Abstract

In this study water repellent layered glass has been prepared by coating silica (SiO2) combined with a hydrophobic silane compound. SiO2 was extracted from rice hull ash and two silane compounds, namely hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) and trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) were used. Coating was performed through two deposition techniques, i.e. one step (mono-layer) and layer by layer (LBL, multi-layer). The effect of silane to SiO2 mole ratio, silane type and layer number on the glass characters was evaluated. Characterization included hydrophobicity, transparency, surface roughness and stability of coating. Results showed that increasing the mole ratio of silane to SiO2 and the layer number increased the hydrophobicity of the glass surface. The optimum mole ratio was 5:1 and the significant increase of contact angle occurred at lower mole ratio, but the stability tends to be increased at higher mole ratio. For HDTMS-SiO2 layer, the technique of LBL technique produced a coating with higher hydrophobicity and transparency than single-stage one. The LBL technique produced the highest water contact angle of 103.7° with transmittance of 96%, while for TMCS-SiO2 layer the one stage technique produced hydrophobic layer with higher water contact angle of 108.0° and transparency about 94.52%. The prepared hydrophobic glasses were relatively stable in polar and non-polar solvents, but unstable to ambient conditions.

Abstract

This paper report on polyol method for Pd doped tin oxide-graphene nanocomposite thin film. XRD result shows sharp peaks at certain 2θ value and match with tin oxide, graphene, and Pd database. FTIR result shows peak from alcohol chain for –OH strong bonded absorption (3444 cm-1), also there are aldehyde and ketone which are indicated by C=O strong absorption (1751 cm-1). Moreover, alkene is also formed for decreasing symmetry intensity C=C (1616 cm-1), while alkyne is formed at strong deformation absorption at 646 and 613 cm-1. SEM and TEM result show SnO2 particles are attached uniformly on graphene surface layer. The composition for C, O, Sn, and Pd are 33.13, 25.58, 35.35 and 5.94%, respectively. This result indicated that the good composition is formed for Pd doped SnO2-graphene nanocomposite. The nanocomposite is promising materials for toxic gas sensor application at low temperature.

Abstract

Bantar Gebang landfill located in Bekasi regency is a biggest sanitary landfill in Indonesia which comes up some refusals from local people because of its bad impact on their environment. Major ion contents in leachate and fresh groundwater were investigated during the rainy and dry season to determine contamination by leachate released from Bantar Gebang and Sumur Batu landfill. Leachate contained high concentrations of all major ions that was mainly characterized as a NaKHCO3 water type. On the other hand, most fresh groundwater samples were predominated by CaMgHCO3 and CaMgCl water type. Concentrations of K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, SO42-, Cl-, HCO3- and NO3- in leachate were to be in a maximum factor of 2110; 7; 6; 143; 20; 112; 349 and 20, respectively than its contents in groundwater. Leachate from Bantar Gebang was detected have a higher concentration than those contained in Sumur Batu that was probably due to its mature leachate. An estimated mixture of leachate to fresh water in monitoring wells (5 m and 15 m depth) was in the range of 20 to 34%, related to Na+ and Cl- signatures, while the shallow groundwater located in residents in the vicinity of these landfills exhibited maximum leachate about 2%.

Abstract

This study successfully improved the performance of oxidative desulfurization method to reduce sulfur content from residue oil (condensate) with modifications of oxidation and extraction steps which was repeated for several stages. Residue oil used in this study contain 386.2 ppm of initial sulfur content. In oxidation process, H2O2 as oxidizer and acid as catalyst were used within temperature range of 30–60 °C and time interval from 30 to 120 min. In extraction process, various alcohol solvents (methanol, ethanol, and propanol) were used with the temperature of 30 °C in 30 min for every residue oil ratio to solvent (v/v). The best reducing sulfur result achieved was 35.9 ppm or 90.7% desulfurization. This result was achieved after 4 recursively extractions using ethanol as solvent. This study successfully reduced sulfur content in residue oil to meet the international standard (< 50 ppm).

Abstract

The high-throughput experimentation technique was used to verify the testing conditions due to the effects of catalyst structure modifications and/or due to reaction parameter variation in parallel. In this paper, the design of experiment and catalytic results are discussed in the development of selective oxidation catalyst, to demonstrate the importance and versatility of such technology. It is used for the automated parallel testing of selective oxidation of propane to acrylic acid over some types of multi metal oxide catalysts. The catalysts used for performance test were Mo (molybdenum), cat-1 (unsupported Mo1V0.3Te0.23Nb0.125O), and cat-2 (supported Mo1V0.3Te0.23Nb0.125O). All catalysts were dried using spray drier. The effect of some reaction parameters, such as the amount of oxidant, presence of steam and reaction temperature was also investigated during the test. The configuration of the ‘nanoflow’ is shown to be suitable to screen catalytic performance. The results obtained gave very good reproducibility.

