The toponym ‘benteng’ is a name of a village in Kecamatan Pengaron, in Kalimantan Selatan. The toponym is suggested to be associated with the existence of the Dutch fortress ‘Pengaron’ which is recognized as the location of the initial outbreak of the Banjar or Barito War. This study aims to rediscover the original Pengaron fort area. This study uses inductive-descriptive methods and data collection techniques by surveys, excavations and interviews. The excavation yielded two brick structures that are parts of a house foundation. Besides the archaeological evidence of building structures that strengthen the relationship between the toponym and Pengaron fort, it is necessary to undertake a study on old archives or written resources that supports the strong relationship between both data.

There are many choices how to use and manage an archaeological site, for examples: for research purpose, just restore it for future generations or exploit the site for tourism destination. These can be managed either by government or private authority/NGO. In Candi Agung and Tabanio cases -both in Sothern Kalimantan-various interests from different authorities have caused conflict because each authority would like to manage the site according to their own interest. I am of the opinion that one important solution to minimize the negative effects is by practicing coordination between stakeholders. When this is practiced, the archaeological site will be better preserved, while other community activities also continue.

Every individual who has attended a 12-years-elementary education must be familiar with the lndic influenced name of "MOiavarmman", which marked the commencement of the historical era of the Indonesian Archipelago in early 4th Century. The written evidence of MOiavarmman's existence is inscribed on six of the seven yOpa of Muara Kaman. Besides the seven yOpa, archaeological traces of Hinduism are also discovered in settlement pouches along the Mahakam River Basin up to the upper river in the west and north. Nevertheless, the relationship among those material cultures is still a mystery; whether they can be identified as Oiavarmman's heritage is a question which needs further meticulous analysis for liable answers. Despite the present mystery, this article will discuss a glimpse of cultural occurrences in the eastern region of Kalimantan based on local narratives, the archaeological evidences of Hinduism on the Mahakam River Basin and their significance, and the strategic policy to accomplish the preservation-based benefiting from archaeological resources.
