Abstract

In its development, migration theories have been experienced flux and reflux–from economic point of view to individual as actor. Yet, development of migration theory disregards one important factor: women. This article has two objectives. Firstly, criticizing migration theory which neglects women, either as actor or subject who constructing migration theory. Secondly, offering feminist approach to migration theory and its implications. This article consists of three parts. Part one will explore classical migration theories which put emphasis on economy and contemporary migration theory which emphasizes migration actor. Abstract

Women often considered as ‘non-actor’ in the struggle to get access to land and its utilization. The lack of peasant women’s role in the land reform can be seen as cultural limitation of the land tenure system which based on men’s perspective. Though peasant women seem invisible in the land reform struggle, they are actively making choices and decisions from ‘behind the stage’ particularly in relation to their own land cultivation. Activating their multiple identities –e.g. as women abandoned by their husbands and have to meet family needs– peasant women are able to build relationships with parties that can help them to solve their problems and achieve their objectives. This study was conducted in Blitar of East Java in March 2005. In this study, women refer to peasant women who economically abandoned by their husband and elderly widows.

Abstract

This paper argues that in the era of decentralization of developmental democratization at the local level through forums involving citizens have not yet formally involved strategic roles of women. The author reviews on how women’s strategic role on the local level has not been entirely met by mechanisms of formal channels at the village level. Taking a case study in Indramayu, the author outlines issues of democratization through various citizen forums that show problems of political participation that turn out to limit the role of women. The transformation of the public decision making structure on the local level should collaboratively involve aspirations of women who are still engaged in informal political context.

Abstract

This article discusses the cultural history sketch of Orang Suku Laut (the Sea Tribe) and its implications for social relations patterns with the Malays in Riau Islands, Indonesia. Problems arise now in nomadic ethnic tribe when they interacting with the Malays. Many Malays people perceive Orang Suku Laut as a backward or primitive people. This point of view emerged from a long history of Orang Suku Laut in Riau Islands, and at present, the discourse is supported by the government which resettled them from the sea to the land as part of the modernization of disadvantaged areas in the New Order era. This government label to them was later influenced the Malays perception. Moreover, negative assumption also appears along with the cultural identity differences between both of the tribes, of which the Malays condense with Islamic tradition, while Orang Suku Laut doesn’t. At this situation, thus the identity of Orang Suku Laut is staked within socio-cultural dispute or contestation (the attraction process) among themselves in practicing their everyday lives.

Abstract

Previous studies on Indonesian music focused on cultural heritage and traditional preservation or western-style modern music such as pop and rock music. Both were perceived as separate genre, even modern music often downplayed traditional one. The author argues analysis of hybrid genre like keroncong and dangdut would provide more complicated picture than such dichotomy. He explained long history of cultural exchanges in various parts of Indonesia which showed these two genres influenced each other. As a case study the author presents urban music as main character of urban social lives in Indonesia. This article depicts street music and campursari in Yogyakarta and linking it to popular cultures in some cities. Popular culture refers to informal recreation in different social settings. Eventually, this article reveals new ways to understand relation between music style and social identity in urban Indonesia. Key words: intercultural exchange, popular culture, translocal, music style, identity

Abstract

This article describes social resistance in Tapal Kuda community against The People Consultative Assembly (Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat) who deposed President Wahid (Gus Dur) in 2001. Their resistance resulted in loss of human life as well as the destruction of religious buildings, educational institutions, and other public facilities, which are believed to have historical connections to their opponents, i.e. Muhammadiyah or its leader, Amien Rais. The Tapal Kuda community shares typical cultural characteristics such as Maduranese, Muslim, “remain traditional”, based on Ulama, and made their kiai (religious leader) as the highest role-model. Additionally, they have developed network of religious boarding schools of Tarekat Naqsyabandiah wal Qadiriah and classifying them into hierarchy of “core schools” (pesantren induk) and their sub-levels.The resistance shows symbolic manipulations made up by local elite leaders for fabricating profane symbols into a sacred ones in a way that unmistakebly drawing political dimension into intra-religious conflicts. The tension appeared in how they define themselves as minna (saya, as self) and minkum (kamu, the others). This definition had became a moral basis that justified their act in destroying the opponents as the others. It is important to see how value of Islamic solidarity within traditional muslim community in Madura tends to get firmer while paradoxically the wholeness of Muslim brotherhood is under threat. Key words: Tapal Kuda, Madura, kiai, pesantren, resistance, Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah

Abstract

This study is aimed at identifying linguistic features, indexing ethnic identities, and inter-ethnic solidarity in transmigration contexts. Data were collected through interview, documentation and ethnography of various transmigrate communities on Sumbawa island. The data were then analyzed qualitatively with the ethnography of speaking and interaction analysis. The study found that (a) Ethnic identities in the migrant areas can be linguistically identified in four forms: orang aida (to refer to Sumbawa people), orang kalembo ade (for Bima people), dengan batur (for Sasak people) and orang beli (Balinese people). (b) These people were identifiable in the way they articulate particular sounds: orang beli (the Balinese) were identified in terms of dominant use of alveolar retroflexed, orang batur (the Sasak) were identified in the way they marked use of alveolar retroflexed, and orang kalembo ade (the Bima people) were identified through their articulation of closed central vowel as open low front vowel. It was also found that the forms had been used to construct ethnicity and interethnic solidarity between participants. The use of ana and ente in interaction indicated solidarity regardless of differences in age and social status. Key words: language and society, contextualization, ethnicity, solidarity, inter-cultural communication, transmigration

Abstract

This article examines a dispute over proper religious practice in an all-Muslim village in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi. Traditionalists and modernists disagree over whether agricultural ceremonies involving offerings for territorial spirits should be allowed to continue. Local views on this dispute are explored with reference to the historical context of religious practice in the village, and processes of social change over the past several generations. It is argued that key social, political and economic dynamics which are relevant to the current religious dispute include the decline of agriculture in the village, the eclipsing of the Butonese Sultanate and integration into the Indonesian state, and new patterns of mobility whereby many villagers have become migrants to urban centers in eastern Indonesia. Thus it traces how processes of the increasing penetration of capitalism, the decline of traditional authority, and new patterns of mobility have played out in this particular village in the context of a dispute over religious practice. Key words: Islam, trade, Buton, Indonesia, agriculture, religion, migration
