Abstract

There are two kinds of Theme: Unmarked Theme and Marked Theme. It is divided into two subtypes: simple Theme and multiple Theme. The theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is used, regarded with textual function that observes clause as a message and analyzes it from the thematic structure in the term of Theme-Rheme. The method of descriptive qualitative is applied. The source of data were Everything, Everything movie script, taken from Springfield Springfield site. Data of the research were selected, based on the second character dialog. The purpose of this research is to indicate the types and to describe the realization of the Theme markedness. The research findings showed, the dominant type of markedness realization is simple unmarked Theme with 69.4% percentage. It dominates the other markedness realization, that is simple marked Theme with 2.4% percentage, multiple unmarked Theme with 27.1% percentage, and multiple marked Theme with 0.9% percentage.

Abstract

 Abstract   This research dealt with the common phenomena in the contributions of speaking skill on students’ future careers. The objectives of this study were: (1) to find out students of English Department perceptions about the contribution of speaking skills to their career; (2) to find out the effects of the contribution of speaking skill to students of English Department career performance. The data were obtained from the utterances of thirty graduates English department students of University of North Sumatra that has involved in the professional world. The research applied qualitative research design. The data were collected through collecting the questionnaire. The findings of this study showed that: (1) all participants had a positive perception on the contribution of speaking skill to their career; (2) Speaking skill could enhance students’ communication and interaction, speaking skill support in conducting a successful interview, speaking skill help students in doing job interview, by being able expressing themselves. Abstract

ABSTRACT This will discuss multimodal analysis where there are visual and verbal, This study aims to see changes in the visual function of the WHO banner itself which is conveyed through objects that are following the objectives themselves. In this study, the authors also used a qualitative descriptive approach where all data were analyzed with the theory of Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). Abstract

The main objective of this study was to describe the implementation of virtual debate in teaching speaking and to identify students’ speaking skill improvement after being taught by using virtual debate. To achieve the objective of the study, a qualitative descriptive method was used. The data was gathered through debate speeches given by eight debaters from SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Kualuh Hulu. It includes the Opening Government team (Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister), the Opening Opposition team (Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition), Closing Government (Government Member and Government Whip), and Closing Opposition (Closing Government and Closing Whip) taken from the practicing debate for 4 meetings. The data in this study were the transcription of debate activities. The steps taken in this analysis were collecting data by transcribing debate speeches into text, identifying improvisation and fluency, and concluding the analysis. The results showed that the improvisation and fluency of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Government Member, Government Whip, Closing Government, and Closing Whip were in medium levels from the beginner level. In both improvisation and fluency levels, debate speeches showed considerable improvisation and fluency.

Abstract

This research was intended to find out the types of presupposition in the character’s utterances of Beauty and the Beast movie script and describe the meaning of presupposition that are represented in the movie script. This research used a descriptive qualitative method, which was carried out by collecting, grouping, analyzing and interpreting the research data. The data in this research were the utterances of the characters in movie script containing presupposition. The data were collected through four steps:  observation, taking note, data validation and setting them in tables. Based on the data analysis, it was found that 6 types of presupposition were used in the character’s utterances of the movie script. The most frequent type of presupposition used by the characters was existential presupposition with 26 data of 58 data found in this movie script. The second type of presupposition often used was factive presupposition with 9 data found in the data. Then, the third was lexical presupposition consisting of 8 data and the fourth was structural presupposition with the same number. The fifth type of presupposition used was non-factive presupposition with 4 data found in this research. The last type of presupposition used in this research was counter-factual presupposition with 3 data found in the movie script.

