Abstract

Final-year university students are recognized as a population vulnerable to academic stress, particularly during the thesis-writing phase, with previous studies reporting high stress prevalence and associated maladaptive behaviors. However, evidence specifically examining emotional eating during this high-risk phase in Aceh remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between academic stress and emotional eating among final-year students. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted in November–December 2024, involving 50 final-year students selected through total sampling, representing the entire eligible population. The inclusion criteria were active students completing their thesis, while incomplete responses were excluded. Academic stress and emotional eating were measured using the Indonesian versions of the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA) and the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ), which demonstrated acceptable internal consistency. Data were analyzed using the Spearman’s correlation test. Most respondents experienced moderate academic stress (80%), while emotional eating was predominantly moderate (54%) and severe (46%). A significant positive correlation was found between academic stress and emotional eating (rₛ = 0.33; p = 0.018). In conclusion, academic stress was moderately associated with increased emotional eating behavior among final-year students, highlighting the need for targeted stress management and behavioral interventions in the university setting.

Abstract

Elevated blood pressure affects approximately three out of ten Indonesian adolescents aged ≥15 years, increasing their risk of adult hypertension. Adiposity indicators, including Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) and body fat percentage (BF%), are biologically linked to insulin resistance, while high fat intake may increase vascular resistance. However, evidence regarding adolescents in metropolitan settings, such as Jakarta, remains limited. This study examined the associations between fat intake, WHR, BF%, physical activity, and elevated blood pressure among adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 219 ninth-grade students at State Junior High School 182 Jakarta, selected using stratified random sampling. Blood pressure was categorized as normal (<120/80 mmHg) or elevated (≥120/80 mmHg). Data were collected through interviews and completion of the SQ-FFQ, PAQ-C/PAQ-A), anthropometric measurements, and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. Ethical approval was obtained (No. 037/KEPK/UNPRI/V/2025). Chi-Square analysis revealed that abdominal obesity (WHR) and high BF% were significantly associated with elevated blood pressure (p=0,017 and p<0,001), whereas fat intake (p=0,132) and physical activity (p=0,694) were not. Multivariate logistic regression identified BF% as the strongest determinant (p<0,001; OR=7,393; 95% CI=3,748-14,581) of elevated blood pressure. In conclusion, adiposity, particularly an elevated BF%, is a key driver of elevated blood pressure in urban adolescents, underscoring the need for early obesity-focused interventions.

Abstract

The demand for dairy-free frozen desserts is increasing; however, non-dairy matrices often have weak structures, limited water retention, and sensory defects. This study aimed to optimize a dairy-free ice cream formulated with coconut milk, date syrup, inulin, pea protein isolate, pineapple, and egg yolk, and evaluate its physical, nutritional, and sensory characteristics. Methods: A completely randomized design was used from March to May 2026. Six formulations (control and P1–P5) were tested at Poltekkes Tanjungkarang and Politeknik Negeri Lampung. Physical properties, including water-holding capacity and first dripping time, were assessed based on the proximate composition and sensory acceptability using a 9-point hedonic scale. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance, followed by Duncan’s test. The results showed that formulation modifications significantly affected all evaluated profiles (p < 0.001). P3 was identified as optimal, with 22.81% protein, 26.52% fat, 13.84% fiber, 43.48% total solids, 47.36% water-holding capacity, and a first dripping time of 240.33 s. P3 also had the highest aroma (6.14), taste (6.51), and mouthfeel (6.19) scores among all the samples. In conclusion, P3 exhibited the most favorable nutritional, physical, and sensory profiles among the tested formulations. This formulation may support the development of nutrient-dense dairy-free frozen desserts, although product classification should be clarified because egg yolk was included.

Abstract

Pediatric tuberculosis (TB) remains a critical public health issue in Indonesia, with 809,000 new cases reported in 2023. Malnutrition is a common comorbidity; however, the nutritional trajectory that differentiates children who achieve clinical recovery from those who do not remains underexplored. This retrospective cohort study analyzed 102 children aged 2–18 years with pulmonary TB who were treated at RSUD dr. Zainoel Abidin, Banda Aceh, from January 2024 to January 2025. Patients with comorbidities and incomplete medical records were excluded. Nutritional status was assessed using the CDC 2000 Growth Charts at three time points: baseline, 2 months, and 6 months, and analyzed using Repeated Measures ANOVA (p<0.05). Among the participants, 96 (94.1%) recovered, whereas 6 (5.9%) did not. The mean body weight increased significantly from 21.9 kg at baseline to 25.0 kg at six months (p<0.001), with the proportion of children classified as well-nourished rising from 45.1% to 71.6%. Nutritional trajectories improved significantly over the treatment period (p<0.001), with more consistent gains observed in the recovery group. In conclusion, these findings indicate that six-month anti-tuberculosis therapy (ATT) is effective not only in resolving infection but also in enhancing the nutritional status of children. Monitoring nutritional trajectories may serve as a valuable prognostic indicator for evaluating treatment response and predicting clinical outcomes in pediatric TB.

Abstract

High levels of food waste among hospitalized patients, particularly those with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), may indicate a mismatch between hospital food services and patient acceptance, potentially affecting their glycemic control. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based nutrition counseling in reducing food waste and blood glucose levels compared with standard nutrition counseling. A quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design was conducted at Klaten Islamic General Hospital in March 2026. Forty-five patients with T2DM were assigned to three groups: CBT-based counseling, standard counseling, and control. Food waste was assessed using the Comstock method, and blood glucose levels were measured using a GlucoDR glucometer. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon, paired-samples t-, Kruskal–Wallis, and one-way ANOVA tests. Results: Significant differences were observed among the groups after the intervention. The CBT group showed the greatest reduction in food waste and blood glucose levels compared to the standard counseling and control groups (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). In conclusion, CBT-based nutrition counseling was more effective than standard nutrition counseling and usual care in reducing food waste and improving glycemic control in patients with T2DM.

