Abstract

The tremendous growth of population, particularly in developing countries, has led to increased number of travels, especially those with load and freight specifications. Hence, expanding the present facilities or developing new networks or systems concerning freight and transportation is an essential issue. Among the various transportation systems, road freight has secured a significant place in sub-urban transportation, as it is responsible for transporting loads, decreasing transportation costs, and increasing the safety of highway users. Besides these advantages, poor and nonstandard design and performance of sub-urban highways and transport fleet and equipment leads to the increased number of accidents and inefficiency of these facilities.  Based on these facts, the primary aim of the present study is to probe into the factors affecting road freight accident severity. For this purpose, the data obtained from road freight accidents occurring in 2016, 2017, and 2018 in Gilan Province, Iran, were used for analyzing the frequency, ranking and determining the factors, and creating models for accident severity. The results indicated that in accordance with the accident severity model in 2016, several factors such as the season of autumn, daytime light, drivers aged from 18 to 60, and pickup trucks have impacted the on-road freight accident severity. While, in 2017 the severity was affected by factors like rural road, freight trucks, non-faulty passenger cars, motorcycles, and pedestrians. When considering the effective variables in 2018, it was  found that such factors as the accident time (usually occurring between 12 p.m. to 6 p.m)., rural and major roads, freight trucks, non-faulty motorcycles, and the careless driving without due care and attention to the front were the variables affecting road freight accidents. Moreover, not following safety guidelines during freighting is the most effective variable in road freight accidents.

Abstract

The safety and continuality of the railway network are guaranteed by carrying out a lot of maintenance interventions on the railway track. One of the most important of these actions is tamping, where railway infrastructure managers focus on optimizing tamping activities in ballasted tracks to reduce the maintenance cost. To this end, this article presents a mixed integer linear programming model of the Tamping Planning Problem (TPP) and investigates the effect of track segmentation method on the optimal solution by three scenarios. It uses an opportunistic maintenance technique to plan tamping actions. This technique clusters many tamping works through a time period to reduce the track possession cost as much as possible. CPLEX 12.6.3 is used in order to solve the TPP instances exactly. The results show that the total number of machine preparations increases by increasing the number of track segments. It is also found that the total costs increase by 6.1% and 9.4% during scenarios 2 and 3, respectively. Moreover, it is better to consider the whole railway track as a single segment (as in scenarios 1) that consists of a set of sections during the tamping planning in order to obtain the optimal maintenance cost. Doi: 10.28991/cej-2021-03091774 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

Geotechnical problems are complicated to the extent and cannot be expected in other areas since non-uniformities of existing discontinuous, pores in materials and various properties of the components. At present, it is extremely difficult to develop a program for tunnel analysis that considers all complicated factors. However, tunnel analysis has made remarkable growth for the past several years due to the development of numerical analysis method and computer development, given the situation that it was difficult to solve formula of elasticity, viscoelasticity, and plasticity for the dynamic feature of the ground when the constituent laws, yielding conditions of ground materials, geometrical shape and boundary conditions of the structure were simulated in the past. The stability of rock mass around an underground large cavern is the key to the construction of large-scale underground projects. In this paper, the stability analysis was carried out based on those parameters by using 2D FEM RS2 program. The calculated stress and displacements of surrounding rock and rock support by FEM analysis were compared with those allowable values. The pattern of deformation, stress state, and the distribution of plastic areas are analyzed. Finally, the whole stability of surrounding rock mass of underground caverns was evaluated by Rocscience - RS2 software. The calculated axial forces were far below design capacity of rock bolts. The strong rock mass strength and high horizontal to vertical stress ratio enhanced safe working conditions throughout the excavation period. Thus wide span caverns and the system of caverns could be stability excavated sedimentary rock during the underground cavern and the system of caverns excavation by blasting method. Abstract

