Abstract

The complain of the lecturers on English students’ grammar reflected in their understanding of reading text and their writing product stimulated grammar lecturers to find out the ways to make students use the grammar learned. The paper aims at exploring the learning tasks of text analysis and text created assigned to students of undergraduate level. This activity is the stepping stone to get the rank scale of the clause structure in inductive way. The topics discussed can be in the level of phrase, clause, or clause complex. After comprehending the level of scale structure, the students are directed to identify the rules they have learned by analyzing the text. To use what they have learned, students are assigned to create the text related to the topics. There are various activities that can be done, such as individual, pair-up, or group activities. Practices may be in spoken and written activities. As it was implemented in my grammar class, the result indicates that students were motivated and reflective in using the language. In the low level of structure, such as phrases and simple clause, it worked quite well. It didn’t take much time for the students to analyze the text for the rules and created the text assigned. In clause complex structure, however, it took a little longer for them to do the analysis. But the result is good. It is also a challenge for students to create independent activities outside the class, especially for the bright students.

Abstract

A good learning model is a model developed based on the analysis of learning needs and feasibility. There are many instructional models proposed by the instructional designer but it is not a guarantee that those models are suitable with the characteristics of the course. This article discusses the students’ needs on the process-genre based model for teaching essay writing. This study was a survey research conducted at the English Language Teaching Study Program of State University of Padang. The data of the study were obtained from students’ responses on the questionnaires regarding the students’ needs on learning essay writing. The re-sults of the study show that (1) there are some explanation and examples that should be considered as the input in teaching and learning process, (2) students need to be able to develop a wide variety of text types, (3) students need to learn different topics of essay writing so that they can enrich their world knowledge, and (4) students need the appropriate tasks/activities that directly help improve their knowledge and skills in developing various text types. Thus the appropriate need analysis can be used effectively in developing a process-genre model for teaching essay writing. Keywords: Teaching Model, Multimedia, Need Analysis, Sociolinguistics

Abstract

The aim of this paper is particularly to provide a holistic representation of pedagogic competence related tothe use of authentic texts. Based on Undang-Undang Guru dan Dosen (UUGD) No.14, 2005, teachers are pro-fessional educators who have the main responsibilities to educate, teach, supervise, train, assess, and evaluate students. Teachers, therefore, ought to possess standard academic qualifications and a set of competence to achieve such objectives. Competence is set of a professional knowledge, skills, and behavior that must be pos-sessed, internalized, mastered, and actualized by teachers. One of those competences is pedagogic competence which focuses on the knowledge and the ability of the teacher to construct or assemble teaching resources. In relation to pedagogic competence, professional teachers should creatively adapt textbook material and other audio, visual, or mechanical aids as teaching material. Authentic texts are one of those materials that can be used by teachers to create variety. By using authentic texts teachers are enforced to create innovative teach-ing methods which also part of pedagogical skill. In other words, the use of authentic texts will also influence another ability of the teachers especially in pedagogical competence.
