Abstract

The aim of this study is to lower the value quality parameters of used cooking oil to reach the national industry standards using adsorbent of noni (morinda citrifolia L.) fruit as well as to determine the optimum concentration (% w/w) of noni in increasing quality of used cooking oil. The parameters in this study are the water content, free fatty acids, colour and density. The method used to determine the water content and free fatty acid levels were the gravimetric method and acid-base titration, while determination of the colour and density used UV-Vis spectrophotometer and pycnometer. The concentration of noni adsorbent in the oil refining process varied ie 12%, 15%, 18%, 21%, and 24%. The results showed that the water content, free fatty acids, and the density decrease with an increase in adsorbent. The oil colourwas brighter with increasing noni fruit adsorbent used. The study showed that the noni fruit adsorbent can lower the value quality parameters of used cooking oil, and only the density from the four parameters did not meet ISO standard. The concentration weight per weight (% w/w) optimum noni fruit was 24%.

Abstract

Moringa (moringa oleifera lamk) is a nutritious plant that can cure various diseases. Part of this plant such as leaves, roots, flowers, and fruits serve as a traditional medicine. The aim of this study is to determine the inhibitory of extract of moringa fruit on the growth of the fungus candida albicans. The extract of moringa fruit is made by using several solvents such as distilled water, ethanol and hexane. Suspension of the candida albicans obtained from Clinical Laboratory, Palu, Central Sulawesi. Suspension of the candida albicans is synchronized with Mc. Farland solution. The fungus test uses a pitting method. The results showed that inhibition of extract of moringa fruit on the growth of the fungus candida albicans with solvents of distilled water provides greater results as compared with ethanol and hexane. Based on the results of the observation, the percentage of inhibition of the extract of moringa fruit on the growth of the fungus candida albicans with various solvents are 100% for distilled water, 59.99% for ethanol and 6.97% for hexane. The result of phytochemical screening test showed that the moringa fruit contains alkaloids, flavonoids and steroids.

Abstract

This research was conducted using cooperative learning model think pair share an computing media and the atomic structure chosen as it is abstract. The use of models of learning chemistry applied these days make the student seen as passive listeners in teaching and learning process. This study aims to improve students’ learning outcomes in chemistry using cooperative learning model Think Pair Share and computational media. The population in this study were tenth grade student of MAN Biau academic year 2013/2014 with a sample of the class XC as the experimental class (implementing cooperative learning model based media computing TPS) and XB class as the control class (without implementing cooperative learning model TPS – Based media computing). The result showed that the mean score on the experimental class = 70 and the control class = 53 with normal distribution and homogeneous variance. Based on the t test testing hypothesis on right side test, the t test obtained = 5.57 > t table = 1,68 with a significance level (α) = 0.05. The results showed that the learning outcomes of the students in experimental class using cooperativ learning model based media Think Pair Share computing was better than the control class on the atomic structure material (H0 rejected H1 accepted).

Abstract

Forest onion is a plant that is widely used as a traditional medicine and natural antioxidants. The aim of this study is to determine the extract of the forest onion that can inhibit the growth of the fungus candida albicans and to compare the inhibitory of extract of the forest onion (eleutherine palmifolia (L.) merr) by using different solvents, namely ethanol and distilled water which is carried out by the method of pitting. Suspension of the fungus candida albicanswas obtained from Clinical Laboratory Palu, Central Sulawesi. The results of research obtained that the inhibition of extract of the forest onion on growth of the fungus candida albicanswith ethanol was greater than with distilled water, the percentace was 65.44% and 54.78% for each solvents. It can be concluded that extract of the forest onion has the inhibitory on the growth of the fungus candida albicans.

