engine software. This study demonstrates that the node word of ‘vaccine’ in the semantic preference was shown six words related to the Covid-19 corpus. Meanwhile, the category of semantic prosody was displayed four words negative in meaning, and there was two words displayed positive in meaning, the collocations with negative meaning which occur more frequently than positive meaning. Thus, the writer concluded that the author of a reputable journal explained the word ‘vaccine’ with a negative perspective in Covid-19.

Abstract

Trends in lawsuits against violations of UU ITE relate to insults and defamation have increased significantly in the past three years, not least in NTT. Some of the cases in the lawsuit included regional expressions. One of them is the case of UU ITE with the decision number 84/Pid.Sus/2019/PN Olm. With the method of in-depth and documentative interviews, this study aims to reveal the implicature in the subject matter text through the Frank Parker implicature disclosure approach. The result showed that the motivation of speaker using local language expressions can be revealed through direct, indirect, and literal speech acts. In literal speech act, speech and implications have not negation. In direct speech act, speakers have implications to advise speech partners. Whereas indirect speech acts, speakers have implications to threaten the speech partners. The conclusion of this study indicate that local languages are effectively used to touch the personal identity of the speech partner so that they are often used to insult and defame.

Abstract

This article focuses on the formulaic stucture in a popular children’s literature entitled “Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carroll. This is aimed to analyze the formulaic stucture of the novel and the elements that caused the novel to become a popular children’s literature in Victorian era, which is undoubtedly related to the Victorian values in Britain.Formula theory by John G. Cawelti is used to analyze the novel. The story of the novel is about a little girl named Alice who wants to be the queen when she is stranded in another world called Looking Glass after leaning into a mirror in her painting room. Result of this research shows that Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass” is written using adventure typologyshown through a hero with a goal to reach. The novel also uses fantasy and Victorian era setting to support the suspense.Furthermore, what made the story popular in the era is the need of escape provided by the novel for Victorian children through Alice’s adventure.

Abstract

Persuasive power in the language of advertising can be reflected in the structure of words, phrases, or clauses in the contents of written or spoken advertisements. Most ad text uses verbal and nonverbal symbols to convey the intent and purpose. The use of language in advertising is adjusted to the needs and to achieve the purpose of the ad. Linguistic research specifically looking at appraisal devices in culinary text advertisements on the internet has an important role in uncovering the ideology of their makers. Through appraisal device studies, especially modalities in ad text on the internet media will be able to know and understand the attitude of advertisers towards the reality that surrounds them, namely their assessment of the advertised goods and the assessment of their environment. This qualitative research refers to Sudaryanto's opinion in providing data and data analysis. Provision of data using the method of referencing and note taking. Data analysis methods and techniques use the method of sharing with basic techniques, namely techniques for direct elements; while the advanced technique uses the technique of fade and dressing techniques. Through a series of analyzes, it was found that there was a use of modality: intentional, epistemic, deontic, and dynamic in the culinary ad text typical of Semarang.

Abstract

Kebumen batik is not as widely known as batik from Jogja, Surakarta, and Pekalongan. This is due to several factors, such as marketing, age, and production imbalances. One way to preserve Kebumen batik is by describe and maintain lexicons and cultural meanings contained in batik in Gemeksekti Village, Kebumen Regency. Gemeksekti Village is one of the batik centers in Kebumen which has been named the village of Kebumen batik. The method used in writing this article is a descriptive qualitative method with literature review techniques. Based on the data obtained, there were 143 batik lexicons. The lexicons were 64 batik lexicons based on tools and materials, 31 batik lexicons based on the batik process, 48 batik lexicons based on motives. Batik motifs in Kebumen not only have philosophical value, but their depiction is also based on artistic value. Cultural values from several Kebumen batik motifs can be found in gringsing, sirikit, limaran, and ukel motifs. The lexicon findings can be made in to dictionaries and books containing batik motifs, explanation of motifs, pictures, and the history of Kebumen batik and other media. Both of them may be used as a means for introduction to the wider community and the preservation of Kebumen batik.

Abstract

A communicative code plays a main role in every conversation. The aim is to make a communicative goal in every situation. In this digital era, people tend to make something interesting to attract people’s attention. Namely Podcast, is one of the programs in digital platform that been used as the media to share everything in audio output. In Podcast, the host uses code-switching to make the communication livelier and sometimes to emphasize the statements or questions. Therefore, the host and the guest will have a very communicative interaction along the interview. This study aims to analysed the situational goal in a Podcast which host uses English as his switching code. The situational goal can be seen from the type of code-switching that the host used connected to the type of illocutionary forces at the speech act level.  The data are recorded and transcribed from several episodes of the Podcast. The result shows that code-switching as the media speech is deliberately use as a very functional code to reach the situational goal.
