Abstract

This study aims to determine the extent to which ethnic and religious information is believed to be fake news or facts and is spread to people close to them. This type of research is qualitative using a phenomenological approach, namely collecting experience data and testing individual assessments through an experimental stage from a sample of 30 non-expert millennials and gen z in the city of Semarang, Indonesia. The findings of this study reveal several attitudes formed by participants. First, participants believe that fake news still exists and is spread predominantly online. Second, participants believe that they will not be trapped by fake news and have credibility. Third, respondents discuss suspicious information with reference groups. Fourth, dissonance is still prominent in the assessment of information status (fake or fact) and the culture of collectivism appears prominent in this study.

Abstract

This study analyzes the communication behavior of social media users X in responding to a shooting case by a high-ranking Indonesian police official. This study was motivated by the high public response to the murder case of Brigadier Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat by Inspector General Ferdy Sambo, which triggered a crisis of trust in the National Police. With a qualitative approach and analysis methods of communication networks and content, data was collected from 18,000 tweets, which included original tweets, retweets, mentions, and comments from within and outside the country. The data is then analyzed using NVivo software for coding and classification. The results of the study show that social media X plays a role as a digital public space where netizens express emotions, form opinions, and create social pressure on state institutions. The structure of communication networks reveals the key actors that shape the public narrative. These findings confirm the importance of social media in the study of public communication and the crisis of institutional legitimacy.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) marks a fundamental shift in communication science, positioning AI not only as a research tool but also as an active entity in the communication process. This paper argues for a paradigm shift from conventional human to human interaction toward beyond human communication, where AI functions as communicator, medium, and message producer. Such transformation requires re-examining communication theories in interpersonal, mass, and technological contexts within a convergent framework. At the theoretical level, communication must be repositioned to address new ontological and epistemological questions. Methodologically, AI offers opportunities through big data and automated analysis while raising ethical challenges such as algorithmic bias and the risk of reducing communication to technical processes. This paper proposes a reflective critical approach that emphasizes adaptive, convergent, and contextual communication theories, ensuring the discipline remains relevant in the era of artificial intelligence.

Abstract

This study aims to identify actors, dominant discourses, and discourse coalitions in the debate surrounding the implementation of analog switch-off (ASO) in Indonesia on November 2, 2022 until the implementation of total ASO on August 17, 2023. This study employs discourse network analysis method with data sources in the form of 283 articles from 12 national online news outlets. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) became the most dominant actor, followed by the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), West Java citizens, Central Java citizens, and East Java citizens. The dominant discourses centered on criticisms of set-top box (STB) distribution performance; the perceived benefits of digitalization for the public; critiques of ASO implementation that overlooked citizen and stakeholder readiness; and repeated calls for intensified government socialization efforts. The debate produced six discourse coalitions–two supporting ASO and four criticizing it. While these coalitions revealed clear alignments and contestations, their influence remained limited, shaping only the level of discourse structuration rather than affecting policy outcomes

Abstract

This study examines online media coverage of the alleged forced hijab case at SMAN 1 Banguntapan using actor mapping and sentiment analysis. Based on a quantitative content analysis of 72 news articles published during the peak period of the case (July 31–August 7, 2022), the findings show a strong dominance of negative sentiment and a concentration on institutional actors, while victims and civil society voices were marginalized. Media narratives largely emphasized conflict and polarization rather than reconciliation. Such framing may normalize exclusionary discourses, reinforce perceptions of intolerance, and constrain more inclusive understandings of religious diversity.

Abstract

This research examines sustainable communication practices in the digital economic empowerment of MSMEs in Kampung Laos, Merah Mata Village, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Although the digitalization of MSMEs is often understood as a matter of technology adoption, there is still limited research that places communication, local values, and power relations as the foundation for the sustainability of the digital economy in rural communities. This research uses a qualitative approach with a participatory case study design. Data was collected through participant observation in university-community engagement programs, in-depth interviews with purposively selected key informants (farmers, MSME actors, village officials, and institutional representatives), and a review of CSR documents and community production archives. The research findings identify four main dimensions of sustainable communication, namely, local narrative-based social marketing in “Kampung Laos,” CSR support as an initial trigger for empowerment, community participation in collective decision-making, and low-digital technology adaptation through WhatsApp and Instagram. This practice increases product visibility and order flow stability, although it still faces limitations in digital literacy and distribution. This study shows that digital economic empowerment lies on a spectrum between independence and dependence on external actors. This research contributes to the development of sustainable communication studies by affirming that integrating local values, social innovation, and participatory communication is more crucial for the economic sustainability of MSMEs in the digital age than simply adopting technology.

Abstract

Personal shoppers (jastip) have emerged as informal digital workers within the gig economy, often promoted on social media as flexible and empowering entrepreneurial practices. However, behind this narrative lies a condition of precarity and limited labor protection. This study examines how the representation of jastip workers is discursively constructed on Instagram using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis. Adopting a critical qualitative approach, this research combines textual analysis, virtual ethnography, and interviews to analyze captions, visual elements, emojis, testimonials, and interaction patterns. The findings reveal that digital identity is constructed through affective language, visual consistency, and trust-oriented expressions, which serve as performative strategies to establish credibility. Participatory communication practices, such as live sessions and testimonial reposts, co-produce legitimacy while intensifying relational labor. At the level of social practice, these representations are embedded within the ideological logic of the gig economy and digital neoliberalism, where flexibility and productivity are emphasized while structural vulnerability remains obscured. This study highlights how platform logic and discourse shape trust, identity, and labor relations in informal digital work.

Abstract

This study examines the ways Indonesian mothers construct and negotiate family identity through the use of public and private Instagram accounts. The growing presence of mothers on Instagram has transformed the representation of family life into a performative digital practice shaped by visibility, social interaction, and cultural norms. Rather than functioning as a neutral record of everyday experiences, Instagram has become a discursive space where family identity is strategically produced and managed. Drawing on Narrative Performance Theory, this qualitative research employs in-depth interviews with Indonesian mothers who engage in different patterns of digital visibility. The findings indicate that mothers with public Instagram accounts tend to construct curated narratives of family harmony and ideality to achieve social recognition, legitimacy, and broader audience engagement. In contrast, mothers who use private accounts emphasize maternal reflexivity, emotional closeness, ethical responsibility, and the protection of children’s digital privacy. These contrasting narrative practices demonstrate that digital family identity is shaped through internal and external boundary management strategies that balance self-expression, social connection, and digital safety. The study highlights Instagram’s role as a dynamic arena in which family identity is continuously performed, negotiated, and redefined, contributing to broader discussions on digital parenting, family communication, and ethical considerations in social media use.

Abstract

This study analyzed the compliance of Indonesian online media with the Child-Friendly Reporting Guidelines (PPRA) and UNICEF Guidelines, focusing on stigmatizing language and visual representation of children. A total of 282 news articles published in January, June, and December 2024 by Sindonews.com (national) and Poskota.co.id (local) were examined through quantitative content analysis. The coding instrument consisted of 117 indicators, with this article emphasizing 41 indicators related to language and visuals. The findings revealed moderate compliance. While anonymity protocols were generally applied, stigmatizing terms and degrading narratives remained frequent, especially when reporting children as perpetrators. Visuals often blurred children’s faces but still exposed contextual identifiers such as homes and schools. These practices undermine child protection. The study concluded that ethical reporting requires empathetic language, safe visuals, and stronger monitoring by the Press Council.