Abstract

This paper entitled ‘Non-Verbal Communication by Autistic Children’ was conducted with the aim to find out the components of kinesics as a part of nonverbal communication expressed by autistic children when interacting with their teachers at SLB ABC Taman Pendidikan Islam. Beside that this study also intended to know the meanings of those kinesics components expressed by autistic children when interacting with their teachers. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach by applying kinesics theory by Ray Birdwhistell. The data collection techniques were conducted by using non-participant observation techniques and documentation. The documents used to support this study were in the form of photographs and video recorder that showed the communication done by the autistic children with their teachers during the learning process in the class. The results showed that although autistic children cannot interact clearly through verbal communication, they can express their desires through non verbal communication. They can communicate by expressing it through facial expressions, eye contact, body movement, posture and touch. The meaning of the non-verbal communication expressed by each autistic child has a different meaning. This study also intended to give worthy contribution to all people who want to understand the non-verbal communication of autistic children.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Selatan. The type of this research was classroom action research. It was found a problem that PKn learning outcomes in Class VII of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Selatan in Gunungsitoli Selatan sub-district were very low. This study aims to determine whether the use of the Team Game Tournament (TGT) method can improve student learning outcomes in Class VII of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Selatan. The subjects of this study were Class VII students with 38 students consisting of 18 female students and 20 male students. From the research carried out obtained learning results after the action was taken. in the first cycle has increased, which is that the initial test only reached 58.4 in the first cycle to 63.8 with 62.2% learning completeness. The results of this first cycle show that student learning outcomes have not reached the minimum completeness criteria (KKM). While in the second cycle the grade average value increased to 70.4 with learning completeness 80.6% (29 out of 36 students). Keywords: Jigsaw Abstrak: Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Selatan, jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas, ditemukan masalah bahwa hasil belajar PKn di Kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Selatan kecamatan Gunungsitoli Selatan sangat rendah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan model Team Game Tournament (TGT) dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa di Kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Selatan. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa Kelas VII dengan jumlah siswa 38 orang terdiri dari 18 siswa perempuan dan 20 siswa laki-laki. Dari penelitian yang dilaksanakan diperoleh hasil belajar setelah dilaksanakan tindakan. pada siklus I telah mengalami peningkatan, yaitu yang pada tes awal baru mencapai 58,4 pada siklus I menjadi 63,8 dengan ketuntasan belajar 62,2 %. Hasil siklus I ini menunjukkan bahwa hasil belajar siswa belum mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM). Sedangkan pada siklus II nilai rata-rata kelas meningkat menjadi 70,4 dengan ketuntasan belajar 80,6% (29 dari 36 siswa). Kata kunci: Jigsaw

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini berjudul “The Ability of SMPN 2 Lubuk Pakam Students in Using -s Inflectional Ending”. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan akhiran infleksional –s dan kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh siswa kelas dua SMPN 2 Lubuk Pakam. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian gabungan. Data diambil dari tes dan wawancara. Tes digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan siswa dan wawancara digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi kesulitan siswa. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua SMPN 2 Lubuk Pakam tahun ajaran 209/2020. Peneliti mengambil 0% dari populasi (29 siswa). Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, persentase siswa dengan jawaban yang benar adalah 60,06%. Artinya kempuan siswa kelas dua SMPN 2 Lubuk Pakam tergolong dalam kategori sedang. Kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan –s Kata Benda Jamak memiliki persentase tertinggi (63%). Kemampuan siswa dalam –s Posesif memiliki persentase 56%. –s Orang Ketiga Tunggal memiliki persentase terendah (54%). Disimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas dua SMPN 2 Lubuk Pakam telah memahami akhiran –s dalam Kata Benda Jamak tetapi belum memahami akhiran –s dalam kata Posesif dan Orang Ketiga Tunggal. The method used in this research was mixed method. The data were taken from test and interview. Tes is used to measure students’ abilities and interview to identify students’ difficulties. The sources of data were the students at the second year of SMPN 2 Lubuk Pakam in the academic year 2019/2020. The researcher took 10% of the population (29 students). Based on the result of the data analysis, the percentage of the students’ correct answers was 60.06% and was classified as fair category. The student’s ability in –s plural nouns had the highest percentage (63%). The student’s ability in –s possessive had the percentage of 56%. The–s third person singular had the lowest percentage (54%). It can be concluded that the second year students of SMPN 2 Lubuk Pakam had understood –s plural nouns but did not comprehend –s possessive and –s third person singular yet. The causes were lacking knowledge of –s inflectional endings and vocabulary.Keywords: -s Inflectional Endings, Students’ Difficulties

Abstract

This research examines the use of apology strategies applied by Kevin Rudd in his speech of stolen generation. Kevin Rudd is an Australian former politician who was the 26th Prime Minister of Australian, serving from December 2007 to June 2010. This study is conducted to find out (1) the types of apology strategies Kevin Rudd used in his speech, and (2)the way on how apology strategies used by Kevin Rudd in his speech. This study applies descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the transcript of Kevin Rudd’s speech. This study uses Trosborg’s theory on apology strategies. The result of apology strategy analysis in Kevin Ruud’s speech shows that he has used the apology strategy in delivering his speech. This study reveals that there are seven categories and nine sub-categories of apology strategies on Kevin Rudd’s speech. The strategies are acknowledgement of responsibility, promise and forbearance, expressing concern for the hearer, minimizing the degree of offense, explanation or account, as well as offer of repair as the type of apology strategy which are employed. Based on Trosborg’s theory, the most dominant apology strategy used by Kevin Rudd in his speech was “expression of apology”.
