ANTROPOLOGI INDONESIA was published to develop and enrich scientific discussion for scholars who put interest on socio-cultural issues in Indonesia. These journals apply peer-reviewed process in selecting high quality article. Editors welcome theoretical or research based article submission. Author’s argument doesn’t need to be in line with editors. The criteria of the submitted article covers the following types of article: first, the article presents the results of an ethnographic/qualitative research in certain topic and is related with ethnic/social groups in Indonesia; second, the article is an elaborated discussion of applied and collaborative research with strong engagement between the author and the collaborator’s subject in implementing intervention program or any other development initiative that put emphasizes on social, political, and cultural issues; third, a theoretical writing that elaborates social and cultural theory linked with the theoretical discourse of anthropology, especially in Indonesia anthropology; last, the article is a critical review of anthropological reference and other ethnography books that must be published at least in the last 3 years.

Abstract

Pulau Enggano ialah pulau paling selatan dari rangkaian busur kepulauan di sebelah barat pantai Sumatra, setelah Simeulue, Nias dan Mentawai. Terletak di Samudra Hindia dengan perairan laut dalam membuatnya digambarkan sebagai pulau yang terisolasi. Penduduk aslinya, atau suku bangsa Enggano, dikenal dalam catatan kolonial sebagai masyarakat yang keras terhadap kedatangan orang-orang Eropa ke pulau mereka. Studi literatur mengenai Enggano terbatas hanya pada catatan kunjungan dan cerita-cerita mengenai kebudayaan masa lampau mereka yang sudah tidak dipraktikkan lagi. Beberapa studi, terutama antropologi, arkeologi, dan linguistik, mencoba mengaitkan Enggano dengan Nias dan Mentawai karena lokasi geografis mereka yang berdekatan sehingga diasumsikan bahasa atau kebudayaan pada ketiga masyarakat tersebut memiliki kemiripan dalam derajat tertentu. Hingga kini, posisi Enggano dari masyarakat lainnya di wilayah Pulau Sumatra, yang digolongkan ke dalam anggota keluarga rumpun Austronesia, masih belum jelas. Di samping itu, Bahasa Enggano ternyata memiliki keunikan tersendiri yang membuatnya seolah berbeda sama sekali bahkan dari Nias dan Mentawai. Studi linguistik pun belum mencapai kesimpulan apakah Enggano termasuk ke dalam rumpun bahasa Austronesia atau tidak. Sementara itu, beberapa ciri kebudayaan mereka, seperti sistem organisasi sosial matrilineal dan cara hidup sebagai pemburu peramu, diasumsikan memiliki keterkaitan dengan peristiwa kontak awal antara populasi pra-Austronesia dan penutur bahasa Austronesia di bagian barat Nusantara ketika migrasi Austronesia terjadi. Namun demikian, perlu studi lebih lanjut mengenai sejarah migrasi populasi suku bangsa Enggano melalui studi genetik yang dapat menggambarkan campuran gen pada suatu populasi sehingga bagaimana keterkaitan Enggano dengan masyarakat di bagian barat Nusantara dapat dijawab dan tergambar secara lebih jelas.

Abstract

This paper aims to contribute to the theory of common property that has been developed since the 1960s by explaining the dynamics involved in the management of resources that are in transition, from being held “in common” (common pool resources) to being privately owned (as private property) or vice versa, through compromises made among the actors in the communal legitimacy. Qualitative research was conducted in Ujung Alang and Klaces village, Kampung Laut sub district, the Cilacap regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The findings of this study indicate that landscape changes can cause changes in the agrarian structure in the form of changes in resource ownership as the resources convert from common property to private property. At the same time, some other resources are transformed from private property to common property. Both processes are possible due to the roles of actors who are capable of using their power relations. Hardin’s previously established Tragedy of the Commons model can be expanded into a dynamic theory through the incorporation of the theory of the actors’ access to power relations.

Abstract

This paper discusses the involvement of imagination in the implementation of several techniques for societal improvement introduced by intervention programs in Indonesia. Using the perspective of socio-technical imagination, I contend that the implementation of the World Bank’s Community-Driven Development (CDD) in Indonesia does not only revolve around technical matters, but also structured by collective imagination held by various development actors regarding the formation of desired social order. This paper is part of my reflexivity regarding my involvement as a researcher and filmmaker in a research project designed to evaluate the impact of the implementation of CDD program in health and education sector in Indonesia. The research was conducted from the end of 2016 to the mid of 2017. Based on this experience, this paper examines the way in which imaginations invoked in programs implementation influence the process of film making that involved various development actors ranging from the World Bank’s technocrats in Jakarta, program’s implementer in province, district, sub-district, and village level, to target groups of intervention program in the village.

Abstract

Indonesia has a great diversity of ethnic groups, languages, physical characteristics, and human genetic structures. Various studies of human physical variation and their evolutionary history in the world have received substantial contributions from biological anthropology researches in Indonesia. However, biological anthropology studies in Indonesia are not established or less familiar even among Indonesian anthropology milieu. This condition is reflected in a small numbers of Indonesian biological anthropologists, despite the vision of the founders of Indonesian anthropology that programmed the development of biological anthropology as a part of the anthropology department. This article aims to review the history of biological anthropology studies in Indonesia. Therefore, as a preliminary note, considerable scientific publications in biological anthropology in Indonesia will be discussed briefly to demonstrate the development of Indonesian biological anthropology.

