This article compares refusals in English by Indonesian learners and native speakers of English. The study was done within the framework of pragmatics and particularly under the scope of speech acts. The goal was to get to know the refusals made by the two groups of respondent in terms of the number of speech act, the forms of speech acts, and the politeness strategy used in the refusals. The research involved 30 respondents consisting of 15 Indonesian Learners and 15 native speakers of English, who were Australians. The Indonesian learners were the second year students of the English Department of Universitas Gadjah Mada, while the native speakers were the students of the Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service (INCULS) of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. The result showed that both groups of respondent shared some similarities in terms of the form of speech act used in their refusals. However, compared to the Indonesian learners, some of the native speakers expressed refusals in single speech acts and a combination of two speech acts. Fewer refusals by the native speakers were expressed in a combination of three and four speech acts. Another finding was that the two groups applied different politeness strategy to their refusals. Some of the Indonesian learners showed deference on their refusals, while some of the native speakers gave offers on their refusals. This study hopefully gives more insights about pragmatics, especially about refusal, and is also useful and helpful for other similar studies in the future

When language learners regulate self-improvement activities in their spare time, a broader space for exploration emerges. The purpose of this paper is to present a narrative study of two young adult EFL learners from Indonesia and Thailand who routinely schedule extensive listening through podcasts for their self-directed English learning. Data for this study were gathered through the use of learners' learning diaries and interviews. They were also subjected to thematic analysis. The researcher claims that this study will provide empirical insights into the lived experiences of independent English learners while also clarifying that learning outside of the classroom is no less meaningful or beneficial than learning in the classroom. Some of the factors that motivated learners to engage in this learning practice were the variety, multitasking, and flexibility of podcasts, as well as personal preferences for auditory learning, opportunities to learn other things besides English, and an unwavering future goal toward study and work advancement. Vocabulary enrichment, speech pace and accent recognition, fluency and pronunciation improvement, as well as a stronger knowledge of pragmatic skill and natural dialogues were highlighted as six major areas of their practice that had an influence.

The environment is important for human life. Most environmental damage is caused by humans because humans play an important role in determining the future of the environment. Local communities have ways of utilizing natural rights to protect the environment, one of which is through environmental myths. Through myths, society builds a culture that is useful for environmental sustainability. Okky Madasari's novel highlights myths that play an important role in environmental sustainability. These myths function to dispel crimes against the environment from irresponsible human behavior. This research aims to look for the relationship between myth and environmental sustainability contained in two novels by Okky Madasari, namely Mata di Tanah Melus and Mata and Laut Man. This type of research is qualitative. This research was carried out using a literary anthropology approach by studying the myths in Okky Madasari's two novels and then describing the positive relationship of these myths to environmental sustainability. Data collection techniques use library techniques. The data analysis technique uses content analysis techniques. The results of this research explain that myths have a role in environmental conservation efforts. The relationship between myth and environmental sustainability is a consideration for humans to always maintain a good relationship with nature because in essence humans are only a small part of the ecosystem. In the novel Mata di Tanah Melus, the myth about Bei Nai, or the Crocodile God is found. Fear of Bei nai figures can limit the level of crocodile hunting. In the novel Mata and the Sea Man, a myth is also found about the prohibition of fishing on full moon nights, because on that night many fish breed. With this myth, the fish breeding cycle is maintained.

This study will focus on the peculiarity of Nusantara Islam amidst the setting of Indonesian multiculturalism by studying the content analytically based on 21 documents indexed by Scopus. For that reason, Islam is seen harmoniously merged within the variances of the Indonesia cultural setting for religious tolerance to meet societal peaceful coexistence. The findings prove Nusantara Islam is inclusive, and flexible, and hence has emerged pivotal in unifying the highly fractionalized populace along unifying bonds of unity over diversity. It struggles for sustainability amidst the growing transnational ideologies, globalization, and digital dissemination of radical discourses. This paper underlines the value of Nusantara Islam as a model of religious moderation and provides recommendations on how to meet contemporary challenges. The research enriches the body of knowledge dealing with the interrelationship between religion and multiculturalism in ways that benefit the global discourses of interfaith harmony and cultural pluralism.
