<![CDATA[This study of speech act discusses a socio-pragmatic phenomena found in Javanese daily communication that, in prohibiting, Javanese people prefer command to prohibition, and in commanding, they prefer prohibition to command. This is due to the fact that in Javanese peopleâs view, command is the most effective strategy to prohibit someone to do something and prohibition is the most effective strategy to command someone to do something. There are 20 samples of Javanese utterances which are analyzed here. The analysis covers Locution, Illocution, and Perlocution of each sample. However, the effectiveness of those strategies is influenced by two social factors, namely age and social class. Those strategies are effective if they are used by the elder people to the younger ones and by the higher social class to the lower one, but not vice versa.]]>

<![CDATA[In the process of teaching and learning, as a teacher need a handbook to guide students in learning materials. The objectives of the research are to develop a textbook for teaching material in the course of Introduction to Text Types in accordance with the quality, criteria and also to improve the quality of teaching and learning process. The quality of a textbook has to focus on students understanding in the material, teachers can easily convey the material in detail. Syllabus and lesson plan of the course is used as references
in developing materials. There are several steps in developing a textbook, such as: planning, organizing, implementation and evaluation. The result of measurement from
the reviewers based on categories has 40.33 in average score. It came out based on several aspects, such as: the concept of truth, clarity sentence, linguistic, evaluation, enforceability, handouts structure, physical appearance and references. The practically test was done by the students got 113 in average score. It shows that criterian of textbook
is excellent to use in the course of Introduction to Text Types, English Department of FTIK UNISNU Jepara.]]>

<![CDATA[Story books, through the pictures and simple language they use and also the age of their readers, could become a strategic media to promote multiculturalism among children. Multi cultures also mean multi identities of the people living in Indonesia. This article is aimed to dismantle how the identities of children from various cultures in Indonesia in Surat dari Lembah Baliem, a book for children describing Indonesian diversity, are represented. Despite the multicultural values it contains, the stories in this book also show us that Indonesian multicultural diversity implies dynamic communication and tension among the cultural groups it describes. Moreover, the representation still shows stereotypical model that operates against the multicultural idealism it promotes.]]>

<![CDATA[This research is aimed at analyzing the use of rhetoric in national online news. Rhetoric is an effective and persuasive speaking or writing. Rhetoric frequently uses exaggerative even bombastic language. The purpose of rhetoric is to obtain particular effect as well as persuade the readers. In online news, rhetoric is used to persuade economically and ideologically. Economically, online news is a market commodity that must be promoted. Ideologically, online news is a domination of institution or others. These purposes influence the language employed in the online media or news online. To gain the objectives, researcher applied descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected from 15 news articles published in CNN Indonesia online news on March 2017. Then, the data were analyzed based on the objective of the study. After compiling the data, the researcher classified rhetorical tropes and news structure in CNN Indonesia. The result shows four types of rhetorical tropes utilized in online news, they are: hyperbole, metonym, metaphor, and neologism. Furthermore, the news structures in CNN Indonesia emphasize on three strategies: providing information that also has an attitudinal and emotional dimension, building strong relational structure for facts, and emphasizing the factual nature of events.]]>

<![CDATA[All of the literature studies are related to the activity of interpretation. One of literature types that can be interpreted is poetry. To interpret a poem can involve the role of heuristics and hermeneutics concept. This study used several poems contained in the book of poetry Deru Campur Debu by Chairil Anwar. The problems of this study, namely 1) How do heuristic and hermeneutic reading on the poem of Chairil Anwar, and 2) What are the meaning of language and literature contained in the poem of Chairil Anwar. Heuristic and hermeneutic readings are the method to analyze literary works by using semiotic approach. Semiotics is a term that refers to the same thing that is the sign science. The relationship between signifier and signified included, icons, indices, and symbols. The results of this study are as follows: 1. In the sixth poems of Chairil Anwar always brings the themes of freedom, rebellion and adventure that are the expression of Chairils characteristic himself. 2. The unpleasant experience of dating with Hayati made him upset and dreaming of a lover who was very different from Hayati. therefore, Chairil express it with harsh words to describe the regret]]>

