Abstract

Through the analysis of lexical density, students’ progress in language learning, especially in writing can be identified. This article aimed to find out lexical density of students’ writing and to explain how  lexical density shows their ability in writing an academic text. The data were taken from the introduction section of thesis proposals written by English graduate students, with the readers of higher education level. By statistical and descriptive analysis, the study reveals that the lexical density of students’ writing is categorized as less dense (51.19%). Grammatical complexity became the major factor that contributed to lexical density. It was revealed that the complexities emerged since students still have limited knowledge about the language use in writing an academic text. The fact shows that students’ ability in writing  academic text is still in average level. This implies that the ones who write the text should consider the high density for the academic text. It is recommended to provide the topic of lexical density in the subject of academic writing subject in the syllabus of English study program of higher education.

Abstract

Linguistics as the scientific study of language has very crucial role in running language instruction. Changes in language teaching-learning method reflect the development of linguistic theories. This paper describes how the three broad views of linguistic theories, namely traditional grammar, generative grammar, and functional grammar work in relation to English language teaching and learning. Since both linguistics and language learning have the same subject to talk about, the knowledge of the language, then, is the core. Linguistic features analyzed are on the levels of Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics and Discourse as the basic components, supported by Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. In relation to language teaching and learning, especially English, such knowledge on the English language gives learners the chance to apply in social communication and in any occasion. The use depends on the viewing of linguistic theories (English) in certain era, which reflects the need of learners in using English. It is assumed that the more linguistic competence someone has, the easier he/she can run his/her instructional activities. As the consequence, in the English language learning, the syllabus designer should notify the mentioned levels of linguistic components while constructing English instructional materials, methods, and evaluation based on the stage of learners to avoid misunderstanding in use. In this case, English instructors/teachers should also update their linguistic competence, especially on Psycholinguistic and Sociolinguistic points of view. Key words/phrases: linguistics, English, language instruction, linguistic competence

Abstract

This article discusses and interpretes the findings of the study of the implementation of English instruction at Elementary Schools of Padang City. Through observation, questionnaire, informal interview, and documentation, the data were collected from the sample of state schools which offer English as the local subject. Using descriptive analysis technique, it was found that the implementation of the English instructional strategies did not truly follow the directions designed for the elementary school students for the teachers did not have definitive curriculum. Thus, the instruction was not much in a good track, that is (1) oral language skills tended to be ignored; (2) the instruction for three grades of the students (3, 4, and 5) was seen overlapped for they used the same book as the only source of the teaching materials; (3) the instructional assessment was conducted in all kinds, such as process evaluation, port-folio, formative and summative test. However, it was mostly on the written form, different from the objective of English learning at the elementary schools; and (4) there were problems faced in offering the subject, namely, the teachers were not fully given the opportunity to improve their English, and the status of English as local subject makes the subject ignored by the headmasters of schools.