Abstract

Maternal nutritional status during pregnancy plays a critical role in ensuring optimal maternal and fetal health. Improving the nutritional status of pregnant women is essential for preventing chronic energy deficiency (CED). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a 30-day locally sourced supplementary feeding program on the nutritional status of pregnant women at the Moyo Hilir Community Health Center in Indonesia. A pre-experimental study employing a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted with 32 pregnant women. Nutritional status indicators were assessed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results demonstrated that the locally sourced supplementary feeding program significantly improved nutritional status indicators and hemoglobin levels among pregnant women following the intervention (p = 0.001). The mean body weight increased from 47.70 ± 6.55 kg to 49.53 ± 6.73 kg. The mean mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) increased from 21.03 ± 0.67 cm to 23.11 ± 0.75 cm. The mean body mass index (BMI) increased from 19.57 ± 2.29 kg/m² to 21.15 ± 2.57 kg/m². Furthermore, the mean hemoglobin concentration increased from 10.67 ± 1.43 g/dL to 14.48 ± 19.47 g/dL following the intervention. In conclusion, the findings indicate that locally sourced supplementary food effectively improves the nutritional status of pregnant women with chronic energy deficiency.

Abstract

Undernutrition in adolescent girls is a critical aspect of the malnutrition cycle. While early detection is necessary, the standard BMI-for-Age Z-Score (BAZ) method is difficult to implement in community screenings. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) in detecting thinness (BAZ < -2SD) in adolescent girls. This school-based cross-sectional study, conducted in 2025, involved 298 female students aged 15-17 years in Yogyakarta. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to test the relationship between MUAC and BAZ, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to determine diagnostic accuracy, and the Youden Index was used to determine the optimal cutoff. The results showed that MUAC had a highly positive correlation with BAZ (r = 0.907, p < 0.001) and excellent predictive accuracy (AUC= 0.972;95% CI: 0.951–0.993). The optimal MUAC cutoff was < 20.7 cm, achieving a perfect sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 88.3%. Therefore, MUAC is an accurate and effective screening tool for predicting thinness in adolescent girls (15-17 years). The cutoff of 20.7 cm is applicable to this specific population. For national applications, further research expanding the scope to rural locations and a wider age range is highly recommended.

Abstract

The increase in the elderly population poses a challenge in the field of health because it is associated with physiological changes that can affect nutritional status and increase the risk of noncommunicable diseases. Anthropometric measurements, such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), are important indicators for assessing nutritional status and the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. This study aimed to describe the anthropometric profile and blood pressure of older adults in Semarang City. This study used a descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. Data were collected in the working areas of the Pegandan and Bulu Lor Community Health Centers in Semarang City in February 2024. A sample size of 80 elderly respondents was selected using purposive sampling. The results showed that most respondents were aged 60–69 years (61.25%) and were female (72.5%). Based on anthropometric profiles, 51.2% of respondents had a normal waist circumference, and 55% were not classified as obese based on BMI. However, the prevalence of hypertension among the respondents was quite high at 68.8%. In conclusion, this study shows that most older adults in Semarang City have waist circumferences within the normal range and are not obese based on their body mass index. However, the prevalence of hypertension among respondents was relatively high.

Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy is a serious public health issue that can adversely affect both mothers and fetuses. Dietary patterns play a crucial role in determining the hemoglobin levels in pregnant women. In Indonesia, anemia among pregnant women remains highly prevalent, affecting approximately 48.9% of them.  This study aimed to analyze the association between dietary patterns and hemoglobin levels in pregnant women. This study employed a cross-sectional design with a purposive sampling technique, involving 170 pregnant women in Asahan Regency from April to May 2025. Dietary data were collected using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), and hemoglobin levels were measured using a hematology analyzer. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to examine the association between each dietary pattern and the hemoglobin level. Dietary patterns high in both animal and plant protein were significantly associated with increased hemoglobin levels in pregnant women (95% CI: 12.02–12.7; p<0.001). Conversely, consumption of diets high in sugar and fat was significantly associated with decreased hemoglobin levels (95% CI: 11–11.8; p<0.001). In conclusion, diets rich in animal and plant proteins are positively associated with higher hemoglobin levels in pregnant women. These findings highlight the importance of protein-based nutritional interventions in preventing anemia during pregnancy.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia and remains a growing global public health concern, including in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Several determinants have been associated with its occurrence, including age, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and family history. This study aimed to investigate the association between obesity, physical activity, smoking habits, family history, and diabetes mellitus. A case–control study was conducted among 46 participants, consisting of 23 patients with diabetes mellitus and 23 non-diabetic controls who underwent laboratory examinations at the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of Dr. Zainoel Abidin Regional General Hospital in Banda Aceh. Primary data were collected through interviews and structured questionnaires, and secondary data were obtained from medical records between January and August 2023. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis, chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 5.9% in women and 5.2% in men. Obesity was significantly associated with diabetes mellitus (p < 0.001), with an odds ratio of 23.02. In contrast, physical activity, smoking status, and family history of diabetes showed no significant association with diabetes mellitus (p > 0.05). In conclusion, obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes mellitus. Regular monitoring and control of the body mass index are essential strategies for maintaining an ideal body weight and reducing the risk of diabetes mellitus.
