This study analyses the relationship between clause structures and social construction of the meaning found in verbal speeches. Drawing on Halliday's transitivity system particularly the processes element rooted in Systemic Functional Linguistics, the present study attempts to investigate the distribution of transitivity processes found in viral speech of Greta Thunberg at 2019 United Nation Climate Summit held in New York City. Moreover, through descriptive qualitative analysis, the study aims to reveal the function expressed by the processes found in the speech. To this end, it is found that only five out of six process types namely material, mental, relational, verbal, and behavioral processes found in the speech. Moreover, Thunberg used relational processes, mental processes, and material processes more than verbal processes and behavioral processes. The five processes further serve different functions in the speech. Yet, all of the processes occurred in the speech are generally used to deliver Thunberg’s critics over the world leader’s slow response in handling the climate issue. Besides, the processes also used to convince the audience and people in general to start doing something for the climate. The implication of this research is expected to give the information on how language structure is used by the environmental activist in her agenda to persuade people.

The fundamental aim of the present study is to analyze the pragmatic aspects of the English social media comments on posts related to online learning at the time of Covid19. The aim in this socio-pragmatic study is to identify the maxims and strategies used by English commenters and the extent to which the commenters follow or flout these and strategies when commenting on posts related to online learning at time of COVID 19. It also aims at investigating how the social media, as a new marvelous vital trend, contributes to increase language and linguistic variation in people's online comments. To achieve these the researchers analyze 25 Facebook comments based on two adopted models; Grice's (1975) maxims and Crystal's strategies (2001) to build a comprehensive picture about the role of age, gender, social status on the comments. The results of the analysis show that both models are applicable and sometimes flouted. Some commenters flout more than two maxims in the same comment and the same is true regarding Crystal's model. It has been found that comments are highly constrained by social factor, while age and gender do not have great significant effect.

The 2011 science fiction novel of Drew Magary named The Postmortal drew a world wherein the cure for aging has been scientifically and technologically advanced through gene therapy by the medical practitioner Graham Otto. This paper hinges on the ‘vanishing mediator’ as a theoretical framework synthesized by Kahambing which runs in four distinct stages for its entire process, namely, to: a.) retroactively trace the intervention, b.) evaluate the intervention, c.) identify the mediator, and d.) locate the vanishing point. Applying this to the movement, the methodological structure of the paper is divided into four parts. First, it provides a primary discussion of the social “normal” condition of people in the novel to traceably locate the intervention made by Graham Otto, a doctor, to completely halt the aging process. Second, the researcher presented a technological intervention of gene therapy in the character of Doctor Otto in making a scientific cure for aging. Third, the said intervention is argued to be a vanishing mediator. Finally, it gave a full account of the major implications of a Bostromean transhuman process and its traces in the world at large.

The study object in this research is the representation of social class in the illustration of Sketches by Boz by Charles Dickens (1895). Social class is one of the most prominent themes raised by Charles Dickens in his work to satirize the condition of Victorian England as a form of empathy towards the lower class people. Dickens tries to portray that phenomenon into a series of story and illustration of people’s everyday life in his work ‘Sketches by Boz’. However, this social phenomenon is always depicted and discussed mostly in term of the narration form. On the contrary, illustration is often being ignored. The aim of this study is to bring together the importance of illustration in its relationship to the text. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative. It will examine how social class is portrayed in the illustration of Dickens’ Sketches by Boz by focusing particularly on the variety of techniques used by the illustrators in producing the illustrations. The result shows that both narration and illustration highlights the social class reality in the Victorian era. The narration and the illustration cannot be separated in Charles Dickens’ Sketches by Boz since it is created to be a description of people’s everyday life in Victorian London.