Abstract

This article is my retrospective account on the making of one of my testimonial documentaries, “Kameng Gampoeng Nyang Keunong Geulawa” (The Village Goat that Takes the Beating, 1999) which was commissioned by a human rights-defender NGO based in Jakarta. The aim was to offer critical views on the Aceh conflict to the Indonesian public. By using chronotopes (Bakhtin, 1981) as the analytical tool, I delineate the way the Indonesian state and its military constituted a dominant view of Aceh as the Other by applying a semiotic model of authoritarian nationalism that circulated in the public sphere. As the counter-politics, I developed particular testimony chronotopes as a strategy to capture victims’ points of view as embodied experience. In my reflection, I argue that instead of producing a complex visuality of the Aceh actors as human beings, my portrayal of the victims had taken on a sustained oppressor-victim binary opposition view which framed victims as the articulation of singular experience. This study contributes to the emerging interest in media anthropology and the study of non-mainstream film genres and independent cinema works.

Abstract

This paper discusses the migration process and the recognition of identity of Biak people in Sausapor along with the impact of it. Dichotomy of local and outsider is still a clear barrier separating Biak and Abun people in Miossu islands and Sausapor, the capital district of Tambrauw, West Papua. Biak people are considered as outsider with regards to the land ownership issue in Sausapor. On the other side, they are also considered as insider in Kampung Werur which is located in the same region with Sausapor. There are two different identity layers related to the problem of land ownership and ethnicity sentiment. The problem of locals and outsiders in this paper is coming from the small scale point of view and is examined through the perspective of the indigenous Papuans. Data was collected through in-depth interview and observation during a short visit in Kampung Werur and Sausapor as a part of Ekspedisi Nusa Manggala 2018. This paper concludes that the identity of Biak people should be seen through the contextualization and with whom they interact. Their identity as Biak People comes as manifestation of confession and recognition within themselves and by the others.

Abstract

Studies have shown the importance of identity politics in the ability for small-holders to form a solidarity in a collective action protest against development project. However, those studies do not show how the kinship relations in the context of adat system could shape the agency of small-holder to organize collective resistance against the development project that affects their livelihoods. Although we are not denying the importance of traditional kinship relations in developing solidarity among agrarian communities in Indonesia to carry out a public protest, kinship relations system might also be used by other interest such as government, contractor, and traditional leader for shaping some forms of resistance action. Drawing from ethnographic study of the small-holders protests against a governmental irrigation project in West Sumatera, we attempt to show how social relations in the traditional kinship system have significantly shaped their ability to carry out open public protest and gain collective support. Small-holder ability to act need to be analyzed in the complex power relations dynamic among actors involved who are embedded in the traditional kinship relationships that were practiced. Small-holders agency of resistance was hindered by the government and project contractor strategy to incorporate the key traditional leaders into the project.

Abstract

This paper explores the conceptual and methodological thinking of an ethnography of a collaborative film making with traditional Javanese performance groups, adapting their work from the stage to the screen. This paper specifically offers ethnography as practical research involving researchers and research subjects conducting film projects together. This project has indeed practical and research objectives. The practical goal is to collaborate with traditional rural performance groups, to help facilitate the exploration of their new media and express themselves through film. The research objective of this project is to record, understand and analyze the process, while laying the foundation for further collaboration and research in other contexts and with different communities.

Abstract

Profile cloning scam is one of the cybercrimes developing along with the expanding use of social media through various platforms, including Facebook. As a crime, profile cloning scam is also resulted from a learning process. This article discusses profile cloning scam as a result of a learning process experienced by inmates in prison. It uses primary data collected by observation and in-depth interview from four case studies. Those four studied cases have commonality among them: they were conducted by inmates while serving their terms for other crimes, and they were conducted by duplicating account or stealing identity of law enforcers. The main finding of this study shows that profile cloning scam, as a cybercrime, does not require the mastery of sophisticated skills concerning information technology by its perpetrators beforehand. It opposes established theorization of cybercrime that tends to emphasize the perpetrator’s special skills and also the crime’s characteristics that are systematic and organized. Thereby, instead of emphasizing the sophistication of the crime and the established skill of its perpetrators, this article try to understand profile cloning scam by focusing on its perpetrator’s learning process within the context of prison culture. It includes the importance of understanding of the context and situation within the prison life that enables the learning process takes place.

Abstract

Adat is Indonesian concept for customary law, a living law practiced by people in their communities. For decades after independence of Indonesia in 1945, the role of adat was gradually changed and replaced by national legal laws. It, however, did not really abolish the existence of adat in daily practices of particular communities. Since the 1998 Reformation, adat has been becoming a central academic and policy discussions as the changing of political system in Indonesia introduces regional autonomy policy in the regency level. Adat, since then, is extensively used to various activisms and practices. For examples, the indigenous people movement employs the term ‘masyarakat adat’ to replace ‘indigenous people’; and as it appears in some regencies, adat is used as the basis for developing new local regulations. Our findings in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, indicated that adat is used to represent at least five ideas with different meaning and degree of obedience. Adat in our discussion refer to traditional inventions in a community, re-creation of the old Kutai Sultanate regulations, local regulations issued by local governments, agreements between parties when an event occurs, and strategies developed by activists to dealing with power. Although they are contesting and competing in everyday life, we argue that it was aimed mainly for the sake of practicality rather than for ideological reasons.