Abstract

Reductive adsorption of [AuCl4]-– by using ascorbic acid immobilized on Mg/Al hydrotalcite (Mg/Al HT) and synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) from the reduced gold using sodium citrate have been conducted. Mg/Al HT was synthesized by co-precipitation method at pH 10 with molar ratio of Mg(II) and Al(III) 2:1. Ascorbic acid (AA) was then immobilized on Mg/Al HT to form hybrid of AA and Mg/Al HT (Mg/Al HT-AA). Mg/Al HT-AA was used to reductively adsorb [AuCl4]– and the formed Au(0) was extracted by using sodium citrate to form citrate-capped AuNPs. The formation of AuNPs from 100 mg/L [AuCl4]– solution removed by 60 mg Mg/Al HT-AA was optimum at pH 5.0, by using 70 mM sodium citrate and 2 h sonication time. This optimum condition was successfully applied to synthesize AuNPs from [AuCl4]– as the leaching product of gold from PCB using aquaregia.

Abstract

Three piperidone curcumin analogues (N-methyl-(3E,5E)-3,5-bis-(2-chlorobenzylidene)-4-piperidone (1), N-methyl-(3E,5E)-3,5-bis-(3-bromobenzylidene)-4-piperidone (2) and N-methyl-(3E,5E)-3,5-bis-(4-chlorobenzylidene)-4-piperidone (3)) were synthesized from N-methyl-4-piperidone with halogenbenzaldehyde, 2-chlorobenzaldehyde, 3-bromobenzaldehyde and 4-chlorobenzaldehyde. The Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction was used in alkali condition with combinatorial. All the compounds showed light yellow needle, light yellow powder, and yellow crystal form with percentage of yield 39, 66, and 40%, respectively. All the structure compounds were confirmed by using UV, IR, 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR and MS. Apart from that, the cytotoxicity results against breast cancer cell (T47D) showed strong to moderate activity with the IC50 value 8, 4, and 45 µg/mL, respectively.

Abstract

Poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [PMMA-b-PNIPAM] block copolymers were obtained by a combination of redox polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods in two steps. For this purpose, PMMA macroinitator (ATRP-macroinitiator) was synthesized by redox polymerization of methyl methacrylate and 3-bromo-1-propanol using Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6 as a catalyst. The synthesis of PMMA-b-PNIPAM block copolymers was carried out by means of ATRP of ATRP-macroinitiator and NIPAM at 60 °C. The block copolymers were obtained in high yield and high molecular weight. The characterization of products was accomplished by using multi instruments and methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract

Beef meatball is one of the favorite meat-based food products among Indonesian community. Currently, beef is very expensive in Indonesian market compared to other common meat types such as chicken and lamb. This situation has intrigued some unethical meatball producers to replace or adulterate beef with lower priced-meat like dog meat. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capability of FTIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics for identification and quantification of dog meat (DM) in beef meatball (BM). Meatball samples were prepared by adding DM into BM ingredients in the range of 0–100% wt/wt and were subjected to extraction using Folch method. Lipid extracts obtained from the samples were scanned using FTIR spectrophotometer at 4000–650 cm-1. Partial least square (PLS) calibration was used to quantify DM in the meatball. The results showed that combined frequency regions of 1782–1623 cm-1 and 1485-659 cm-1 using detrending treatment gave optimum prediction of DM in BM. Coefficient of determination (R2) for correlation between the actual value of DM and FTIR predicted value was 0.993 in calibration model and 0.995 in validation model. The root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) and standard error of cross validation (SECV) were 1.63% and 2.68%, respectively. FTIR spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis can serve as an accurate and reliable method for analysis of DM in meatball.

Abstract

Pancreatic cancer arises when cells in the pancreas begin to multiply out of control. In pancreatic cancer, over expression of heat proteins (Hsp70, Hsp 90), constitutive activation of NFĸB, and Bcl-2 family are closely linked with resistance to apoptosis. Apoptotic resistance has been attributed to defects in apoptotic signaling pathways. Bruceine D, which found in abundance Brucea javanica, possesses potent anti-pancreatic cancer activity. In vitro result, bruceine D could induce apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cell. The aim of this study was to find the potential effect of bruceine D inhibitor on apoptotic resistance proteins in pancreatic cancer based on molecular docking. Docking showed a binding affinity between bruceine D with proteins involved in apoptosis using AutoDock. The results showed that free binding energy of Hsp70 is -5.19; Hsp90 -7.26; NFĸB1 -5.49; NFĸB2 -6.14; Bcl-W -6.02; Bcl-xL -5.45 kcal/mol. Based on the result, we conclude that bruceine D with Hsp90 protein has potential the best binding affinity than other proteins.
