Abstract

This study aimed to identify the potential of natural compounds in tomatoes for diabetic complications intervention using amino acid profile, HP-TLC, antioxidant assay, enzymatic inhibitor assay, and in silico approach. Fresh air-dried tomatoes were analyzed for several screening assays including amino acid determination, HP-TLC, antioxidant activity using FRAP, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase enzyme inhibition. Virtual screening, molecular docking and molecular dynamics were performed using Molinspiration, pKcSM, AutoDock Vina, Discovery Studio, PyMOL, and Yasara software. Tomato bioactive compounds showed promising drug-likeness, antioxidant and α-amylase/glucosidase inhibitory activities, and potential for AGE-RAGE interaction. Out of 19 compounds from whole tomatoes complying with Lipinski’s rule of five, genistein, apigenin, and naringenin exhibited high oral absorption potential. Tomato contains genistein compound based on HP-TLC and the compound has high antioxidant and antidiabetic activities. Genistein has a stronger binding affinity with RAGE compared to AGE, indicating its potential as a competitive inhibitor. Additionally, genistein displayed stable ligand movements and higher binding energy values in MD simulations compared to the control. These findings suggest the potential of tomato bioactive compounds for further development as antidiabetic agents targeting AGE-RAGE interaction. In conclusion, genistein in tomatoes is indicated as a candidate for anti-complications of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Motivated by the recent discovery of the Rashba effect in two-dimensional (2D) Janus Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) systems, we explore the Rashba effect on the Janus VXY (X = S, Se, Y = Se, Te) monolayer. By employing first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we find a strong anisotropic Rashba splitting observed around Γ points in the first Brillouin zone. We analyze this anisotropy of Rashba splitting by using k·p perturbation theory synergized with group symmetry analysis. By giving the effect of the biaxial strain, we manipulate the characteristics of the Rashba splitting on the Janus Vanadium Dichalcogenides system. Through spin texture analysis, we reveal both the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the spin textures, providing further evidence for the anisotropic nature of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The observed tuneable Rashba splitting by applying the strain effect shows that the Janus Vanadium dichalcogenides system has the potential to be used as a semiconductor material for spintronic devices.

Abstract

This paper discusses the use of electroplating wastewater containing Cr and Cu as a single dopant source to improve the activity of TiO2 photocatalysts under visible light. Sol-gel doping was used to dop TiO2 with Cr and Cu in the wastewater. The doped TiO2 photocatalysts were characterized using SRUV/visible and XRD instruments, and their effect on the degradation of linear alkyl benzene sulphonate (LAS) in laundry wastewater was evaluated. The electroplating wastewater used in this research contains Cr and Cu about 2000 and 20 mg/L, respectively. These metals were successfully doped into a TiO2 structure, which significantly reduced the gap energy of TiO2, allowing it to be more active under visible light. The highest photodegradation of the 125 mg/L LAS in 25 mL of the laundry wastewater with pH 7 was achieved by using 30 mg of TiO2/Cr-Cu (200/2) photocatalyst, which degraded up to 60% of LAS in 60 min. With the same conditions, the LAS photodegradation increased to 100% upon the second run. This approach can help turn hazardous electroplating wastewater into a valuable material to solve environmental problems.

Abstract

This research evaluated the effects of hybrid fillers and mixing equipment on natural rubber (NR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) properties with an 80/20 ratio. Silica (Si), carbon black (C), china clay (CC), and calcium carbonate (Ca) were used as hybrid fillers. Mixing techniques using two-roll mill and an internal mixer were compared. The study focused on cure characteristics, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. The study found that incorporating hybrid fillers significantly improved the curing process. Blends prepared by an internal mixer had more consistent mechanical properties such as modulus, tear strength, and hardness compared to those prepared by two-roll mill. Blends with Si and C (NE-SiC) showed significant enhancements in tensile and tear strength. Although adding multiple fillers did not accelerate curing, it enhanced the modulus, indicating a potential synergistic effect. The internal mixer method resulted in better elongation at break, except for the NE-SiC-CC.Ca blend, which had reduced flexibility. Thermal analysis revealed higher thermal stability for blends with hybrid fillers, decomposing at elevated temperatures with larger residues, particularly in NE-SiC-CC and NE-SiC-CC.Ca blends. These research findings highlight the critical role of filler types and mixing methods in optimizing the performance of NR/EPDM rubber blends.

Abstract

Ehretia asperula Zoll. & Moritzi was a common medicinal herb found in several Asian nations. This herb was found in many provinces in northern Vietnam, especially Hoa Binh province. Leaves of E. asperula cultivated in Tay Ninh Province were used to isolate compounds and evaluate their potential as antioxidants by five methods, including TAC, RP, FRAP, DPPH, and ABTS•+. Seven compounds were isolated and elucidated from the ethyl acetate fraction, including kaempferol (1), astragalin (2), nicotiflorin (3), rutin (4), caffeic acid (5), (-)-loliolide (6), and daucosterol (7), where compounds 1, 4, 6, and 7 were found from this species for the first time. All isolated compounds from E. asperula leaves exhibited antioxidant activity, consisting of 5.70 ± 0.01 to 299.13 ± 10.19 μg/mL for EC50 values. Especially compound 5 had a very strong antioxidant effect based on five methods TAC (EC50 = 8.43 ± 0.15 μg/mL), RP (EC50 = 6.79 ± 003 μg/mL), FRAP (EC50 = 12.72 ± 006 μg/mL), DPPH (EC50 = 5.57 ± 0.02 µg/mL), and ABTS•+ (EC50 = 5.70 ± 0.01 μg/mL). From our results, Tay Ninh Province's E. asperula leaves are abundant in naturally occurring antioxidants, indicating their potential use as therapeutic materials.
