Abstract

Mastitis is the major disease and the most costly disease of the dairy industry worldwide. One of the mastitis control programs that until now has been carried out and proven to be quite effective is the teat dipping method as a form of prevention. Various methods and uses of teat dipping solutions have been widely used and used for this purpose such as iodine, potassium permanganate, chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine gluconate chlorine, iodophor, sodium hypochlorite, lactic acid, phenolics and Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonic Acid (DDBSA). Pre milking and post milking teat disinfection have been recommended widely by veterinarians and adopted by dairy producers in increasing numbers. This procedure is simple to perform, economical, and effective in controlling contagious mastitis pathogens. More recently, teat dipping in association with good udder preparation reduced the rate of intramammary infections by environmental pathogens. This paper aims to provide a brief review of the benefits of teat dipping as a method of controlling the incidence of mastitis in dairy cows. Keywords: mastitis, teat dipping, pathogens, intramammary infections

Abstract

The increasing demand for peanut-based snacks has an impact on increasing peanut shell waste in Indonesia. The cellulose content in peanut shells is still relatively high, so it requires a long period for natural degradation. Though the waste can be converted and utilized in other forms, as a prebiotic. This far, inulin has been used as a prebiotic source. Products with inulin fortification have high prices, so we need to look for other cheaper ingredients. This research was conducted to test the ability of peanut shell waste extract as a prebiotic substitute material. To achieve this goal, peanut shells were extracted for cellulose. Streptococcus thermophiles probiotic bacterial growth test performed with a completely randomized design (CRD) pattern. The treatment factor used was crude extracts concentration of peanut shell waste. 0% was for the negative control, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and inulin were for positive control. Observation parameters in the research were the identification of colony morphology, gram staining, and growth curve analysis. The results of the study showed the crude extract of peanut shell waste affected Streptococcus thermophiles growth rate, even though it was not equivalent to the results of inulin treatment. The addition of coarse peel extract (40%) showed the most optimal growth curve pattern. The cellulose from peanut waste used as a carbon source for bacteria growth. Keywords: Peanut shell, prebiotics, Streptococcus thermophilus

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract               This study aims to increase duck population in their origin distribution area Sempu, Ngadirojo Village, Secang, Magelang district. The increasing is evaluated by Magelang duck reproduction performance in this area. Ngadirojo was the origin area of duck Magelang distribution but unfortunately the population has begun to decline due to the presence of commercial farmers who sell this type of duck out of the region. Most of the people in Ngadirojo also maintain semi-intensive methods so that reproduction and maintenance performance is poorly controlled due to low performance including reproduction. The data evaluated includes mature age, mature sex weight, egg laying, egg production per week, egg fertility, egg hatchability, incubation time, mating method, and reproductive technology that had been applied. Data collection was grouped on intensive and semi-intensive farms in Sempu sub-village, Ngadirojo village, Secang sub-district, Magelang regency. Evaluation has been carried out through the manufacture of histological preparations for female reproductive ducks of production age (6-12 months) on intensive and semi-intensive farms. Reproductive performance data were analyzed descriptively and data on histology preparations were displayed as support. The results obtained by farms in the Sempu sub-village are semi-intensive duck breeders, ducks are carried out in to the rice fields at certain hours. No intensive breeders were found in the Sempu hamlet, therefore comparative data as intensive breeders were obtained in the Tempuran area, Magelang district. Based on the survey, Magelang duck farmers in Sempu hamlet had normal reproductive performance but when evaluated through histology preparations it was found that the reproductive organ tissue of Magelang ducks which were intensively maintained were more productive. Key words : Magelang duck, histological preparation, Secang sub-district, Reproduction.

Abstract

Abstract

Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) known as Gumboro is a high frequently found virus that has an acute trait. It occurs on broiler chickens and easily transmitted among them especially during the maintenance period. The targets of this virus are the cell in the bursa of fabricius and various lymphoid organs. Therefore, the IBD virus infection causes interference to the immune system. Moreover, the observation of clinical symptoms showed that in the Arjasari 2 stall found the changes in clinical symptoms on broiler chickens. It covers weakness and lethargy, decreased appetite, hanging wings, whitish watery diarrhea, and dirty cloaca. Besides, during the maintenance period found a high mortality rate. Based on the results of a necropsy, several organs have changed in broiler chickens aged 17-33 days. Changes in the bursa of fabricius experiencing organ hemorrhage air sacs that become inflamed (airsacculitis), and hemorrhages on the heart, thus space indicating an IBD. Results from the study showed that the field methods for diagnosis with a view of the clinical symptoms, the mortality rate, and a necropsy can be used as a method for the field diagnosis of IBD. Changes in the post mortem organ can be used as reinforcement to the clinical diagnosis of IBD, especially changes or damage to the bursa of fabricius.