Abstract

Mercury ion extraction has been done using emulsion liquid membrane technique a research. The aim of the study is to determine the optimal conditions at the extraction process of mercury ion with research variables, namely variations of the surfactant concentration and the volume ratio of emulsion and external phase (Ve:Veks). In this study, the sample was 20 mg/L of Hg2+ ions in concentration. The concentration of mercury ions remaining in the sample after extraction were analyze using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 490 nm using ditizon as complexation. The optimum condition far varying concentrations surfactant was 2% and the volume ratio of emulsion (Ve) and external phase (Veks) was 1:5 with the percentage of extraction respectively 47.65% and 56.80%.

Abstract

The learning method applied on chemistry study nowadays is still one-way; students act as listeners and are not active on learning processes in the classroom. The goal to be achieved on this research was to determine the effect of cooperative leraning model make a match type on compounds and chemical equations naming topic towards the students’ learning outcome and to their critical thinking skill of X grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Dampelas consisting of 6 classes. 2 classes were taken as samples by purposive sampling; 28 students of class XE as control class and 28 students of class XF as the experimental class. The research instruments used were tests and observation sheet. Descriptive and inferential statistics analysis methods were used asthe data analysis technique. Statistics analysis of right side t-test was used for testing the research data. The average score of learning outcome achieved as the research result were 78.96 of experimental class and 60.92 of control class and the average score of critical thinking skill were 74.75 for the experimental class and 65.75 for the control class. The research result showed that the use of cooperative learning model make a match type on compounds and chemical equation naming topic made the students’ learning outcome and crictical thinking skill better.

Abstract

The research has been done concerning the adsorption of biological charcoal from kapok banana peel onPb and Zn metal from solution. This study aimed to determine the ability of a banana peel charcoal to adsorbPb and Zn metal from its solution. The method used in this research was a laboratory experiment by using activated charcoal of banana peel as adsorbent ofPb and Zn metal. The absorbed Pb and Zn were measured by using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The results showed that the optimum pH of adsorption of Pb and Zn was obtained at pH 4 and pH 6 respectively with the concentration of Pb and Zn metal was 19.40 mg/g and 21.17 mg/g respectively.

Abstract

Snowball throwing learning model is a modification of aquastion technique. This technique is focused on the ability to formulate questions which are combined in a game called snowball throwing. SMILES is a simple chemical notation comprehensive where the scructures of molecules can be found by using ASCII character which representing atom and bond symbol. The study aim is to determine the influence of snowball throwing assisted learning model SMILES code on hydrocarbon material to the learning outcomes of students clas XI in SMA Negeri 5 Palu. This study is experimental with pretest and posttest control group design, in which the samples are students of class XI IPA 2 (n=33) as experimental group while students of clas XI IPA 4 (n=32) as control group. The testing data used t-test statistical analysis one side (right) with pre-requisite test, normality test and homogeneity. The result of data analysis are the score of X1 experiment class is 73.81 with standard deviation is 8.19 while score of X2 control group is 65 with standard deviation is 14.36. Based on testing hypothesis result that tcounted>ttable is 3.05 > 1.67 with significance level 0.05 and confidence level = 63. The results show that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted then it is concluded that the application of Snowball Throwing assisted learning model SMILES code on hydrocarbon material positively influence to the learning outcomes of students class XI in SMA Negeri 5 Palu.

Abstract

Red chili is one of the food susceptible to decay. It caused by its high water content and so it causes to keep power of red chili abbreviated. Jicama (pachyrizuserosus (L.) Urb.) can act as a natural preservative for red chili due to the saponin compounds contained there in. This study aimed to prove the use of jicama extract as a natural preservative for red chili and to determine the most effective concentration of jicama extract as a natural preservative. The methods used in this study were a maceration to prepare the extract of jicama, and an iodimetric titration to determine the levels of vitamin C before and after curing. The results showed that jicama extract can be used as a natural preservative for red chili. The most effective concentration of jicama extract in preserving the red chili was 4% with preservation durability of red chili for 14 days in which the smallest level of vitamin C decreased among other concentrations, i.e. from 84.47 mg/100 g to 75.13 mg/100 g of material.