Fiber-reinforced polymer reinforcement or polyurea reinforcement techniques are applied to strengthen unreinforced masonry walls (UMWs). The purpose of this experimental study is to verify the out-of-plane reinforcing effect of sprayed glass fiber-reinforced polyurea (GFRPU), which is a composite elastomer made of polyurea and milled glass fibers on UMW. The out-of-plane strengths and ductile behaviors based on various coating shapes are compared in this study. An empirical formula to describe the degree of reinforcement on the out-of-plane strength of the UMW is derived based on the experimental results. It is observed that the peak load-carrying capacity, ductility, and energy absorption capacity gradually improve with an increase in the strengthening degree or area. Compared with the existing masonry wall reinforcement method, the GFRPU technique is a construction method that can help improve the safety performance along with ease of construction and economic efficiency. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-2022-08-01-011 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

The research attempts to shed light on how to invest the philosophical and intellectual concept of the event in preparing the development plans for the city. Based on it, there are three strategies to read the event (Explanation, Interpretation, and Deconstruction) that are regularly responded to it with three strategies represented by (Revitilaization, Renewal, and Reform). Through the use of reading and response strategies, and the corresponding planning policies represented by: preservation, rehabilitation, and redevelopment. The research adopted an analytical and descriptive methodology for some world experiences for the eventful cities, such as Warsaw, which reflects (Explanation - Revitilaization) and used preservation, Bilbao, which reflects (Interpretation - Renewal) and used rehabilitation, and Tianjin, which reflects (Deconstruction - Reform) and used redevelopment. In an attempt to benefit from these experiences and derive some indicators for each strategy. By applying the derived indicators to the traditional Mosul city, it concluded that the most appropriate strategy for the reconstruction of this city is the strategy of Explanation – Revitalization, which represents preservation because the destruction of the city was intending to crush the historical and cultural value of the city and destroy the local and national identity. Doi: 10.28991/cej-2021-03091763 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

In order to study the dynamic response of historical masonry structures, a scaled down brick masonry model constructed in civil engineering department at Baghdad University to simulate a part of a real case study, which is Alkifil historic minaret. Most of the previous researches about masonry structures try to understand the behavior of the masonry under seismic loading by experimental and numerical methods. In this paper, the masonry units (bricks) simulated in scale (S= 1/6) with the exact shape of the prototype bricks. Cementitious tile adhesive was selected to be the mortar for the modeling. The height of the model designed to be 1.5 m with a 0.5 m diameter. Detailed construction steps were presented in this paper. Experts built the model with high accuracy. A shaking table and other dynamic testing facilities were used at the University of Baghdad. The model was tested using the time-compressed El Centro 1940 NS earthquake at different amplitudes. The first ground motion of (PGA= 0.05g) which considered as weak ground motion was used to check the adequacy of the conventional behavior of the masonry model and the limit of the elastic behavior of the model during weak earthquakes. Moderate ground motion (PGA=0.15g) was performed to investigate the response of the model with minor to moderate damages. The severe ground motions were not appropriate to use in such circumstances because of the possibility to overturn the model. The experimental results showed very adequacy of the model to withstand the weak and moderate earth motion with no observed cracks.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the performance of mortars containing locally available Pakistani montmorillonite (Mmt) clay mineral as partial replacement of cement in various curing environments. The local montmorillonite clay in “As is” (20°C) and “heated” (100°C, 200°C, 300°C, 400°C, 500°C, 600°C, 700°C, 800°C, 900°C & 1000°C) conditions was incorporated in mortar cubes as partial replacement of cement. Montmorillonite clay of all the temperatures was replaced by 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35% of cement mass in mortar cubes. The Strength Activity Index (SAI) was calculated to determine the optimum activation temperature for the clay. Compressive strengths of the controlled mix and montmorillonite modified mortars were evaluated under the Sodium Sulfate (SS) (5% solution) and mixed (Sodium Sulfate + Sodium Chloride (SCS)) (5% +3.5% solution) curing environments to study its durability performance. Upon thermal treatment montmorillonite clay showed maximum activation at 800°C temperature. Mortar containing (800°C) calcined montmorillonite clay with 25% cement replacement exhibit competent compression results. Moreover, up on exposure to aggressive environments, montmorillonite clay mortars performed better than the control samples. The mortar cubes exposed to Sulfate environment (SS) were more damaged in compression than that exposed to mixed environment (SCS), for all replacement levels and time exposures.

