Abstract

The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has facilitated the emergence of AI-generated photo content, giving rise to a social media trend in which users create images depicting themselves alongside their idols. This trend is originated within the fan community of the Indonesian National Football Team athletes in various intimate scenarios. This study aims to examine the forms of sexual objectification directed at these athletes. Employing a qualitative approach, this research utilizes Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis alongside Objectification Theory. The data consist of AI-generated photo content circulating on social media, representing the male bodies of Indonesian National Football Team athletes as constructed by fans. The findings reveal that such content frames athletes’ bodies as sexual objects, detached from their achievements and professional identities. These representations contribute to the normalization of an ideology in which athletes, as public figures, are rendered consumable within private and sexualized contexts.  Furthermore, this form of objectification has evolved into a recurring pattern within digital fan culture, continuously reproduced and normalized through AI technologies on social media.

Abstract

This study measures the role of Instagram as an environmental communication space for Generation Z in Indonesia. Grounded in the frameworks of Environmental Communication and Social Influence Theory, this study positions the variables of community-based digital campaign exposure ("One Man One Mangrove") and youth environmental ambassador credibility as predictors of environmental awareness. A quantitative survey was administered to 96 followers of the Instagram account @mangrovejakarta.id, and the data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results show that both exposure to campaign content and perceived ambassador credibility significantly predict environmental awareness (p < 0.05), with ambassadors exerting the strongest standardized relationship (β = 0.704). The two predictors explain 65.4% of the variance in awareness (R² = 0.654), indicating that digitally mediated communication can contribute to the formation of awareness regarding mangrove conservation within this specific follower community. These findings suggest that social media can serve as a potential environmental communication channel for engaging youth audiences in ecosystem-specific issues and may support ongoing efforts to enhance environmental literacy in coastal conservation contexts.

Abstract

This study examined how religious young adults experience value-behavior inconsistency when engaging in nightlife drinking and clubbing, and how they communicatively managed the resulting tension. Cognitive dissonance theory and accounts theory served as complementary analytic frameworks, positioning dissonance reduction as both a psychological and an inherently communicative process. A qualitative design was employed, with semi-structured interviews conducted with eight college students aged 18 to 19 years at an Indonesian university, comprising four male and four female participants from Muslim and Christian backgrounds. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings revealed that participants consistently positioned religion as a foundational moral framework within which nightlife participation was interpreted as inconsistent with religious expectations. Dissonance was experienced primarily as post-behavioral emotional and identity-based discomfort, intensifying after leaving nightlife settings rather than during participation. Participants employed two broad communicative account-making patterns to manage dissonance, namely justification accounts involving boundary-setting and moral reframing, and apology and conciliation accounts involving repentance, prayer, and compensatory religious practices oriented toward the divine and the reflexive moral self. Dissonance reduction operated as ongoing communicative regulation rather than a single resolution.
