In conducting the research, there were two components expected to be improved, they were improving the students’ speaking score and increasing the quality of classroom atmosphere of teaching speaking. This study employed the collaborative classroom action research and it was done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: (1) planning, (2) action, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. There were five meetings in each cycle; four meetings for the implementation of improvisations in the teaching of speaking and one meeting for conducting speaking test. The instruments used to collect the data were: (1) observation checklist, (2) field-note, (3) a score sheet, and (4) a questionnaire. The result of the research showed that the criteria of success had been reached. There were two aspects determined as the success criteria of the implementation of improvisations in the teaching of speaking; score improvement and classroom atmosphere. The result of speaking test presented that the students had made some progress, the average scores raised from 2.72 in the pre-test, 3.09 in cycle 1 and 3.76 in cycle 2. These scores indicated an increasing ability from being ‘fair’ to being ‘good’. The classroom atmosphere were also increasing positively; the students were actively involved in the teaching and learning process, indicated by 64% participated in cycle 1 and 73.79% participated in cycle 2. The students were also highly motivated in joining the teaching learning process. They cooperated, asked, responded, and expressed spontaneously.

Abstract

The Islamic higher educations have an important role in producing the qualified graduates. Therefore, the organization of the Islamic higher educations must be coupled with the quality of learning services. Some institutes and universities are optimizing their learning services, while the others tend to choose different service patterns since there is no standard instrument of the quality of the learning service. This research was conducted to develop an assessment instrument model to measure the learning services in Islamic higher education. This research applied a research and development approach through three stages, namely: pre-development, development, and application of the model. The development of the instrument was done through individual, small group, and large group testing through field tests involving students of Islamic higher education. The instrument model includes the aspects of tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, empathy, and assurance along with the indicators, which is, analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The findings of the research shows that learning assessment instrument model of Islamic higher education developed by integrating some aspects categorized as goodness of fit, which is, proved by Lambda score (λ)> 0,30, ρ-score (p)> 0, 05, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) <0.08, and Goodness of Fit Index (GFI> 0.90). The developed instrument has high validity, while the aspects of learning services meet the requirements and are reliably to assess learning services at Islamic Higher Education

Abstract

This study is designed as a case study and concerned on qualitative data, which reflected what actually happened in the area of case study. The Principal, the English Teachers and Students placed as the key informants. The data gained from the informants by applying in depth interview, questionnaire, documentation and observation. The data are analyzed by employing two methods, those are: descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative. There are two problems in this study that can be seen from two perspectives; syllabus designing and students’ needs analysis. From the perspectives of syllabus designing, the problem arise on defining a syllabus typically as the content standart which is commonly and formally provided by the higher authority (i.e. Ministry of National Education). In evidence, the existence of UN (Ujian Nasional/National Examination) makes teachers come into problems. Moreover, from learners’ needs analysis perspective, teachers define Target Situation Analysis (TSA) mainly as the content of students’ subject matters of their majors rather than students’ linguistic performance after finishing the course. Furthermore, the teachers define the Present Situation Analysis (PSA) mainly as students’ strengths/weaknesses in following the English course.

Abstract

This paper describes and evaluates a funded longitudinal teaching development project that aims to bridge the gap from classroom-based theory learning to experiential professional learning, and thereby prepare ideal and competent world class graduates. To align with the Universitys shared mission to foster links with the business community, the design of the internship program has a threefold purpose and was implemented in stages. It intends to enhance students professional awareness-knowledge-skills through a multi-leveled approach integrating classroom learning with professional practice. A debriefing mechanism was also built in enabling students to share their learning and professional challenges, and theory application to problem-solving scenarios. A 360 degree multiple evaluation procedure were used to measure the project effectiveness, including the use of industry consultants, student interns, hosts, and academic supervisors.   The project has proved to promote closer ties with the business community and enhance students professional competencies to increase future success in the competitive job market. The impact of the internship program is significant in two aspects.  From the perspective of student learning, the internship allows students to understand how they can improve business efficiency by applying communications theories.  From the teaching perspective, the successful and unsuccessful intern experiences can be drawn upon in developing class-room teaching. These lessons can focus on preparing students to solve real-world business communication problems.

The study aimed to determine the level of self-efficacy in writing skill among learners at International Islamic University Malaysia. The respondents were 200 learners from the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at this university. The instrument used was adapted from previous studies that measured writing self-efficacy. The results show that most learners had high level of self-efficacy in writing as well as its elements. However, in the writing process, the study discovers moderate level of self-efficacy among these learners. In terms of gender differences, there was no significant difference in self-efficacy between both male and female learners. Male learners reported higher level of self-efficacy in overall writing skill as well as its process and elements. When it comes to the level of study, the result indicates a significant difference between beginner and advanced learners. The advanced learners displayed greater level of self-efficacy than their counterparts in all parts of writing.
