Abstract

It is expected that the central government promotes sustainable development goals (SDGs) to enhance social participation and inclusivity in creating sustainable livelihoods at the village level. Although the Indonesian government has implemented policies to increase stakeholder awareness, there are still restrictions on inclusive participation, limiting the democratic process. This paper aims to analyse the promotion of SDGs in Terong Dlingo Village, Bantul Regency, Indonesia, focusing on regulatory aspects and social participation. The research adopts a case study approach using qualitative methods, including observations and in-depth interviews with local practitioners. The findings reveal that the SDGs village program is largely influenced by a top-down approach, despite efforts made by individuals, families, neighbourhoods, and other elements through surveys conducted on SDGs villages. In response, the researchers suggest that greater efforts are needed to effectively socialise and supervise the program to raise awareness among the local population regarding the benefits of SDGs village programs. It is recommended that an effective socialisation and communication strategy be implemented to encourage continuous local participation in this program.

Abstract

The importance of student well-being in the context of positive youth development is widely acknowledged, despite little recognitions regarding what it means for santri to live well in the educational setting of traditional pesantren. “santri well-being” encompasses a dual-faceted composition, encompassing affective elements and life satisfaction of the pesantren students. A kiai or caregivers, not only acting as a prominent religious scholar and charismatic leader, but also assumes a pivotal role as a custodial figure within the contextual fabric of traditional pesantren milieu. The focal point of this research revolves around the examination of santri well-being within the context of Pesantren Sunan Pandanaran. With an educational heritage spanning half a century, it maintains a profound affiliation with Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Islamic organization in contemporary Indonesia. Situated in Yogyakarta, the pesantren has exhibited substantial progress of education strategies over time, adopting modern innovations while upholding its traditional Sunni values and principles. The research methodology involved the purposive selection of eight informants strategically chosen in accordance with the research objectives. This cohort comprises both students and caregivers affiliated with the pesantren. The findings marked Pesantren Sunan Pandanaran’s swift adaptation to modern educational paradigms while preserving its traditional values. A complex network of parental apparatuses exists to provide care, guidance, and support to santri, encapsulating a range of individuals and roles that collectively contribute to overall well-being and development of students. This complexity is further underscored by the collective commitment of pesantren members to uphold the Sunni theology with a demand on righteous and orthodox belief. Through such dynamic caregiving approaches, the pesantren seeks to strike a balance between tradition-innovation, thus fulfilling its mission to nurture santri well-being and satisfaction within a rich Islamic Sunni tradition.

Abstract

Conventional markets have increasingly marginalized in the modernization era from consumers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and have affected the decreasing traders' income. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the efforts to empower conventional market traders in increasing their income through the development of an e-commerce transaction system. A qualitative approach was used with data collection techniques, such as interviews and observations, while the data were analyzed by interactive technique. According to the results, the development of an e-commerce transaction system in conventional markets was conducted with a strategy of assessing market potential, socializing e-commerce concepts, and training on website management. At the implementation level, two factors behind the success of this program were the role of universities and financial support from the local government. Furthermore, the inhibiting factors include the social motivation of consumers in shopping and the cost of shipping goods. The efforts to develop an e-commerce transaction system was ineffective in increasing traders' income, while the loyalty of consumers who continue to shop at the market can contribute to the increase in income.

Abstract

Being a secular state after centuries under the Islamic sultanate of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey has been challenged by various internal political turmoil and controversies over religion and its relation to the state. As such, fierce debate has become unavoidable for Islamist and revivalist groups that feel discriminated against for practicing Islam in public spaces. This article discusses Salafism and Wahabism in contemporary Turkey, starting from its inception to its da'wah and development strategies in society. The article used a qualitative approach with a literature review. The data was collected from secondary sources, including research results by scholars and various pieces of information in the mass media that emerged during the era of Recep Tayyip Erdogan until 2022. This article scrutinizes (1) the history of the resurgence of Salafism and Wahabism in Turkey due to the influence of the social and political situation; (2) pro-Islamic political policies in the government providing an opportunity for Salafi and Wahabi to develop in Turkey; and (3) the form and strategy of a pro-active and non-confrontational Salafi group in Turkey. This third part is very urgent for this article because it relates to secular Turkey's social, political, and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Although the government issued an accommodative policy protecting and supporting minority communities, statistics has shown a decline in the number of Buddhism followers in modern-day Lombok, Indonesia. This ethnographic study aims to reconsider the existence of a cultural heritage that provides sustainable values to community development. This study seeks to understand how the vernacular Buddhism of Sasak Boda in Tebango manages to strive as the minority and live their belief amid the dominating Sasak Muslim community. Data was collected through literature review, interviews, and observation. Findings indicate that the decline of Boda devotees in Dusun Tebango of Lombok in number has been affected by the public perception of the vernacular Buddhism movement. Despite such a reality becoming an anomaly in the discourses related to cultural heritage preservation, the Tebango Buddhists are capable of maintaining the tradition through customs that are tangible and intangible. This case signifies a premise that quantitative measurement alone is insufficient to study the sustainability of a local belief system such as the Sasak Boda. Consequently, this study argues that the state of maintainability and materiality of any culture act as determinant factors in the empowerment of locality-based communities.