Abstract

In recent years, more researches on structural reliability theory and methods have been carried out. In this study, a portal steel frame is considered. The reliability analysis for the frame is represented by the probability of failure, P_f, and the reliability index, β, that can be predicted based on the failure of the girders and columns. The probability of failure can be estimated dependent on the probability density function of two random variables, namely Capacity R, and Demand Q. The Monte Carlo simulation approach has been employed to consider the uncertainty the parameters of R, and Q. Matlab functions have been adopted to generate pseudo-random number for considered parameters. Although the Monte Carlo method is active and is widely used in reliability research, it has a disadvantage which represented by the requirement of large sample sizes to estimate the small probabilities of failure. This is leading to computational cost and time. Therefore, an Approximated Monte Carlo simulation method has been adopted for this issue. In this study, four performances have been considered include the serviceability deflection limit state, ultimate limit state for girder, ultimate limit state for the columns, and elastic stability. As the portal frame is a statically indeterminate structure, therefore bending moments, and axial forces cannot be determined based on static alone. A finite element parametric model has been prepared using Abaqus to deal with this aspect. The statistical analysis for the results samples show that all response data have lognormal distribution except of elastic critical buckling load which has a normal distribution.

Abstract

The alluvial fan of Mandali located between latitude 30˚45’00” N longitude 45˚30’00” E in east of Diyala Governorate, Iraq. Thirty-five wells were identified in the study area with average depth of 84 m and estimated area of 21550 ha. A three-dimensional conceptual model was prepared by using GMS program. From wells cross sections, four geological layers have been identified. The hydraulic conductivity of these layers was calculated for steady state condition, where the water levels for nine wells distributed over the study area were observed at same time. Afterward, PEST facility in the GMS was used to estimate the aquifer hydraulic characteristics. Other characteristics such as storage coefficient and specific yield have been determined from one year field observations that were collected by General Authority of Groundwater, Diyala Governorate. Also, the observations were used for calibration of unsteady state model. Then wells were hypothetically redistributed and increased to 103 wells, assuming a distance of 1500 m between the wells, a well productivity rate of were 7 l/s, annual rainfall rate was used for recharging. Three different wells operating times were suggested and these 6, 12, and 18 hr/day with total discharge of 150, 300, 450 m3/day and maximum drawdown of 7, 11, and 20 m respectively. For water quality assessment, the collected groundwater samples were analysed at the laboratory.  Results showed that the TDS in all wells was ranged from 1000-3000 mg/l but TDS in well number 18 was exceeded 3000 mg/l which indicate that the groundwater in this well is not recommended to be used for irrigation. According to Iraqi standard for drink (IQS 2009), it can be used for drinking if saline treatment units were provided.

Abstract

In order to achieve a kind of shear connector suitable for rapid-assembling steel-concrete composite beams, a new type of hybrid shear connectors is proposed, in which the concrete slab with prefabricated circular holes and the steel beam with welded studs are installed and positioned, and then epoxy mortar is filled in the prefabricated hole to fix the studs. To study the mechanical behavior of these hybrid connectors, test on 18 push-out specimens with different prefabricated circular holes are carried out. ABAQUS finite element software is adopted to verify the relationship between the numerical simulation and experiment, influences of the epoxy mortar strength and prefabricated circular holes diameter are studied. The results show that filling epoxy mortar in the prefabricated hole is beneficial to improve the stiffness and bearing capacity of the specimen; the change of epoxy mortar strength has a certain impact on the bearing capacity and stiffness of the hybrid connector; In the case of the same strength of the filling material, the size of the prefabricated circular holes diameter directly affects the stiffness and bearing capacity of the shear stud. The shear capacity equations proposed by considering the epoxy mortar strength and prefabricated holes diameter, and it has a wide applicability.