<![CDATA[The issue of sexual violence is not becoming a strange thing in the public nowadays. Many victims of such violence still chose to keep silent by not voicing their suffering. This study tried to capture this fonomena through a novel character, Celie, in Alice Walkers The Color Purple. Celies silence on sexual harassment and physical violence on her due to the chaos of mental development where the id, ego and superego phases do not run properly. Fear of her stepfathers threats were a strong reason for her silence. The purpose of this study was to reveal the mental development of a sexual violence victim from the perspective of Freuds psychoanalysis. The methods used are literature studies where researchers attempt to associate the story in the novel related to the sexual harassment issue with Freuds theory.]]>

<![CDATA[This article compares refusals in English by Indonesian learners and native speakers of English. The study was done within the framework of pragmatics and particularly under the scope of speech acts. The goal was to get to know the refusals made by the two groups of respondent in terms of the number of speech act, the forms of speech acts, and the politeness strategy used in the refusals.The research involved 30 respondents consisting of 15 Indonesian Learners and 15 native speakers of English, who were Australians. The Indonesian learners were the second year students of the English Department of Universitas Gadjah Mada, while the native speakers were the students of the Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service (INCULS) of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta.The result showed that both groups of respondent shared some similarities in terms of the form of speech act used in their refusals. However, compared to the Indonesian learners, some of the native speakers expressed refusals in single speech acts and a combination of two speech acts. Fewer refusals by the native speakers were expressed in a combination of three and four speech acts. Another finding was that the two groups applied different politeness strategy to their refusals. Some of the Indonesian learners showed deference on their refusals, while some of the native speakers gave offers on their refusals. This study hopefully gives more insights about pragmatics, especially about refusal, and is also useful and helpful for other similar studies in the future]]>

<![CDATA[Studentsâ text books mostly contain the materials which do not show the local wisdom and also they do not include sufficient language elements as one of the keys in English learning. So that is why teachers have to innovate the teaching materials in order to combining the language skills, language elements, as well as the local wisdom. Adaptation is one of the most effective innovation which can be done by the teachers to integrate between teaching materials and studentsâ sociocultural condition. Hence, it is very important for them in adjusting the teaching material to the studentsâ internal and external factors. The teachers can choose certain local wisdom to be inserted in their teaching materials in this qualitative study such as tourism, culinary, and batik. Those materials can be downloaded from the internet and the usage should be considered to the language skills and studentsâ grade.]]>

<![CDATA[The title of the research is âthe emergence of collective identity in Dablongan Banyumasan shirt industry.â The location of the research was in Banyumas Regency of Central Java Province, with the objective of descripting the emergence of collective identity through local shirt industry particularly Banyumasan special shirt of Dablongan. The politic of identity in the research would not be seen as threat, but on the contrary it is considered as opportunity in social harmonization as well as the chance to display the products of creative industries. The method of research is qualitative research method and the informan withdrawal is based on purposing sampling. The data are coming from primary data and secondary data. Data primer are gained from depth interview and observation, while secondary data are collected from documentation. The emergence of raising cultural identity through language, picture, and other designs local shirt to resurface the basic local characteristic gives positive impacts as well as the negatives. The resurgence of collective identity who are proud of their local culture gives positives influence on the existence of the local cultures in Indonesia. Nevertheless, if the sense of locality is too much, it will create contested identity with other local identities along with the forsaking of the idea that local identities are actually parts of national identity. Creative industry needs three primary actors, government, business, and intellectuals to drive the industry stay in its lane. Government needs to give guidelines and appreciation toward creative industry which able to compete to the foreign culture. The business is needed to manage the fiscal as well as the marketing of creative industry, and the intellectuals are needed to give deeper understanding on the local culture which become business opportunity but do not threat the existence of other local cultures.]]>

<![CDATA[In a psycholinguistic study, children at the age of 3-5 years old are considered at a differentiation period. In this period, children have already acquired their mother tongue, in terms of adultâs basic grammatical laws. The language which function as a means of communication starts working. Their vocabularies are quantitatively and qualitatively growing as their perceptions and experiences upon the world start to share with others including their expressions of feelings, in this case, their hillarious expression disclosure. However, in this period, children have not completely acquired adultsâ linguistic structures. Thus, it is that estimated there are some differences between childrenâs hilarious expression structural dislosure and adultsâ. In addition, hilarious expression structural incompleteness may result in adultsâ error perceptions on what the children mean. Based on data analysis, it is shown that children at the age of 3-5 years old have already aquired various linguistic aspects on hilarious expressions, including phonological, morphological, and syntactical aspects. one factor encouraging children to show their hilarious expressions is achievement, such as when accepted as a friend, given a gift/surprise, finding something, and feeling capable of doing something.]]>
