Abstract

Research on the extraction of cadmium(II) ion has been performed using the emulsion liquid membrane technique. This research used laboratory experimental method using benzoyl acetone as a carrier, kerosene as a membrane, nitric acid solution as an internal phase, span 80 and span 20 as a surfactant, and cadmium(II) solution as a sample. The present study was conducted to determine the optimum conditions of cadmium(II) ion extraction in solutions comprising variations in surfactant concentration of spans 80 and span 20 mixtures (1.5–3.5%) and variations in the ratio of emulsion/external phase (1:5–1:7). Determination of remaining of cadmium(II) ion concentration in the sample was analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometer at 519 nm wavelength. The results showed that the concentration of mixed surfactants (span 80 and span 20) which resulted in a maximum percent of extraction was 2.5% with 60.11% extraction percentage. In addition, the volume ratio of the emulsion/external phase gave a maximum extraction percentage at a ratio of 1:5.5 with an extraction percent of 78.03%.

Abstract

Banana fruit is a fruit that contains many nutrients. One of that is b-carotene, b-carotene is a provitamin that plays an important role in the formation of vitamin A. This study aimed to determine the levels of β-carotene in raja and kepok bananas. This research used a qualitative and quantitative method, which is the qualitative method using TLC while the quantitative method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The TLC results obtained that Rf b-carotene comparison was 0.97 cm, Rf of banana raja extract was 0.96 cm and banana kepok extract was 0.97 cm. Based on the UV-Vis spectrophotometry result, b-carotene content of raja banana fruit was 0.222 mg/100 grams while the kepok banana fruit was 0.261 mg/100 grams, therefore the highest level was banana kepok.

Abstract

Analysis of caffeine level in local coffee powder that circulates in Palu city have been done. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of caffeine in local coffee powder, which is engaged in several markets in the city of Palu. Levels of caffeine in the study will be compared with the standard caffeine content according to the SNI 01-3542-2004, i.e. 0.45-2% w/w. The method used for qualitative analysis was the thin layer chromatography and for quantitative analysis was using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The results of qualitative analysis of six local coffee powders A, B, C, D, E, and F showed each a Rf value between 0.32 to 0.40. Levels of caffeine (per 1 g of coffee powder) quantitatively ranging from brand samples A to F were 0.83, 2.06, 1.60, 2.63, 1.29, and 1.72%, respectively, percent level of caffeine of six samples of local powdered coffee, samples A, C, E and F in terms of SNI 01-3542-2004 were between 0.45-2.00% (w/w), while sample B and sample D exceeds 2% were 2.06% and 2.63%.

Abstract

Avocado seed contains high level of starch and it can be used as one of the raw materials for bioethanol. This study aimed to determine the influence of variation concentration of tape starter toward bioethanol level in the fermentation process of avocado (persea americana Mill.) seed. Some process on this research were delignification with 4% NaOH, hydrolysis with 12% HCl, and fermentation with various concentrations of yeast tape (saccharomyces cerevisiae) ie 10%, 20% and 30% of substrate volume for 5 days. Bioethanol level was determined by using alcoholmeter. The highest bioethanol level was obtained in the addition of yeast tape as much as 30% of substrate that was an equal to 32.65% with density of 1.0029 g/mL.

Abstract

Fungi is primary microorganism which produced cellulase enzyme. Cellulase was catalyzed cellulose from plants or organic waste in enzymatic reaction to be glucose, cellobiose and short polysaccharide. Cellulolytic fungi were isolated from Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu (GSKBB) biosphere reserve. GSKBB is a natural peat swamp forest, with a peat bed reaching up to 9.2 m. Peat swamp forest is a potential source for new species of fungi which produced cellulase in low pH and very good activity because peat swamp forest had been many cellulose and acid pH. Fungi strain was assigned as RH01 at Aspergillus for genus based on microscopy analysis. Index cellulolytic of RH01 was 2.31 and cellulase activity had values of 0.0125 U/mL.

Abstract

Neem plant is a widely used in agriculture as green fertilizer, pesticides and insecticides. People usually use the leaves as for lowering blood sugar, skin diseases, preventing infection, and reducing itching. This study aims to identify and determine tannins levels containing in neem leaves extracts. This study applied extraction by maceration method using 2 different solvents, water and ethanol. Tannin is a metabolite secondary compound belong to phenolic compound groups which oxidized easily by strong oxidization agent (potassium permanganate) so then its determination utilized permanganate method (Lowenthal-Procter). The results showed that neem leaves in 250 mL water solvent contains 0.55% of tannin, while in 250 mL ethanol solvent and concentration of 96% contains 0.27% of tannin.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels in pare (Momordica charantia L) fruits. Samples were obtained from Boyaoge and Sidera Palu, Central Sulawesi. Analyzing calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels in pare used the Spectrodirect instrument. The analysis results obtained the average concentration values of the calcium in the samples of pare from Boyaoge and Sidera were 6.0 mg/L and 8.3 mg/L, respectively, while the average concentration values of the phosphorus in the samples were 4.3 mg/L and 6.5 mg/L, respectively. These results showed that the higher concentration of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) in pare fruit was obtained from Sidera.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine protein and carbohydrate levels contained in waste of banana kepok (Musa paradisiaca Normalis) trees. Samples were taken from Mpanau Sigi Central Sulawesi. This study used Kjeldahl method in determining protein level, and anthrone method in determining reducing sugar level. The analysis results obtained in the hard layer of banana tree are 3.05% of protein level and 6.75% of carbohydrate level, while in the soft layer of banana tree are 0.08% of protein level and 4.75% of carbohydrate level, respectively. This study concluded that protein and carbohydrate levels obtained from the hard layer of banana kepok trees waste is higher, than literatures.

Abstract

Rambutan peel is one source of biocharcoal production to adsorb metal ions because of the potential of cellulose content. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of biocharcoal from rambutan peel as well as to determine biocharcoal adsorption to zinc and copper based on the variation of biocharcoal weight and metal ions concentrations. The method used in this study was a laboratory experiment, and metals were analyzed using spectrophotometer spectroDirect. The results showed the moisture and ash levels of the biocharcoal were 0.4% and 5.4%, respectively. The optimum weight of biocharcoal to adsorb Zn and Cu ions was 40 mg with their percentage adsorption of 98.81% and 98.94%, respectively. The optimum concentration adsorption of biocharcoal to Zn ions was 40 ppm with the percentage adsorption of 98.32%, while for the Cu ions was 60 ppm with the percentage adsorption of 98.25%.
